Is Indian TV too full of singing reality shows? Having so many reality shows, on different channels, in different languages, for different age groups cannot be a good thing, can it?

Sure, talent should be appreciated and given a platform. But does the platform always have to be in the form of a televised, prime-time competition decided by audience votes?
It seems as if the audience are getting bored of the repetition that inevitably seeps into a format that's been done dozens of times across Indian TV channels. And that can't be helpful to the singers...
I'd say that only two singers have made it big becaue they took part in TV competitions: Shreya Ghoshal and Raja Hasan.
There are a lot of ideas in this post, sorry for the incoherence. 😳

water water every where but not a drop to drink.

There are many reality singing shows but unique and solid talent are very few. Most of them are run of the mill types.

Well Xo Buddy. I agree in terms that they are over doing it now. Honestly, I am bored of these reality shows one after the other.

But then again, if in a Reality show we find singers like Sreeram Chandra then why not.

Also, don't forget those same reality shows gave us Sunidhi Chauhan too. 👏

Yes, I am also sick of the sheer number of reality shows. However, besides boring the heck out of people, I cannot think how this can be bad. Like you said, talent should be appreciated and given a platform and these reality shows do just that. Although most of the shows are more interested in making money off of these shows, kahin na kahin, they also help unrecognized singers to get recognized. I don't think anything is wrong with that.

You asked if the platform HAD to be in the form of a televised competition. Well, how else can a platform be? What good is having a platform which is not famous or not accessible for people to watch? What good is it gonna do to take part in a staged competition in your local community center or whatever, where the only people watching you are the people from your neighborhood? It won't get you recognized nationally. And the only way to do it is by being on TV because sooo many people watch TV. So yes, it has to be in a form of televised competition or else there is no meaning for the platform which can't get you recognized.

And perhaps the audience is getting bored of these singing shows (not all) and I agree it isn't good for the singers. However, it is at least better than not having a show at all and not being in the show. I think it is better for their careers to be less popular than be unknown.

And I think you left out so many singers in your list of who made it big. Check again.😊

Yes, there is a over kill, at present😊

It helps budding singers be recognised by the public.

the shows can be on a rotation basis .

If zee has one, next will star, then sony.every one makes their money.

Three shows per year won't kill us😃Instead of 5-6

Agree with you 100% O wiseone ! 😊
Not only that, it is important for these contestants to make the most of the few minutes they get every week on national TV. They sing, talk, buffoon around, make a fool of themselves, bring personal stories, whatever they can do to grab the public's attention. They have to make an impression one way or the other... negative publicity is better than no publicity 😆

On a serious note, these folks are very talented, and many do get local recognition if not become popular bollywood singers.
Karunya has a name in the south industry. Aneek Dhar is doing ok in Bengali music scene.

Although I am sick of reality music shows its not the channel or the format or the drama that I am finding boring, but the same set of songs that's repeated in every show 😡
Is there a dearth of songs in our desi music scene 😕?

SRGM did produce Shreya & Kunal but in the era when it was judged by stalwarts like Kalyan Ji Anand ji, it used to be Vidya-Mandir (school of learning), since then quality has come down and the shown has got converted to a money minting vote abiding machine.

To the other point of some one being successful in regional film industry as pointed by amukta, that shouldn't be aim, if one is aspiring to be topper in national singing show, I know of singers who have been recording in Bangla music industry (from Bangla SRGM) that shouldn't be yardstick of being immensely successful
