A composer (literally meaning 'one who puts together') is a person who creates music, usually in the medium of notation, for interpretation and performance (which may be repeated an unlimited number of times) by other musicians. The composer is the author of the music.

The level of distinction between composers and other musicians varies, which affects issues such as copyright and the deference given to individual interpretations of a particular piece of music. For example, in the development of European music, the function of composing music initially had no greater importance than the function of performing music. The preservation of individual compositions received little attention, and musicians generally had no qualms about modifying compositions for performance. Over time, however, the written notation of the composer has come to be treated as strict instructions, from which performers should not deviate without good reason. Performers do, however, play the music and interpret it in a way that is all their own. In fact, in the concerto form, the soloist would often compose and perform a cadenza as a way to express their individual interpretation of the piece.

More recently, scorewriter programs have become available, allowing composers to typeset music without the need of an engraver.

The term 'composer' is often used specifically to mean a composer in the mainstream Western tradition of 'classical' music. In popular and folk music, the composer is typically called a songwriter (since the music generally takes the form of a song).

only REALLY great singers can make lame compositions a hit.

though I think both are very very very very important. I think composers are more important. Sonu Nigam is a great singer in my opinion but he would never get an award for horrible songs he sang for useless movies no one watched. On the other hands songs like kal ho na ho and main agar kahoon take him to the top.

When a composition is good, it still sounds good with a decent singer's voice. (sure probably not the best but good enough where general public will enjoy it.) But so far I haven't encountered any GREAT singers making a horrible composition shine! We still have great singers in the industry who are quite underrated. It's because they haven't had nice composers.

Good point. Great compositions sounds good no matter who sings it, unless the song is very demanding. But certain songs seem to fit only certain singers.

But today the answer is simple - its the COMPOSER who is more important and has to be bang on with his tunes.

As you know, that now adays, the director hires the MD as per his budget and then natrates the script to him and tells him where he wants the song. The MD has to be good enough to understand the situation and then make the tune which is appropriate. Then comes in the lyrics which again have to be written on the tune and with the mood of the song in mind.

As far as singing goes, today's MDs have many choices but more than choices they have the machines ! which can correct everything, they can make a singer sound so different.

If the singer is good, it surely helps the song and lifts it further. But I have seen many besura singers (in live) and they have recorded songs which make them sound great.

Even some of the great singers of todays time are technically not so good but are doing a decent job. It is very easy these days to record songs, I have been at several recordings - they sing the mukhda once, then the antra and its then patched up. The songs are sung in multiple parts, sometimes an MD even records single lines !

Gone are the days when singers would prepare for the songs in advance, come and sing with feel the whole song in one take and if it was a duet, then sing the song together.

Best example I can give is Farhan Akhtar in Rock-on, he was roped in by Shankar (on request of Gattu - the director) to sing the songs so that they can maintain that Rock feel and raw voice texture. The reality is that Farhan cant sing ! I heard him at a Malad Mall during the promotion and man was he croaking or what !!! He is barely passable but when he records 1 line or 2 lines at a time with all the machines at work, it looks like the songs were his and only his !
