CHAPTER 5

Khanak had become a component of her room after Saaket's death. Remembering about the spent time together had become only job of her life. She never talked to any one.Even Payal tried to make her normal by teasing her. But nothing seemed to work. Even smile had disowned her, the very thing that described her.

Madhavi and Sunil came to meet her, to take her home but Because Shantanu told them to not force her to move in their house they never tried to convince her in spite of the fact that now she belonged to khandelwals .

Radhika who would be her mother in law in just 2 months now considered Khanak as her own daughter. And felt exactly the way Ragini felt for her. She was happy that Khanak dint refuse to marry Shantanu that day as Saaket wanted it.

Where all people were trying to console Khanak people outside had started making stories. Deepak and Ragini were hurt by hearing it. Some people would just ask Ragini why she was here when she is married. In the beginning they dint bother much but now all the limits were crossed when people started accusing her of being in a secret relationship with Shantanu.

As usual Deepak was sitting in the cabin when he accidently happened to go out of his cabin to check the dates with his secretary when he heard two of his clients talking about his daughter's virtual affair. This was the time he thought of making a move of the everyday's drama that was taking place at home and called Shantanu Hello Beta Shantanu Deepak here I need to talk to you urgently.Do you have time?

Sharma's house

In the evening Khanak as usual was in her room looking at the engagement album. Where she saw a picture in which it she, Saaket and Shantanu were there. And she had salt water on her cheeks from the eyes which had swollen by now.

Ragini was in kitchen when the bell Rang and she opened the door, she was shocked to see Shantanu there at the door with that guilty face. Hello Aunty I am here to take Khanak along.

She is in her room as if telling him to go himself to convince her. And Shantanu followed it as if he could listen to her thoughts.

He moved ahead in her room .On seeing him Payal moved out of the room understanding that may be he had to have some important discussion with her in private.

Hi he could mumble after complete 30 seconds silence. She turned to look at him from the album. He could see that she was looking at the picture but ignored it so as to not to embarrass her. He could see her face that had gone pale, he felt like taking her in arms and telling her how much he cared for her. He could see her sharp clavicle line that was more prominent now. After long pause she managed to look at him.

I am here to take you to your own house. He said. Hearing that she had tears in her eyes, they had started dripping with more frequency. I know that you don't like me but I will have to do it for Saaket. You are my responsibility now. Even dad and mom were asking about you. Look we are married now. He tried to sneak through the corner of his eye just to check her expressions. But they were blank as if their marriage dint matter to her. Seeing this he tried to be more clear. And so people have started speaking things about family..So'?

How could you do this to your best friend? How could you behave as if it does not affect you? Just because people have started talking about your family you want me to come with you..God!!! you are just impossible. How could you be so selfish. I mean its just a month your friend has expired.

Hearing all this Shantanu's blood had started boiling that how could she doubt his friendship with Saaket. He wanted to answer her to that but fortunately he realized the pain she was going through. And went ahead to explain her about the real reason. Listen you will have to come with me. If not for my family come for Saaket's parents, your parents.. She could not say no on hearing about Arnav and Radhika. As they were the more to suffer due to loss of their only son. I will come but just for the sake of Saaket's parents and my Parent's don't think I am doing this for you in any way.

He managed to nod his head on this statement as this was the most thing he wanted to happen. They came out from her room. He bend down to touch Ragini's and Deepak's feet. And Shantanu could see worry free face of Deepak the reason of which only he knew. Khanak hugged Ragini and she just stared at Khanak with a discontent expression. She hugged Deepak and Payal. She had never thought that this will ever happen to her. When she was just about to step outside the door Ragini called her out Khanak just a minute. And went in the kitchen ,came out with a sindoor and held it in front of Shantanu. Beta you are married now ,in our culture you should not be with bare neck and partition free of sindoor. It does not look good. Shantanu will you please fill the partition? Ragini asked with the authority in her tone. Of course yes he said. He lifted his hand with a pinch full of sindoor and placed it on Khanak's forehead partition. She closed her eyes when his fingers brushed with her skin and some of it sprinkled on her nose which he tried to clear off. But Khanak's sudden side movement of her head so that his hands don't reach her nose made him uncomfortable. And he just went out to his car's passengers seat opened the door for her ,went and sat in his driving seat. She sat in the passengers seat and said good bye to her parents. They left for home.

