Even in old era we hardly had versatile singers, they were very few like Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna da, Kishore da, Asha bhosle(later part). This era has Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal. Ab to Sonu ki bhi demand kam ho gayee, ek time Rafi saheb ki demand bhi khatam ho gayee thee, yeh to hota hi rahta hai. Pahle era slowly change hota thaa kyun ke sab manual thaa, ab zamana bahut fast change ho raah kyunke computer ka zamaan hai, Ghonghat se Saari se skirt ka zamana aa gaya. Biscope se cinema hall se multiplex ka zamana aa gaya. Even now, ARR grooms and metors the singers and give chance to new singer.

Lata ji in same book (by Raju Bhartan) says "The aim in music today is not to crate some thing original ; that will last. This is true of the whole country . Creative music is not happening any where-not in Mumbai, not the South or even in Bengal. How can you blame the singers alone for it?"

Yes Rahman gives beak to new talent but grooming a vocal by putting it through range of diverse & difficult compositions is different, that is what Lata ji probably means here.

Indraji, aajkal Aatif Aslam and Himesh jaise singers ka zamana hai, kaon itna mehnat kare. Aaj na hi mehnat karne wala koi hai to phir mehnat karaye koi kyun. Aajkal to janwar ki awaaz mein gao to uniqueness kahlati hai.

Vishal Bhardwaj praising all singers as Guests ko apne promotion se matlab hai. Guests speaks like aise singers aaj tak kabhi nahin dekhe and this is like parrot reading for all performers.

wah anamikaji, kya be-bak baat kahi. jiyo

In one of the books which described the evolution of music in Bollywood Lata said; it is not that we do not have talented singers today, we do have but there is no composer to test a singer's range & vocals.

If I became Lata , a lot of credit goes to C Ramachandran (who taught me how to breathe while singing), Anil Biswas, Naushad (taught me alaap singing), K Prakash & others were my true mentors. They explored my vocals and made me what I am today.

Unfortunately today there is no composer to mentor any singer, the emphasis today is on instant success not in creating some thing original which will last, no wonder we have 100s of sufiana singers but not a single NFAK.

The on going SRGM show is a living example of what Lata ji said, by keeping the singers protected in their cocoon (genre) we are creating a fragile , weak breed of singers who would be forgotten the moment the show is over.

@bold - 👏👏👏 well said!
