Paro was looking forward to the weekend she would spend at the Haveli. Last month had been so much fun she thought, remembering cheekily the pranks she played on Rudra.
The BSD jeep came to pick her up and she convinced herself she wasn't disappointed he hadn't come. Reaching the haveli she was welcomed by everyone except the one! Was he avoiding her because he was still mad at her from last time she wondered with a frown? Oh well!
" Paro Bhabisa.. Rudra Bhaisa bought chocolates from Jaipur. He saved one for you" Sunehri gave Parvati a bar. Hmm maybe he did think about me after all Parvati thought as she took a large bite and her face crinkled. Something was odd. Given her love for chocolates, she was half way through before she noticed the handmade wrapper which read "Jallad Candy Company" and had a BSD logo on it. Parvati spent the rest of the evening keeping close to the bathroom stomach churning. On one of her breaks, anti-diarrheal pills and a glass of buttermilk appeared in the room reminding her of the prank she played on him during her last visit.
Round One Rudra 1 Paro 0
As the family gathered for breakfast the next morning Rudra walked in with a formal "Hello Parvati" and then thoroughly ignored her. Paro was busy setting the table and didn't notice he had maneuvered the family so that Paro was seated to his left. He scraped his chair closer to hers drumming up her heartbeats. Before she could react, Rudra reached under the table to grab her right hand firmly in his left, while starting to eat. Unaware of the goings on Ranawat Sr fondly said" Parvati i eat.." at which point Rudra piped in
"ya Parvati don't be shy..eat, what are you waiting for ?" while continuing to hold her hand firmly.
Unable to release her right hand, Parvati waited for a bit before trying to eat with her left hand when a shocked Maamisa yelled "Parvati! What is this ?why are you eating with your left hand?"
"I er umm" Paro tugged her hand begging him with her eyes but his hold only tightened. Giving her a little pinch Rudra said "Leave it Kaakisaa, maybe her right hand is busy or hurt". Involuntarily Paro went "oww" to feel every one staring at her. "yes yes I got hurt" Paro lied clutching at his excuse.
"Do you want someone to feed you Paro?" Rudra's voice caressed, his eyes smirked reminding her of the day he had fed her. Mythili & Samrat aware of what was happening under the table gave each other knowing looks. As suddenly as he had caught it Rudra let go of her hand and ate nonchalantly as if a tug-of-war hadn't happened under the table. Parvati looked up confused and flustered before starting to eat with her right hand.
Round Two Rudra 2 Paro 0
Rudra couldn't believe he was doing something this childish as he stood on the courtyard balcony waiting for Paro to bring the older Ranawats their mid-day chai. His heart softened for a second as he saw her delicate figure but onward soldier his mind prodded, reminding him of her pranks! Rudra waited until she was just under the balcony before dumping a huge bucket of water on her. The whole family ran into the courtyard hearing the commotion caused by a sputtering and gasping Parvati dropping the tea tray.
"Kya hua Parvati Bhaisa? Mausam bigad gayi?" Maamisa's sarcastic enquiry had the family howling with laughter.
"Haan.. paRro what happened?" drawled Rudra rolling his R. Parvati stood there soaking wet, not even remotely aware of how a bucket full of water had upended itself on her!
"Go change Paro, don't stand there in wet clothes" Rudra admonished half with concern and half with mischief. "Sunehri get her some adrak chai or she'll catch a cold!"
Round Three Rudra 3 Parvati 0
Dazed Parvati walked into her room to change. To her dismay all her clothes missing, her bag contained only his blue kurta and pajamas. What the? What happened to her clothes and how did his get here? Oh God!What was he up to? She quickly changed into the Kurta, dried her hair and stalked down angrily trying not to trip. Rudra was waiting near the stairs and gave a wolf whistle as she came down
"Looking good Paro. didn't know you liked my Kurta so much!" he said loudly. Darn! Now the whole family was staring at her. "I, I... You " Paro stammered in her anger.
Rudra stepped closer "You are you and I am Rudra Pratap Ranawat aren't I Paro ? he added smugly with a wink. Left completely disarmed by the fact that he could wink, Parvati forgot to question him about her clothes.
