What to write and from where to start ?

He was a thunderstruck soul. An embittered man , to many an alcoholic but a legendary poet. His life was full of struggle and sorrow. His father went for a second marriage and he decided to stay with his mother who took the bold step of walking our of his father's wife) and therefore witnessed day to day hard struggle. He saw and experienced poverty first hand. This is the reason his poetry was full of fire.

He never described husn, jism or ishq like other poet but his poetry was about suffering, an unemployed youth or even disease.

It is said the role of Gurudutt in Pyasa was actually of Sahir .

It was on insistence of Sahir All India radio started taking name of lyricists along with composer in a song.

He also made sure writers are paid royalty b y the musicians.

His first love remained Amrita Pritam. Amrita was known to smoke cigarette butts left by Sahir and writing Sahir's name many times on paper.

Sahir's best pair was with S D burman followed by Khayyam.

His famous songs include

Mai pal do pal ka shayar hu

Allah tero naam Ishwar tero naam

Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai

While others celebrate love in front of Tajmahal; he described it as luxurious monarchy

Sahir; the sensitive & fearless as S D burman described him

About Sahir many have said (including Gulzar) that his lyrics & poetry were disturbing.

I have also felt the same way many at times.
