I think it's a perfectly fine compliment to give. The guy who sang the original is also a singer. And you can compare any two singers because singing has nothing to do with success and only to do with how well you have sung. By singing a particular song and getting it recorded, the original singer sets a standard for comparison. It's perfectly alright for someone then to say that it either is better than the original or not as good as the original.

Lata ji also said singing an original is very different from copying a song. That is why she wanted the contestants themselves singing original songs. That is the reason she do not like these Muscial competitions.
These MD's will do that act of "touching the ears" when they are remembering their ustaads or renowned musicians. They do not give a damn when it comes to not so popular singers and will make comments like the contestant sang better than the original singer(who is not that popular). These MD's who touch their ears are actually ego maniacs. They will make promises to singers on air to satisfy their egos and and generally won't keep that promise. Only cartoons and not real MD's can do such a thing😆

i think the same, original is original and should be respected. those who copy may add some beauty or put some polish to the songs they sang which may be pleasant to hear.

There are many other ways to compliment a contestant. You don't have to make comparisons to the original singer. Let the contestant shine off their OWN talent and not talent based comparisons to the originals.
That probably made no sense! 😆 But whatever you all know what I mean!

i also get real annoyed when i hear this comment! this is not fair to the original singers who worked hard to sing the song. the contestant probably did a fantastic job, but judges should refrain from comparing to original singers.

I agree that if anyone is doing something for the first time it has to be respected. But that doesn't mean someone cannot come after wards and better the work. And there is no harm in saying that the latter work is better. A MD cannot search through every possible singer before he identifies the one who sings his song. A different singer can give a different interpretation to that song which can have greater appeal. It is not a commentary on the original singer .The original singer did the best he could and it was his first time. But you cannot say because it is original, it is the best.

I am not saying if it is the original, it is the best. In our culture, there are certain traditions like ' don't talk bad about a person who is dead because he cannot come and defend himself. But there are no absolutes. People do whatever they feel like. Every body can have their own opinion. It is democracy. I have never heard a Judge/singer telling a contestant "you have sung better than me".

Saying someone sang better than the original is not an inherently bad comment at least as I view it. I agree that it shouldn't be used for every single ordinary performance but it can be used as a comment when a contestant really deserves it and no original singer need take offense at it. IMO music rendition varies with time, place and mood. The original singer is kind of unfortunate in the sense that a particular rendition of his is locked down for public hearing. Hence the comparisons are inevitable and part of the whole deal. The good thing being an original singer is that people will hear your version a lot more than any other version and that's the voice that sticks most of the time. So it has it's good and bad.

I have heard Shaan tell Mahir on Chote Ustad that he sang better than him (Don title song).

For instance, Suganddha was nothing close to Alisha ji's Kajra re 😕 So Vishal's comment was really unnecessary.

If i can think of any, or at least a performance where that comment would be appropriate .. it would be for Maiya Maiya (Mauli) Her performance preserves the memory of the orig AND gives the song something more with her rendition. 😃

Every part of your body, heart, mind, soul are burning with the happiness of sugandha and sugandha is really really best of best. I am happy that she is more than original. I am also happy that you are sad. You never said a single word when sajid said that he never listened such voice/song like sniti. Also it does not matter who wins, but ali sher is better than sniti and I never heard such voice before.
IMO sniti is a garbage.

And, Im not trying to offend Suganddha fans over here, I was only stating a brief example that's relative to the topic. Goodness 😆

Maiya Maiya song has been sung mind blowing by anwesha whereas I am not her fan. I am fan of mauli, she sang namak ishq ka brllliantly.

Suganddha on the other hand was no where close to the original. She did sing well but you can't match her up to Alisha ji's singing.
