The hypothesis of this email is that votes play only a small part of the elimination process and not the only part.
Eliminations are determined by three factors. Public sentiment (note choice of words: not public votes but public sentiment), mentor pull and quality of performance. I think I ordered them correctly. To start with, public didn't feel too strongly about Raktima and Swananda. They were somehow the "meek" ones. Not exactly crowd favorites. So, they were eliminated. Sharib's was a unique case. He didn't have the kind of support he has now, while he was in the competition. Plus JL never had the kind of pull (strange as it seems, since they ARE the biggest with most hits) others have. So performance took a hit in favor of public support / mentor pull. That explains why Sharib's out. Put in other words, that explains why the organizers took Sharib out. Twinkle used to be a bigtime crowd favorite but bad performances caught up with her and her fan base dwindled. So we have two factors against her (dwindling public sentiment + bad performances), which is a strict no-no with the organizers. So, Twinkle saw the exit door.
Ujjaini and Paresh are special cases. Both are now with Himesh. If they are eliminated at this stage, HR will again be left with Vinit alone and we all know how that turned out. So Oraganizers are in a pickle. Going back to the drawing board they see that performance aside, Paresh has a bigger fan base. So logic dictates that Paresh be kept in the show. Ujjaini…sorry baby!
It gets tougher progressively after this point. Organizers now have a combination of things to base their eliminations. Public sentiment +/- Mentor pull +/- Performance.
If some of the mentors were promised that their feelings would be honored through out the competition, the organizers have to keep their promise. However, they can't satisfy all of them in the end. Someone has to take a hit. Who is that going to be? HR says that he is not going to sacrifice Vinit till the end. He is OK with disposing off Paresh and Ujjaini. AS shoud give up either Hema or Himani. AS hasn't made up his mind yet. He would most probably stick with public sentiment himself and give up Hema at one point. ID would be willing to give up Debo but not Nihira. ID is from Mumbai and so is Nihira. Plus he has to work in Mumbai after all.
Order of elimination assumes importance now. Organizers go like this. If Vinit has to be kept till the end, Paresh has to go now. Sorry, Himesh. After paresh, based on another fresh round of performances, Organizers reevaluate public sentiment. Numbers will be crunched. Phones ring constantly. Tensions mount. Between ID and AS, organizers have to pick one. At this point, HR is sitting pretty. Why not, he just sacrificed one. He has nothing to lose till the end. AS goes first. He however puts in a condition. He will say that he is willing to give up one contestant in exchange for one final slot. At this point we will keep the guesswork going and come back to this a little later. Hema or Himani. Hmm.
After that episode (where AS sacrifices, smartly, you would see), ID is next. His choice is as easy as chewing ghutka. Unless things turn 180, it is going to be Debo. Otherwise there would be riots in Mumbai.
Final three will see one from each Gharana. All the mentors are happy, relatively speaking at this point. Among the three who goes first? Simple. Who ever has sacrificed their contestant last, in the top six. ID grudgingly accepts the organizers verdict. Wishes he were smarter before. He goes to Nihira, offers apologies and to smooth it out, a couple of songs in the next year or two. AS feels happy that somehow it worked out for him and the sacrifice he made in the early rounds didn't go to waste after all. So AS and HR duke it out in the finals.
For organizers, it's back to the drawing board. Bring out the equation boys. Computer geeks in the back office start generating reports and numbers as pie Charts. Wait a god damn minute. Did somebody say Vinit and Himani like each other? Well, why not have them in the fnals then? OK, it gets clear now. The question I posed before found it's answer. It was Hema who got eliminated in the earlier rounds. Between Vinit and Himani, whoever loses, the fact that both of them like each other would assuage public sentiment anyways. Phew! So Vinit vs Himani it will be with AS and HR playing samdhis to perfection. ID will cheer on. For good measure and as added saccharine, JL will show up to "bless" the winner(s). After couple of Shaan-ish jokes and big toothy smiles, the show's over.
Get some rest guys before the emotional onslaught of SRGMP Challenge 2006 begins. The circus has to go on.
