I must admit that I don't keep up with the actual political battles and what-not that are surround the entire Challenge. However, I have been watching this show for quite some time. In all honesty, while Debojit did not deserve the poor votes he received on the mento-meter, I did not think his performance topped the other 3 contestants. For one thing, as my brother pointed out, he was READING the lyrics. Granted the song was difficult but so were many others that other contestants had to sing. He hasn't been necessarily my favorite contestant but he has been on my "good list" above Hema. Still I didn't feel that Himani should have been the one to be voted out. Her and Vinit have consistently been the best thus far. I had imagined it to be the two of them in the finals.

TV these days is so full of low-quality drama that I've given up watching it. A saas or a bahu occasionally registers fleetingly on my TV screen and my consciousness.

Apart from that there are those equally interminable 'talent hunts'. These compete with WWE in their style of building up rivalries and contests. Singers deliver dialogues in the manner of Batista meeting John Cena.

It's all too melodramatic to bear, but apparently it works with most of my country cousins. Now one of these shows, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, has finally neared its finale. The mode of selection of these contestants was mainly by viewers poll on phone and SMS.

The first contestant who made it to the round of three is Debojit from Assam. He suddenly found himself facing a rebellion from his fellow-contestants, who threatened to walk out of the event without explicitly stating why. I would have changed the channel at all this natak but a statement by one of the 'mentors' in the show stopped me.

Debojit got 80 percent of his votes from Assam, Adesh Shrivastava said. "We want a voice of India, not a voice of Assam", someone in the studio shouted. Fair enough. Except that, firstly, the fellow had polled more votes than other prospective 'voices of India', and secondly, Assam is still despite its several insurgencies a part of India.

A voice from Assam can be the voice of India as much as a voice from Delhi or Mumbai or Chennai. For the past few centuries, the West has dominated the world. So their perceptions of what is 'mainstream' have come to dominate globally.

Today we all speak English, listen to pop and rock, pride ourselves on our knowledge of Hollywood and European soccer, and of course dress in jeans and skirts and such likes. However, the point to note is that the average college or school student in America doesn't know Hindi, or listen to Indian music, or follow cricket, or know who Amitabh Bachchan is.

When Big B was voted the greatest star of stage or screen in a BBC online poll in 1999, there was considerable consternation in the West. The thing that went around then was that India, with its huge population, had voted for Big B and so he won there was no way he could be better than the best of the West.

Which may be true. If the world accepts the definition of what is 'good' cinema. Unfortunately, for me, a song from Chhote Miyan Bade Miyan is better cinema than an hour of Gone With the Wind simply because I enjoy it more. So there are these disparities in the world.

The artists will treat non-artists as charlatans if we try their game. The West will be miffed if our man wins a global award over their icons. Their sense of domination will get jolted. Now think of how the 'centre' treats the periphery in India. If you don't speak Hindi, don't listen to Bollywood music, don't care about cricket, you're an outsider already.

If on top of that you look different say, Mongoloid your status as second-class citizen is almost confirmed. That's the way life is for many people from the Northeast who come to 'mainland India'.

They can either become duplicates of the 'mainstream' people or stay in their ghettoes. And even if they do adopt 'mainstream' ways, the story doesn't always end happily.

Like Debojit, for example, who sings in Hindi, but must now contend with the fact that his support base is from the Northeast and not the cow belt, which is the 'mainstream' merely because it sends more crooks to Parliament.

Music to my ears! I simply cannot TOLERATE HR for the hard-selling that he is doing. Fact is and remains that Vinit, though tremendously talented, has a somewhat immature voice that requires quite a bit of training. Anyone who listens carefully enough with their ears and not with their overly-exaggerated sentiments would notice that he quite often slips from the right note. This is not the case of many other contestants like Hem, Himani, Nihira or even the one who was Jatin-Lalit's last entry and whose name I fail tor recall.
Also, Vinit is clearly not able to enunciate too well, which stands out in his performances, in a negative way, i must say.

Nonetheless, his "Tera Jaadu" performance was mind blowing (though not without a fault or two) and had he stuck to such songs afterwards, it would have been far better.

As far as Debojit is concerned, his vocal range is nowhere as good as Hem and Himani's. Agreed that it is fair, whatever his source of votes may be. But it may be noted that the people of Assam should not be mindlessly voting for him and also give some attention to others who perform better. This is not an Assam vs. South vs. Centre vc. North contest.
It is a contest between singers and the best should win.

