Part 3
Kabir had never experienced bliss in his life. But the months that followed were almost blissful for him. He was completely devoted to Ananya and even after a year of living together he was surpised by the joy he felt in coming home together, in waking up next to her. Professionally, along with his duties as Editor-in-Chief he was able to do a few heavy-duty reporting assignments. He spent 2 months covering the resurgence of insurgency in Assam and that was a powerful experience of him
That assignment was also a life-changing one for Ananya. She got exposed to to a very different world and evolved as a journalist learning how to develop a certain detachment from her subject while still telling the story in an empathetc way. The assignment was also a reminder to her about how kabir would always remain a mentor in her professional life. Ananya was very happy with Kabir. But there was something marring her happiness. Kabir's attitude towards marriage hadn't changed at all. If anything their domestic bliss had reaffirmed his belief that marriage was an unnecessary institution.
Arman had gone off to college and ananya's mother often came to their home. Today Kabir was cooking for both mother and daughter.
AM: Ananya, Kabir the two of you are so happy together. It's obvious that living together suits you. Why don't the two of you get married?
Kabir: Ma. What difference will marriage make? Why is it necessary? We are more committed to each other than most married couples I know.
AM: If that's the case, why don't you get married
Kabir: Ma marriage changes people. It complicates the issue and destroys relationships. Ananya and I are very happy together. We don;t need a societal stamp.
Later that night.
Kabir came and hugged Ananya from the back and kissed her neck.
Kabir: Saris really suit you. You should wear them more often instead of prancing around like a college girl.
Ananya: Hmm.
Kabir: Ma really seems hung up on the marriage issue.
Ananya (stiffly): Can you blame her? Our relationship is one of the most juicy gossip items of the city.
Kabir: What do you mean>
Ananya: Nothing. She is just concerned about my future, our future.
Kabir: Future? She knows how much we love...
Ananya: Love isn't everything. She just wants her daughter to have a safe and secure future?
Kabir: Do you have simiar concerns?
Ananya: To na extent. I am very tired. Let's talk tomorrow.
Kabir was concerned about Ananya and her mothers fears. He thought all night and finally fell asleep towards the morning, happy with the solutin he had found.
A few days later Kabir came bearing a gift for Ananya.
Ananya: Neither is it my birthday nor any anniversary.
Kabir: Open it!
As Ananya opened the gift Kabir said.
Kabir: These are all my asets - my properties, investments etc. Going forward everything will be owned jointly by us.
Kabir was shocked to see Ananya's eyes flash with anger.
Ananya: You think I am after your propetly. How dare you?
Kabir: Enough Ananya! All i am trying to do is assuage your fears. To make you more secure about our relationship. What else can I do?
Ananya: For starters, can you change the way the world looks at our relationship. Half the world calls me your fling, the other half calls me your mistress.
When I had moved in you I was confident that I'd be able to pull you out of the shadows of your past, re-instil your faith in the institution of marriage. But one year later and nothing's changed.
Kabir: Wait. In all this time that we have been together you haven't mentioned wanting to get married once.
Ananya: How could i? Your aversion to the institution is so severe. Your past is stronger than my love.
Over the next few weeks Ananya shuut him out completely. kabir could now understand how Ananya must have felt in the early stages of their relationship.
A few weeks later Kabir woke up to the sound of Ananya humming. It was music to his ears. He went outside to see Ananya cheerfully making breakfast. Towards the end of breakfast, Ananya spoke.
Ananya: Kabir neither of us is wrong. We just want very different things in life. Kabir don't take this the wrong way. I have decided to move out for some time. We both need space and time to figure out our priorities.
You may realize that youa re ready to ambrace the institution of marriage,
I may stop seeking societal acceptance.
She hesitated before continuing.
Or we may realize that we aren't meant to be togethr.
