Its fast food generation now . pizza and burger are preferred now than home cooked food.Same way funcky music and fast numbers are in now.I hope the trend changes. When i was young i used to watch classical concerts on tv and even in our town where i used to live ,we used to have concerts every month .Now everything is changed .Now whatever channel i change i see half naked people singing some pop numbers or dance to remixes.I do enjoy fast number once in a while in movies but i hope we do get to hear more classical tunes in the future. But then how many movies are we able to watch with kids and family .?Most of the producers and directors are opting for movies that make money fast. can we expect good classical tunes from such movies?

A limited audience will always enjoy classical based tunes. remeber Umrao Jaan? or the latest Devdas? Many people enjoy that type of music. Along with the OTHER music. If ALL MD's decide to give at least 2 songs per film, based on Semi classical themes I am sure it can be revived. Unfortunately the current lot of MD's are either not capable or not willing to do that. Believe me the majority of Indians will enjoy that. Even in the 60's we digested westen based tunes OF SJ/LP/RD/KA as well as Naushad/Madan type of Music.

But in the 70s, ABBA and BoneyM and the BeeGees were big. But there were still classical songs in movies (and some songs with a Disco feel to it)

In the 80s, there was a lot of Punk-Rock, but there were quite a number of movies that still had classical music.

In the 90s, Rap and hip-hop was big. Here is where I started to see less and less of quality music. More of imitating from the west.

These days?

Can some1 explain to me exactly what is meant by classical music? in fact, we talk about classical singing, classical dancing, classical paintings, classical physics, classical literature, and so on...

the dictionary meaing of the word "classical" doesn't appear to cover the real connotation of this word.

ok, let's just take music for instance and forget about classical ____________ (fill in this blank with all other fields that I mentioned).

Why r people with a strong classical background held in high esteem? Often it comes out that classical singing and dancing is an art that's extremely difficult to perfect. but exactly what is this "difficulty" that's brought up? My knowledge on music is pretty limited so please treat me as a beginner. 😳

the word "classical" baffled me before as well and I am unable to crack the mystery even now. but needless to say, I am growing very fond of it.

😊

I am not an expert in anything but this is what i know.

classical music is nothing but music which has been passed on through generations and generations.Either through a guru to his shishya or through institutions. They are learned traditions.

people with Classical back ground are held high because they master the forms through vigourous training for years and years. There are so many rules to follow and one can only master it through training.

sounds and thats all about good about him.. I think he can ever give
anything close to "Pucho na kaise maine raine bitayi"

Honey, those songs are in 'ragamalika' 😆

And I won't put ARR against anyone else. ARR has had his good days and
his bad days. And like any MD, he draws from folk music/street music
(what in TAmil we call 'dabbankuuthu') as well as from classical sources.
Honestly, I'm not too fond of his latest productions. Wasn't
impressed with Mangal Pandey or Rang de Basanti (A friend of mine
actually gave me her CD when I mentioned I wanted to go buy it - coz she
didn't like listening to it)... I think he's gone away from his Carnatic roots.

But - just go listen to the songs of Roja or Saathiyaa or Kandukkondein
Kandukkondein --(you'll have to suffer what must be to you the torture of
listening to people singing in Tamil, but do it for me? 😃 [bats eyelids])
-- and you'll see what I mean...

The question is can classical music make a comeback? To begin with that is a rhetorical question. With music directors like HR, Anu Malik, and what have you, dominating the scene and corrupting the young listeners how can classical or for that matter even semi classical music have a fighting chance?

If responsible composers like ARR, ID or Shantanu M, to name a few make a decided effort not to yield to the present trend of composing "here today gone tomorrow tunes" then maybe classical and semi classical music might get a reprieve and survive the current fads. It is sad since no compositions today match or even come anywhere close to the tunes of Anilda or Madan Mohan or Roshan or Naushad or Sachinda or Shankar Jaikishan or any of the old time composers. Having said that, and going back to the basic question can classical music make a comeback? The answer, cynical as it maybe is, I hold very little hope of that happening. 😭
