Part 13:
Doctor: Ananya and Kabir I have done all tests and we should be able to discuss the results on Friday. The tests only cover the physical aspect of trying to conceive again. But are you two ready emotionally and psychologically? A stillbirth is an extremely scarring experience and the last thing you want to do is jump into another pregnancy.
Ananya: Of course we are! Don't worry. We are very excited.
Doctor: Ok then I'll see you day after tomorrow then.
Next morning Kabir got up to find Ananya missing from the bedroom. He was worried. But thankfully he found her in the guest bedroom. WHat he saw made him very anxious. Ananya was sitting teary-eyed holding the toys and clothes they had bought during her pregnancy.
Kabir: Ananya are you OK?
Ananya: Of course I am. We'll soon have a baby to wear these clothes to play with these toys.
Kabir: Ananya, we still have to meet the doctor and...
Ananya: I know. But I am confident that we'll have a baby very soon. I need a baby in my life.
Next day Ananya was excited and nervous. Kabir couldn't focus on anything but Ananya. He was getting worried for her.
At the clinic
Doctor: i am afraid I have some bad news for the two of you. Based on the test results It's unlikely that Ananya will ever be able to conceive naturally again. I am really sorry for you. Why don't you two take a minute. I'll be right back
Kabir was devastated to hear the news. He immediately turned to Ananya and held her hand. A look of extreme pain passed over her face. but the next moment she was looking at the doctor with a detached expresson.
Ananya: We don't need a minute. What are our options? Dr I am perfectly fine. I just want to know the next steps?
Dr; We could try IVF but...
Ananya: We'll do it. How soon can the procedue start.
Kabir: Enough ANANYA. Doctor we'll discuss things at home and get back to you.
Dr: Sure I understand. Here's an information docket. Please call me if you need any other information.
Ananya: What's there to discuss? I want the treatment. Starting today if possible!
Kabir: Enough we are going home?
At home
Ananya: What is wrong with you?! Don't you want a baby? Don't you want our lives to be complete again?
Kabir: Our lives are complete!
Ananya: No they aren't. Mine isn't
Kabir: Jumping into an IVF cycle isnt the answer.
Ananya: Why are you being so difficult?
I want a baby
I need a baby in my life.
I have to make the emptienss go away.
Ananya was becoming hysterical and yelling. Kabir calmed her down and hugged her.
Ananya: You have to give me this. We have to do this treatment
Kabir (helplessly): We'll do whatever you want.
Kabir and Ananya decided to undertake the treatment. Ananya was very happy and excited - a bit too much in Kabir's opinion.
The doctor had infoemd them that the chances of the procedure working weren't very high. But Ananya was confident to the point of being delusional. She had already started discussing the color palette for the baby's room, insiting that it should be a gender neutral color.
Kabir realized that he had made a blunder by given in to her demands. She wasn't ready for the treatment. He shuddered to think about what would happen to ananya if the treatment failed
Towards the end of the cycle after doing her first pregnancy test.
Ananya: It's negative. but they say the pregnancy may not show for at least a week.
Kabir: ANanya please face the facts. The odds...
Ananya: Don't talk to me about the odds. I am sure I'll become pregnant.
As the week passed and the negative tests kept piling up Ananya started wilting away like a flower. She was becoming desperate and manic.
They went to the doctor's clinic.
Dr: I am sorry. This cycle seems to have failed.
Ananya finally broke down. Kabir was unhappy to se ANnaya like that but he was relieved to see her expressing her emotions. The doctor went out to give them some privacy. When she came back, ANANYA looked up and said.
Ananya: When can we start the next cycle?
Dr: Ananya, I don't think that it's a good idea.. IVF doesn't seem to be working for you.
ANANYA: Why not? You aren't understanding.
Kabir had had enough.
Kabir: Stop it ANANYA. Dr thank you for everything.
Kabir held Ananya by the hand and took her home.
ANANYA: Why did you do that? We just wasted a day! We need to start the second cycle.
Kabir: We won't.
ANANYA: But you promised!
Kabir: That was my biggest mistake. You weren't ready for fertility treatment. What you need is counseling for the tragedy you experienced. But I gave in to your whims and have ended up making things worse.
Ananya: You think I am mad?! Is that why you don't want a child with me?
Kabir: STOP.
He held her by the shoulder and looked squarely in her eyes.
Kabir: Listen to me. I have spoken to the doctor at length. I coulld see that this cycle was failing. We discussed other options. But she says that we aren't suitable for other treatments either.
We won't be able to have a baby. That's the bottom line.
ANANYA: No!!!!!!
No. Stop it.
Kabir: You have to face the truth.
ANANYA: I can't take this.. I can't...
She began pushing Kabir away...
aNANYA: I am incomplete. I am empty!
Kabir held on to her just like he had on the day they had lost the baby. ANANYA finally gave up and broke down crying.
He supported her and made her sit down and she kept crying. After Ananya had calmed down he also broke down and put his face in hands.
After 10 minutes he suddenly heard an eery voice
I can't live with this emptiness. And I am keeping you away from happiness too. I have no reason to live.
When he looked up he found that ANANYA had already run inside the kitchen, He was horrified and ran after her. He entered the kitchen to find ANANYA with a knife in her hands, a determined look on her face.
