Rahman
will go into voluntary exile in 2011

Nettled by all the flak for his disappointing work in 2010 (Robot, Raavan, Jhootha Hi Sahi, the Commonwealth theme-song), A R Rahman has decided to take a sabbatical from film scores in 2011.

This prolonged period of rejuvenation might do a wealth of good to Rahman's creativity. But it's causing a panic attack among Rahman loyalists in Bollywood like Ashutosh Gowarikar, Mani Ratnam and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who work with the Oscar winner.

After waiting for Rahman's nod for months Gowarikar finally gave up and found a new music composer, Sohail Sen, for his film. Mani Ratnam too is caught in a dilemma. And Rakeysh, who is working on Run Milkha Run, will shoot the film's sequences without songs for now.

He will only add songs and music once Rahman returns to recording. Says Rakeysh, "To me it is inconceivable to make films without songs and music. And to have music without Rahman is a bit of a contradiction for me. Unfortunately, Rahman is not doing any music scores this year."

But explains Rakeysh, "Anyway, I never shoot sync-songs. No one sings in my cinema. The songs are always in the background. So getting Rahman to do the songs later in Run Milkha Run is not an impossibility."

Let's hope this partnership creates its magic again.

I must say the songs from Raavan aren't bad at all! They are much better than Jhoota Hi Sahi and Robot.

People just have very high expectations fom Rahman.

The directors should accept his holiday and give more opportunities to other MD's like Amit Trivedi, Mitoon or Anu Malik. After all, Rakeysh Mehra's first film had great music by Anu Malik:

Rahman should continue making music, ups & downs would be there, there is no point of taking sabbatical...
'
One can't guarantee he would be making soulful music in 2013 just like that...just keep making music with passion and success will follow.

Rahman is like a golden goose for all M.D 's and they expect golden egg every day. No matter How creative you are, sooner or later you become predictable.Only MD like Pritam can fulfil the demands of these MD's with his infinite resources.

Well, I don't see the harm in taking a break like that. He probably felt upset because music is life, his passion! Maybe taking a year off will help him become even more fresh and bigger in 2012. I will miss his music in 2011, but I think sometimes everyone needs a break. It's good he's taking one before his music becomes predictable. He's a wonderful musician, and I think he just wants a break in general. Maybe he's not feeling the music he was writing this past year. Who knows.