Round Four Rudra 4 Parvati 0
Parvati found her clothes out in the backyard. Mysteriously, all of them were soaking wet and drying on the clothesline. Though Sunehri and Mythili offered their clothes she decided to stay in the hateful kurta earning many meaningful glances and smirks that went unnoticed by her. She decided to make tea again for Bapusas. "God in heaven why are sugar containers always so high up in this house" she frowned as she stood on her toes trying to reach it. Dhak dhak pounded her heart as she realized Rudra was maybe 3 inches behind her. Paro didn't dare to breath. "Need help? "He whispered in her ear and reached up for the container closing his hand over her shaking one. As she stood there trying to breathe normally he walked away with a swagger thinking "There's more .. Baby!" Paro hurriedly made the tea and took it over to the Ranawat brothers in the courtyard. Bapusa took a hearty sip and his face changed but he impishly waited for his brother to drink his. Tasting his tea, Dhanveer Ranawat's face took on a ruddy hue and both the brothers looked at each other before choking with laughter.
"Parvati tum teek hai?"
"Ji Baapu sa, kyun?"
"The tea" they laughed some more " the tea .. you put salt instead of sugar"
Both brothers watched with glee as Parvati's eyes rounded like goli rotis and she ran off muttering
"Rudra...Jallad.. I am going to kill you for this".
Round Five Rudra 5 Parvati 0
Rudra waited near the door to his room expecting her. Parvati stormed in yelling " where are you Rudra?" "Here Paro" he called closing the door shut behind him. Parvati spun around and he deftly caught both her wrists in his. Eyes blazing she sputtered "You messed their tea. You gave me the salt container . you " only then realizing he had tied her hands together with a dupatta, hers no less! "Rudra.. what ..." another dupatta around her mouth and eyes cut her off mid-sentence. Parvati could feel her heart pounding uncontrollably as she felt herself being lifted in his strong arms. "Trust Me Paro!"
"Don't struggle or we'll both fall" he restrained her. "Good girl!" he said and she felt herself being put down on a ledge. Rudra quickly untied her before jumping down. Paro could hear furniture scraping as she focused her eyes to find she was sitting on his armoire much like she had once before. Settling on the divan opposite to her "Like the view? If you want to come down, jump and I'll catch you. There are rats down here" he said with a smug grin.
Dhilsher and Dhanveer walked in just as she retorted "I don't see any rats.. just a big Rakshas.. Jallad". Grins turned to hoots of laughter as they saw Parvati sitting on the armoire muttering about Rakshasas. "Rudra get her down .. she might get hurt"
"I'm watching her Ranawat .. she'll be up there just until the rats go"
"You are calling us rats?"
"Nahi .. not you!"
"Come on Bhai sa we are not wanted here" the brothers walked off in a theatrical huff.
"Rudra get me down"
"Rudra Pratap Ranwat get me down now!!"
Rudra looked up from the book he was pretending to read. "I like it when you say my full name..sounds sexy! Since you pleased Thakur Ranawat ..down you come chori"
He moved furniture and climbed up, making her step gingerly on the chair on top of the table on top of other things.
Round Six Rudra 6 Parvati 0
Their breaths hitched as his breath fanned her neck and he pressed her head into his chest protecting her as he brought her down. Their proximity was unnerving to both as Rudra stood her against a pillar as she still clung to his shirt for support. He brushed shaking fingers on her cheek. Paro quirked an eyebrow "cobwebs" he replied huskily.. next her hair was brushed softly.
"You ok Pari?" he asked gently "were you scared?"
She shook her head "Not with you around" before biting her lip, blushing.
"Pari you angry with me?" "No.. not really"
"I missed you" both whispered simultaneously, wanting but not wanting the other to hear their confession. Both looked away, a little embarrassed and a more than a bit nervous. Their eyes met again tentatively, Rudra's with a proud gleam and Paro's with a softer light. He took her hand and she held his as they walked out of his(their?) room in a content haze. Their relationship would always be one of equals, life might give one of them an upper hand for a while. But they would always balance each other out giving and taking like an ocean's eternal dance! After all
