National spirit eludes Mr India event
Bano Haralu
Friday, February 3, 2006 (Guwahati):
Bijit Gogoi from Assam was in for a rude shock after he won the National Body Building Championship Mr India title in Mumbai on Sunday.
As soon as the results were declared, Shiv Sena members who were supporting the competition runner-up Sham Rahate started vandalising the venue.
They protested the results, saying Gogoi should not be declared the winner as he was an "outsider".
"The supporters began vandalising the green room, saying I was from the north east and hence not an Indian. I ran into the audience and sought protection," Gogoi said.
Rahate has now said he will not lay claim to the title, but angry officials of the Indian Body Building Federation say this is not enough.
The Federation has demanded an apology to Gogoi and may even recommend a ban on Rahate.
Meanwhile, Gogoi is back in his home state, and in the true spirit of a national champion, says he has put the experience behind him.