Khandelwal's house

Harilal opened the door, he was their old servant and like a family to them now. rey Shantanu baba u got Bahu along'that's great.Come Beta ..no wait and ran inside to get an arti thali. He came out with it and called Madhavi.

Shantanu's room

She entered and scanned the room so as to avoid any conversation with him. Pretending being busy in taking in the new room's information she went near the terrace door that was open she stepped out into the terrace and noticed a swing there. Her natural reaction made her sit on it with hands folded as if keeping herself isolated from the world. Shantanu saw it from the distance and felt sad for her.

There was knock on the door,he opened it and saw Madhavi standing there where is Khanak?

And Shantanu just signed her with his hands about Khanak's whereabouts. Madhavi understood his signs and called out Bahu can you come in for a moment? I have something to tell you.

Yes Ma ...I mean Aunty she came and stood in front of her. Madhavi sensed her cramped moment and touched her forehead with palm you can call me Ma I won't mind. This reminded Khanak of Radhika ,Saaket's mom. Come here and sit with for sometime Madhavi said.Now you are Shan's wife and a part of this family. She said with a soft smile on her lips. And Saaket was like my son so don't ever hesitate to be free. It's your house. Ask for whatever you want. And she looked at Shantanu as if asking him to come near. He came as an acknowledgement. Shan take care of my Bahu . Madhavi held her face and placed a peck on her forehead. Khanak after a month felt like smiling that too Shantanu noticed was without the real happiness but a compromise.

Shantanu felt sad for her loss at this tender age. She was engaged to her love married to him. He strode towards the washroom . Went inside and looked at himself in the mirror and Madhavi's words echoed in his mind Now you are Shan's wife and a part of this family.And Saaket was like my son so don't ever hesitate to be free. It's your house. Ask whatever you want.

She is my responsibility now. I will have to make sure that she is always happy with me, if not that at least not sad with me. He decides to talk to her about the marriage that took place between them in such a condition.

CHAPTER 6

Shantanu was all set to talk to Khanak. The moment he stepped out of the washroom his eyes searched for his wife and he was shocked to see Khanak fallen on the ground. He leapt to reach her and seeing her forehead having abrasion due to her head hitting hard on the near by wall, kneeled down in a sudden motion and cried out loud for help Mom Mom..Please come here. Rubbing her hands with his. Mom fast.. see what has happened to Khanak. He stroke the wound with his thumb and he had started panicking after seeing liquid blood clot on his thumb.

Madhavi came running with Akshay and Khushboo.

Guys I am introducing new characters now onwards

Akshay Khandelwal- Shantanu's elder brother married to Khushboo .He works as assistant director in khandelwal industries.

Khushboo Khandelwal- A very obedient daughter and wife. She considers Shantanu to be his brother and advices him like a very good friend.

Dr Mishra- Khandelwal's old family doctor. He was an MBBS and known as a very good doctor.

What happened to Bahu? She ran and shook Shantanu Shan tell me what happened? Akshay call Dr Mishra Fast.Hurry up. Khushboo dialed the number and asked him to visit their house right away.

Shantanu lifted Khanak's starved body easily and placed her on the bed as lightly as he could. Madhavi came and sat next to her ,Shantanu stood near the bed staring blankly at her. Doctor came and started scrutinizing her closely. He checked her eyes her veins and declared that it is nothing to worry about and she fainted because of iron deficiency and lack of proper diet which Shantanu knew was because of the grief she was going through since past few months.

Dr Mishra gave her an injection for early recovery along with some medicines and told Shantanu to take her proper care by monitoring her diet Shantanu there is nothing to worry about just sufficient iron intake will do and said good bye to others in the room. Akshay accompanied Dr Mishra till main door.

Madhavi was with Shantanu and Khanak in their room. Ok beta Shan now don't worry she will gain conscious in sometime. Just call me when she gets up so I will ask Harilal to get her dinner in the room itself. Now I will go and instruct cooks to make some leafy vegetables and almond pudding with chestnut flour.And left the room.

