O babua Ye mahua :totally abstract composition, using rhythm never heard before going in 1 & half cycle, complete delight for instrumentalists, intelligent choice of ID exploiting Twinkle's ability to express very well, she sang it brilliantly indeed.
Some great song selections IMHO:
Twinkle:
Daiiya re :masterpiece by Pancham, the scale keeps going up, Pancham has produced dramatic effect in song by moving chords in free style, no wonder people call him magician of chords, this was best performance of Twinkle, she hit each note perfectly.
Nihira: Actually this girl is gifted with a very good musical sense, so far I've not come across any of her selection which is not a classical no./unique in other way. She is MOST consistent in wonderful song selection. Some of her great selections: I love you:HRHK( by RD Burman), Rangeela re (ARR), Chalka Chalka re (ARR), Kehna hi kya( ARR), Hawa Hawai (LP), pyar hua chupke se (RD Burman).
Rangeela re: Ashaiji was requested by ARR to do some practice before recording which started around 11.00am, there was no music no orchestra, ARR kept asking Ashaji to repeat at places he was not happy, practice session went on, finally it was lunch time & Ashaji asked, can we start recording now...? ARR said: RECORDING IS OVER....!
He actually had done the musical part before Ashaji arrived, used multitracks, this song is another instrumentalist's delight. ARR happens to be a musician who has used technology to improve music. Ofcourse our wonder girl Nihira did full justice to it.
Hema: Saathiya (ARR), E ajnabi (ARR: actually based on a raag)
Aane wala pal (Golmaal): based on raag Kirwani, extnsion of few notes which Amitabhji used to play on mouthorgan when he looked at Jaya Bhaduri in Sholay, simple & beautiful song, perfect rendition by Hyderabadi Biryani.
Ujjainai: Black: another abstract composition, very unusual notes & chords structure, has intense melanchoic effect, hits soul where it hurts, a great performance by Ujjaini.
Ye dil sun raha hai ,a tough composition by Jatinj, known to be a tough task master, Kavitaji did many retakes actually, still Jatinjii was unhappy with final recording, neverthless she won national award for this song: I wont say Ujjaini was very good at it, she lost sur at no. of places. but this song is one of the best composed in last 10 years.
Himani: Kache dhaage (I rate this as her best performance), Aaj ki raat (RD Burman), Rangeela re (SD Burman).
Swananda: Jane kya baat hai (Sunny, RD Burman): this song sounds similar to an older composition of Panchamda, Do naino me aansoo bhare hai .....fom Khushboo(1975), which is based on a night raag, perhaps this was the best song done by Swananda, If Im not wrong this was the point where Jatinji noted she has some similarity with Ashaji's voice. Though it is by Lataji originally.
Emraan: Rooth ke hamse kahi, sung by Jatinji himself, based on a Rabindra sangeet, leaves us wondering why Jatinji didn't sing more often...
Sharib: Yumma Yumma, lagi tumse man ki lagan
Vinit: Satrangi re
Debo: Ek ladki to dekha ( 1942 a love story), Rimjhim gire sawan (again on a raag), both by RD Burman.
It is getting very lengthy, so end of rant.
Please feel free to add threads of good selection which you think your favourite singer did justice with.
To be fair to all contestants.. can we please add more to Himani's.. I think that girl has been superb.. and she deserves credit for it.. Its a good musical post.. lets not be biased :)
