I will tell you another one ...even now in North Indian villiages , ppl donot marry within the same villiage , ie a boy and a girl of the same villiage cannot marry each other as are considered brothers- sisters.

This sounds silly but actually is a huge probelm ...leads to killings etc.

Never seen, heard or experienced such happenings..hence a little dumbstruck and confused on this..it does sound a little silly..thanks Guinea for the brief

I did not think it strange as women are not supposed to be part of the barat.

However, what is strange is the no female relative of the bride is accompanying her to new home. Usually a cousin or aunt goes with her, to keep her company.
At least that is what happens in my experience.

Should have done my research 😆

Oh this is a huge probelm ...you must have heard of honour killings in N indian villiages ...this is primarily the reason. A boy and a girl of the same villiage fall in love ...they are hunted and killed sometimes , its brutal 😕

Yes, women and men and their interactions are kept under tight control by village elders or powerful ones even today in many villages.

BTW, I have been part of a marriage where no woman accompanied the baraat (I was on the bride's side), so these practices are very much prevalent till date.

U like they say in India " we have several centuries which live together " . A large part of my extended family lives in the hindi heartland - meerut , allahbad etc. Meerut is a two hour drive from delhi but its a different world out there...

Wow...Getting a lesson here today.
Sad...some of us take so many things for granted.
