sorry...was away in a meeting...just back...
Here is additional information provided by a friend incognito...
"Here's some aditional info courtesy my dear mummy.
Khamaj is equivalent to the 28th Melakarata Ragam Harikamboji. The intriguing thing is, though Khamaj is a light raag in the prem ras - erotic ras, Harikamboji is mostly Bhakti ras. Thyagaraja composed some beautiful kirtis in Harikamboji.
Following is courtesy a friend and me
Rabindrageet is an amalgamation of different musical styles, predominantly Hindustani Classical with a folkish flavour. Yes, Tagore did use western nuances too. Usage of chromatic forms for example. And Piano chords. Chords is predominantly a western concept. we use pure swars, they use combos called chords. Rabindrageet is tripe P - Prem, Prakriti, Puja (courtesy soulsoup).
Salilda and Hemantda took Rabindra and Nazrul geet, gave it poetic form and more romanticism and invented 'Kavyageet'. It became a RAGE.
Piyu Bole has only a little jhalak of Khamaj. But it is there.
Osonaire gave a wonderful link.
If you check thru that site, there's a discourse on Raag Deepak.
Pt. Ram Ashreya Jha explains about the Aarohana and Avrohana of the Raag Deepak, but deters from singing the true one. I've seen fear in musicians when they're requested for Deepak. Ust. Vilayat Khan is the only one who knows the true Raag Deepak and he's flatly denied passing it on to his students.
Btw, the other day I heard his daughter Zila Khan, a sufi singer, give a classical baithak in Varanasi. She was and progressively went towards the end."
psst...pssst..soul...yes it is from............
