But look at RD Burman. He learnt the Sarod since he was 3 years old, and from a classical musician himself. I forget the name....hmmm.

Pancham used to assist his father, as Sinha rightly pointed out. There's an interesting snippet. Pancham composed his first tune at the age of 9 - Aye Apni Topi palat..for Kishoreda. Burman Da took that tune, put it into the movie Funtoosh, and didn't even credit his son.
Talk about, Main Tera Baap Hoon...hehe....

And as you k now many songs of Abhiman had their notes written by Pancham though they came in name of Sachinda.
GOD BLESS THEIR SOULS FOR GIVING IMMORTAL SONGS.

Damnit.

The two kinds are entirely different. Western music is written. Indian is oral. Western music is freestyle. Indian music isn't.

For example, if a Raag has its base note as the...say, komal nishdha, then it cannot...in any case, in any form, have the teevra nishadha. It jarrs. Any introduction of an out-of-scale microtone (shruti), or swar (note), jarrs the entire composition. This knowledge on improvisation and Raag development and how to develop a Raag without jarring it, is gotten ONLY and ONLY by formal training. Bloody, it took people like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Pt. Ravi Shankar 7 years to learn one Raag Bhairavi. SEVEN YEARS. Then they became the musicians they are. Yes, they compose too. And they compose in style.

There's only one case of an untrained musician who touched heights, that leaps to my mind. OP Nayyar. But then again, remember, he was in the Army Band in his Army Days (He served as a Major in the British-Indian Army during WWII). And, he still knew the rudiments of Taala, Laya and Raaga. I doubt if HR knows any of that stuff. HR to me is crap...maybe i am biased....i am totally in love with the Golden Era of Hindi music. Maybe I try to compare the quality of Music. Maybe I rever S-J and Naushad in a totally different dimension...but then again, HR is crap. Hehe, sorry for being brutal, all you HR fans. ROCK ON, you people are at no fault!!

Well said, adwarakanath!

Also when Shiv-Hari said you cannot become composer just by training, they didn't exclude training from what it takes to become a composer. in my opinion HR is nowhere near that. he is a crappy music director (if you call hime one) with crappier attitude.

But you dont need to be classically trained to catch people like HR from Shiv Hari etc.
All you need is to have a good musical ear. Thanks to internet, Now I listen to all sort of music from arabic, irish to european to indian classical, pakistani, spanish , american country music, all of it. and more often than not I stumble across pieces that I have heard before in bollywood songs.
More I listen more I dislike bollywood Music Dirs like HR, pritam, sanjeev darshan , JL, AM etc
Even if they make 5 original songs...and lift one without giving any credit to person who actually created it, they lose credibility. Its a crime to music.
To me now its like if I have not heard the original, it just means that I have to dig deeper. :(