Himani was no doubt most deserving of winning the crown, it's a pity she was ousted. Her level of perfection and her talent was unmatched. The show has no meaning left now, atleast for me.

DebuFan:

I agree with you. Those who are voting for Debu really love him and want see him a winner, and ther are doing this with in the frame work of the system. I really appreciate their persistence/determination.

You are right in saying the fans of any other contestant could have supported their candidate the same way those of Debu's. No one has the right to complain about the votes coming from certain region of India. Good luck to Debu.

First of all, this show is the best Z has to offer. It is the forum where the young talented boys and girls have had an opportunity to show what they can do. When we grew up in India, we did not have the luxury to show our talent.

Personally I have been singing both Indian popular music/gazals and Western music (love songs of Nat King Cole) for the past 30 years with a few popular demos. I know what music is.

This idea of leaving to public to decide who is the best possible playback singer is totally wrong. This should have been done by music masters and not the public.

Regarding the three young singers, Himani, Hemchandra and Vineet walking off the stage is totally unacceptable. If they belived in the public opinion, then they should face the 'music' as they say it in here in the US.

In any case, in my opinion, all three girls Nihira, Hemani and Ujjaini are excellent singer. If one has to decide between these three, my vote goes to Nihira as number 1, folowed by Hemani, and then Ujjaini.

Among the boys, the best singer is Debojit, followed by Hemachandra and then Vinit.

Among the mentors, the real great person is Ismail Darbar. Others are neither fair most of the time and nor are they great in terms of their accomplishments.

I believe that their walk-out decision was backed by theur mentors Adhesh and Himesh. Both of them were thinking about personal gains only, and they are making the 3 contestants to take wrong decisions. The only true mentor is Ismail Darbar. THe 3 contestants should abandon their mentors. Debojit is lucky to have a mentor like him. In this age of kali its is very difficult to get an guru like Ismail Darbar. If the 3 contestants change their guru then there is no harm in that. Because it is said in Bhagavata-Gita that if the guru is not good then you should change him.
The walk-out decision was a huge step. Because they insulted Debojit, then Ismail Darbar, then Saregamapa, then all the voters of the world.
Now we should stop voting for 3 walkouters until they ask pardon to everyone for the mistake they made.

Hi,

Here in bay area, CA, USA, I am one of the regular viewers of the Saregama shows. I think Shan is doing the job very well, he is the best in the show. HR is sick, how could a musical person like him behave such cheap. Now, I doubt his music too.

In my view, here the judges are lacking professionalism except ID. However, it was funny to look at him (ID) walking out while Debojit was low-scored by the other two. Instead, the low scores should been to asked to be explained.

The three participant who opted out of the show insulted the whole motive of the show and the viewers/voters; they should not be allowed to join back in, instead the last three who were voted out of the show should be brought back in. I would prefer to listen to music only from cultured singers not from stupid assholes.

I have read most of the comments posted on this site about the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and the drama on 19th January episode, all I would like to say is that lets not waste time on discussing about regional votes, coz to reach the top 10 mentors had a great hand and from the 10 the actually challenge started. And not to forget to reach to the top all the participants have pleaded to get votes and I see no harm if anyone has got maximum votes from their home grounds.

Its a SHAME to Himesh and Adesh that they could say thngs that they need VOICE OF INDIA and not VOICE OF ASSAM. These two mentors are total loosers and I pity them that don't even know Assam is a part of India. And also not to forget the maximum votes from Assam means the votes are all from the seven sisters of North East and not Just Assam.

Come on all – do you guys really believe – AS and HR knows North East is consist of seven states? There India stops at Bengal (OOH I am sooo obliged you at least included Bengal!! ). All states below MP belong to "South India" – all are Madrasi!! India for them is the "Hindi Belt" – MP, UP, Hariyana, Bihar, Delhi…

First BIG Mistake of Zee – making this show 'democratic'. I am not against democracy, but unfortunately it comes with own demerits – if the singing talent need to be judged by public – put their voice on radio (without any stories like "Devotion to Mother", "Secret Love Story" or "Sacrificing Wife"). Nihira didn't have a story – so she lost. BTW by public meter – "No Entry' is better movie than "Black" and Britney Spears is better Singer than Elton John. On that same tone the best song in Bollywood last year was "Dhoom"!!!??

Why Zee did it? Rs 6 per SMS – Rs 3 to the operator – Rs 3 to Zee, 60+ lakh vote per episode – you do the math. They killed the show.

Second they started displaying regional voting pattern – why??? I don't have any clue.

Now the whole thing is a well… a show only. 😭
