I don't know, ladies. While I totally understand loveanime, zeelicious and ritureuben's points on the uncharacteristic nature of a secret fast for Rudra, I am not convinced he is not inherently religious.

He took his shoes off to go near his house mandir and relit Paro's diya, he comes to aarti if its being conducted and accepts prasad when its offered, albeit by Paro, only. He did go to the mandir for his father, even if it was for the first time in years. Most importantly, he didn't outright reject the concept of Bholenath at the crucial train scene. He did not deride Paro's faith , he countered it with logic and explained that a benevolent God would not act the way Paro was interpreting her sacrifice to mean.

If he was an agnostic, that train scene is where the disbelief or rejection would have come out---- as she was stripping him of his very life by leaving. He didn't reject her faith then, but used his faith in response for his argument. He gave the situation a logical direction by pointing out the flaws in her way of doing a penance for her Bholenath. I think he is definitely a passive believer and not a full on atheist like ASR.

He does not reject rituals, he doesn't really get the nuances because he is not used to them. The laddoo thing--he tried to eat the prasad laddoos (which even I know you shouldn't do before the puja), but when Maithli explained about their use, he accepted that quite sweetly. Its more an issue of him not having been brought up in the habit of rituals, and made uncomfortable by them now than of him being too practical for them.

With Rudra, the only thing that has mattered consistently is Paro. I dont think he would fast to be romantic. He is DEFINITELY not your traditional romantic hero--even now. His devotion and love is very much in his actions, not words or gestures. He would fast because she wants to do it, and since she cant, given her health, he's picking up the challenge, shielding his wife from having to do it while she's injured. He might be fasting on HER behalf-- since she wants to and cannot.

To him, this would be one more service for his wife, as if one half of the couple doing something the other half needs to do is perfectly fine-- and it doesn't matter which half (an argument my husband uses all the time to get me to go see his parents when he's feeling too lazy to make the drive).

He might be fasting for a bit of practical additional Divine help in his quest to keep her safe, thinking every little bit extra helps. Or he might be fasting as a surprise for his wife-her teej gift is his devotion to her in the form of pledging his body to her long life. Not to impress Maa Parvati, but to impress his Parvati. Its not that different from his physical pledge to her of protecting her with his very life if need be. I think he's fasting...but not for ANY if the usual corny reasons.

And any one of these reasons wouldn't be beyond the Rudra we have come to know.
And this would be in keeping with the quietly obsessive lover Rudra has become. With Rudra, I have come to find that the simplest explanation for his actions post the Delhi trip have been-- how does this benefit Paro, make Paro happy, or keep Paro safe? If there is a way for some action of Rudra's to do any one of these three things--he simply does that action.

Great POV 😊

If he fasting for her, CV's defiantly going to give us a Rudra style explanation.
A lot of us not expecting he is fasting, not even Paro expecting that. And Rudra is unpredictable, so why not 😆

I was thinking the same and it is not because he is religious but he knows that paro is fasting and lying to him and he could not bear to eat when she is fasting.

As romantic as it sounds, it would be pretty illogical to have him do it lol.. he doesn't believe in it plain and simple..

Samrat is fasting for Maitili - n its his type.. lol.. but next year i would expect Rudra to do it! Not yet..its too soon for that much mushiness from him..
