I dont know, ladies, while i totally understand loveanime and rituben's point on the uncharacteristic nature of a secret fast for Rudra i am not convinced he is not religious. He took his shoes off to go near his house mandir and relit her diya, he comes to aarti if its being conducted and accepts prasad when its offered, albeit by Paro, only. He didnt outright reject the concept of Bholenath at the crucial train scene or deride Paro's faith , he countered it with logic and explained that a benevolent God would not act the way Paro was interpreting her sacrifice. If he was an agnistic even, that is where the disbelief or rejection would have come out as she was stripping him of his very life by leaving. He didnt reject her faith then but gave it logical and more sane direction by pointing out her flaws in her way of doing a penance for her Bholenath. I think he is definitely a passive believer but not an aethist like ASR. Its more an issue of him not having been brought up in the habit of rituals and made uncomfortable by them now than of him being too practical for them. And with him the only thing that matters consistently is Paro. He might be fasting FOR her since she wants to and cannot, as a service for his wife, as if one half of the couple doing something the other half should do is good enough and it doesnt matter which half (an argument my husband uses all the time to get me to go see his parents when he's feeling lazy). He might be fasting for a bit of practical additional Divine help in his quest to keep her safe thinking every little bit extra helps...Or he might be fasting as a surprise for his wife-her teej gift is his devotion to her in the form of pledging his body to her long life. Its not that different from his physical pledge to her of protecting her with his very life if need be. I think he's fasting...but not for ANY if the usual corny reasons. And any one of these reasons wouldnt be beyond the Rudra we have come to know.