Shantanu worked on the deals on his laptop on the couch and kept peeping at Khanak if she woke up. An hour past like that and he dint leave his place till she gained consciousness.His phone rang and in order to not to disturb her he answered it in the first ring itself which was very uncommon, making sure she was not disturbed. He went in the balcony to talk on the phone and after that he came inside and ran to Khanak seeing her stretching her hand to pick up the glass of water. He in the process made her stop in between and handed over the glass to her. His fingers brushed with hers and she immediately brought the glass near her lips to drink water as she was feeling weak. She drunk whole of it and craved for more hence lifted up the jug to add more water when Shantanu saw her weak hand trembling Give it to me I will pour it for you. Placing his palm on back of her hand. She jerked away her arm as though she has come in contact with a backbiter and stepped back Don't touch me. Stay back she yelled I don't want your help. I don't want any kind of favor from you. Let me be on my own She cried .I don't want to live she howled.

She was damaged in and out he could see. He was in a baffled state .He dint know how to console her . She had breached herself to the core. He knew her bubbly nature she had when with Saaket but now it was a completely opposite personality. He hated himself for not being able to help her in any ways. He saw her disoriented mentally due to the tragedy. Please Khanak what is wrong with you? Whats the reason for this behavior of yours.?

She got up and bolted past him to stand away from him in abhorrence. Teardrops were trickling down from her eyes. Her eyes had plumped out due to continuous oozing out of water. She wheezed I don't want to live she tore apart I want to die. I can't live without him. why god did that to me.? its all my mistake... she sobbed its all my mistake she screeched .She went weak in her knees and plunged on the floor .Shantanu advanced a bit to support her if needed . He held her by shoulder when she was about to hit hard on head .

Don't touch me she shouted. Stay away I said. I don't want to be touched by a back-stabber ,a betrayer . He was outraged on hearing those words A betrayer ,a back-stabber what makes you think that? for god sake Khanak he was very good friends with me .in fact he is the only friend I had. he was more than a friend to me. We knew each other for more than 5 yrs. How could you think such things about me. He shook her arms .

Khanak still with tears in her eyes then why you agreed to marry me? could not you refuse to do it? and how did you have mangalsutra with you at that moment then?

Stop over reacting. Look…just clam down and listen to me patiently. I married to you because of Saaket. And as far as mangalsutra is concerned, do you reme….Shantanu was interrupted by a door knock.

Shantanu opened the door and saw Harilal was standing with the tray carrying food for Khanak's and Madhavi accompanied him. Shan I got this for Khanak. She entered and placed it on nearby table. By now Khanak had composed herself comfortably on bed.

Beta c'mon have this in front of me then I will leave. At least I will be satisfied that you have had your dinner properly with a motherly tone. No aunty I will have it you don't worry. Looking at Shantanu with honest eyes.

No . You have it then I will go. Also then you have to take medicines. Madhavi instructed. Madhavi looked at Shantanu who was watching this from far distance who had a weird worry in his eyes.Madhavi called him to sit next to Khanak. See Shan make sure she has everything and then make her take her medicines. I will go down to check on others at dinning table.

Madhavi ,no matter how sophisticated she was, she was a typical house wife. Taking care of her husband and children in every way possible. She went down.

Here Khanak had her food and medicines and Shantanu went down for having dinner. After sometime Shantanu came in his room and saw Khanak standing near the railing of the balcony. He moved towards her and stood next. She had her front locks flying back due to cool breeze. And few hair in it stuck to her temple because of teardrops making Shantanu notice her fresh tears still forming in her black pools. Cool air hit her face. He could not stop staring her You need to take rest. You are very weak right now. I am ready to tell you everything but after you recover completely.

Khanak turned around and looked at the double bed in the room that had been arranged for two people. She turned her back at him and dint move a single inch. He registered her awkwardness seeing her palm turn into fists pressing her chiffon on sides. See ..umm.. you rest on bed I will sleep on couch. I understand your hesitation. Actually I would have preferred guest house but till the time you get better I cant leave you alone to play with your life just the way you did some time ago. You can trust me on the fact that I will never touch you unless its for saving your life .he mumbled with pleading eyes hoping for an yes which he dint get till the end.

He left the place and took out some quilts to cover at night. Placed two on bed incase she needs extra and one for himself. He went to sleep but moved with one of the blankets to balcony and handed her one Here take this .Its cold out here it may spoil your health more. She took it And he went inside to sleep.

