What I mean to say is there are only 12 notes on a chromatic scale and 2-3 scales available for singing.. so its veri likely all songs have "deja ecoutez" kinda thing or they resemble some raga here or there since those are the only harmonic notes on a scale...

ARR hardly looks a "raga" kinda guy!!

Ok, before you say that again - go torture yourself first😆

But on a slightly serious note- I don't know what you mean by "simple melodies retro-fit into a raaga" - What are raagaas? Some kind of holy sephulcre? The Shroud of Turin? Something sacred that can't be touched?? No, indeed not.. Swaras, raagaas, taalams...are the components of music. In other words, the raaga is the source of melody. How can you say a melody is retro-fit into a raaga? It is sort of like saying you made an omelette and you retro-fit it into an egg!!

qwertyasdf, basically you don't think classical music can make a comeback, right?

What about if they just did this as background music/song. Maybe subliminally, it could reach the audience? I think sadness, passion/ambition can all be conveyed this way.

One of the things about raag based music is that it need not have alaaps or "sa re ga ma" notes, like in "Laaga chunari mein daag" to become a raag based song. Even "Mera joota hai Japani" is raag-based. It is based on Bhairavi.

There are quite a few songs even today that are raag based, but the number of such songs is fairly less as compared to the Golden era. ARR and ID do a lot of raag based music. Eg - ARR's "Jiya Jale" is based on Bhairavi, "Ghanan ghanan" on Malhar, "Hai Rama" is based on Dhanashree. ID's "Dhai Shaam" is based on Basant, "Albela sajan" is based on Ahir Bhairav. Anu Malik's "Mere Humsafar" is based on Shuddha Kalyan.

Among the newer compositions again, Breathless, Bada Dukh Dina Tere Lakhan Ne, Piya Tora Kaisa Abhimaan, Dekha Hai Pehli Baar, Pyar Mein Hota Hai Kya Jaadu, Ghar Se Nikalte Hi etc are raag based.

The only movie that I can recall offhand as completely based on Classical music (and its remix) is Morning Raaga. Remix of classical, that too Carnatic, is not all that bad! It is pretty cool!

Just about anything is being passed off as classical-based nowadays! I didn't like either of the songs composed by HR or Ismail at the Finale of SRGMP and was surprised to find so many calling it "classical based" 😡

Agree with you on Dhai Shaam.. the songs from ARR and ID are usually multi-raag based. I just listed one of them to quote as an example.

Good observation on Bhairavi.. some other classics are "Tu ganga ki mauj", "phool gendava na maro", "bhor bhayi panghat par".

Do you know if there is something in western classical that resembles raag pilu closely to understand the other song? Who has composed it?

It's funny but many Japanese songs are actually a rehash of Raag Bhupali. That's why Shankar Jaikishan made "Sayonara Sayonara" in Bhupali. I've recently heard a Vietnamese song resembling Bhupali too!

Thanks for your thoughts ummm, punjini, Sangeeta, Abhi, and ofcourse qwertyasdf.

Intersting to learn about raag-based songs. I agree that some of the songs mentioned have a obviously have a classical feel to them, but I wouldn't count those that do not (even if they are loosely based on some raaga.

I wish I could hear a well-made classical composition on the lines of "manamohana badey jhootey" from Seema in a contemporary film. It's very important for the entire composition to sound good and I also don't like too many instruments drowning the singer's voice as in AR Rahman songs (my opinion only..sorry if I offend ARR fans).

In some of the golden era films like Mughal-e-Azam, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Baiju Bawra, classical music maestros like Badey Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan and DV Paluskar were roped in to sing a song. In Naushad's words he begged and badgered Bade Ghulam Ali Khan to sing for Mughal-e-Azam.

Wish something like that could be done again for a movie. Once such a classical song becomes popular, the public might start getting attracted towards classical music.
