The thing to be realized with debates is that, everyone has an opinion and they will defend it with all their might. If it's a debate competition and if it's being judged, someone will walk away the winner. It doesn't mean that the winner is a true winner; it just means that the winner convinced a couple of people supervising the debate. It just means that the winner found a few more supporters for his subjectivity. If it's an open forum like this one, it's much harder to declare a winner. Each one is entitled to think that they are the winners.
If it's less about winning the debate and more about convincing the others, that too is a futile exercise. In my experience, I have found people to be extremely stubborn and extremely rigid in their belief systems. They don't sway easily.
So, before I express any opinion, now-a-days I ask myself one simple question ' what do I realistically expect to get out of this? 99.99% of the time, the answer comes back as "nothing".
Mister. K. You sound like such a nihilist at times. Reducing everything to nothing. Although, I do somewhat agree with most of what you say. I would have to agree with OBJ there, I prefer discussions to debates. The problem with debates is as you point out, people either want to win or change someone's opinion. They are both futile. Especially online, no one is gaining anything by winning or thinking they won a debate online, other than some pretentious self gratification. This is how some of the more immature folk get all heated up, aggressive and offensive because they have to either win at all cost, or they feel that having their view questioned means some sort of epic catastrophe.
Similar to what you say, I tend to ask myself the question Mr. Sweeney asks Derek in American History X 'Has anything you've done made your life any better'. I like to ask myself, how will my life be any better with what I choose to do. Is this an exercise in futility or is there something to gain.
For me I enjoy discussions because I find it fascinating to see all the different perspectives that are there on the subject. There seems to always be something new to learn, a new point of view or just some interesting tidbit. (Of course I am not thoughtful all the time and sometimes will post the most stupidest things and get caught up in the most ridiculous arguments ever). It is not just IF or DM. My real life is also all discussion. I just can't watch TV, movies or read a book or do anything without discussion. That's why Law & Order is my favorite series, it gives so many aspects to discuss.
With discussions online, you get to meet people with similar views and chit-chat/socialize. But when you are really lucky opposites attract and then there is chemistry; like me and Ajnu. 😉