Khanak was gazing at the sky looking at the stars and her attention was caught by one of the twinkling stars. Seeing it she remembered the stories her grandma used to tell her about a person turning in to a star after death. She had a soft smile remembering Saaket and her engagement and the dreams they had seen for their future. But after sometime she starting sobbing realizing that it cant be true now.

She rested on bed and leaning against the bed top. Shantanu was sleeping on the couch exactly opposite to it. In order to not to look at him she closed her eyes and drift away to sleep that was demanded by her fragile body.

CHAPTER 7

Ah ...tsk..tsk...ouch!! ..Khanak woke up and sat on bed resting her back on the bed top wall taking support of the bed holding her head with right hand. She saw that Shantanu was not there on the couch and the quilts were arranged properly. She thought that may be he is off for office and turned around to check the time. Seeing that it was 10 minutes past 8 ,she rushed into the bathroom . She kept thinking what others must be thinking about her in her new family. Especially Ma she thought. She was in front of mirror adjusting the veil of her saree and looked at herself once and saw the neck without mangalsutra. She remembered that before going to washroom she had left it near the lamp on the side table as she dint want it to be the reason for others discussion. She went to take it when she encountered one of the diaries which had a letter kept on it with 'To Khanak' written on it that urged her to check it.

Dear Khanak,My would be wife

I know it will seem stupid that I am writing this letter because we are engaged now and the things I wanna confess I can do it in front of you instead of penning it down but wanna tell you that there are somethings those can't be expressed by saying them.

I wanna tell you that Thankyou for accepting me. Loving me and considering me to be one of the persons who can take your care. I love you honey .I love you a lot. I love it when you look at me because that's the reason for my existence, I love it when you blush because that makes me touch you more,I love it when you get mad at me because I get a chance to observe you .I love it when you smile as it encourages me to make you smile more. I love it when you cry because that's the time I get to be close to you.

Honey I love you so much that I can never think of living without you. Even if I die in future ,I will always wish for you to get married to a guy who will care for you. Who will love you the way you are. Trust me where ever I am I will feel it like being in heaven.

Saaket

Khanak had silent tears rolling down her eyes reading the letter from the eyes which just had a break of night I lo.. ve you too.. Saaket. Please come back..Please ..Please.. I need you.. she had started sobbing helplessly . Her heart was craving for more of his words after the letter and so she picked up the diary. She started from the beginning, little did she know that it was Shantanu's and not Saaket's.

He had noted down all the incidents. She read the only ones with Saaket's name appearing in them as she was just interested in that. She read the one that described the fight she had with Shantanu on the road .Next she read was the one where she had planned a meeting with Saaket in one of the restaurants and Shantanu had all of a sudden come there for his one of the company meetings. All the memories started flushing up to the surface. She skipped the ones in between and then it was the engagement day's part she came across

It was Saaket's engagement with Khanak today. I am very happy for my friend that he is getting committed to the person he loves. He was very happy along with his parents and my parents Khanak for a moment thought that Shantanu is not that bad person also. But then she felt disgusted after reading about her Everyone was waiting for the bride to come down for the ceremony. I was busy looking for Saaket thinking that we together came out of washroom. I saw him with his eyes fixed at something as if it was a beautiful creature that might just disappear if he moves his gaze even a millimeter from its place . I followed his fixed stare. She looked breathtaking in that bridal attire with maroon Saree hugging her as the second skin. For a moment I forgot where I was. I had started getting goose bumps on my whole body. I felt a sudden urge of feeling her long mane. There was so much of innocence in her jet black eyes. I think I like her Khanak was extremely ferocious after reading this that she felt like bumping Shantanu off .And thank god that Saaket called me for ceremony or I would have committed a horrible aberration. I came home that day and was acutely annoyed at myself for letting me drift away with that feeling. I can't even express the remorse to Saaket for this dreadful transgression for he being my best friend. How can I be so ruthless ,inhuman to do this.I have treated my best friend worst than a brutal enemy. I wanted to kill myself for thinking such things about her. God please forgive me for doing that. I promise you that I will prove myself to be good friend by doing something valuable for them.

30th Jan 2012 -(The day before Saaket died)

I am very happy today that I have got a chance to conciliate for my mistake. Saaket is planning a surprise for Khanak and he has asked me for help. unlike himself for the first time in life he agreed to arrange for the surprise which he never is interested in, in Matheran. He thought of these things a wastage of time. Saaket is planning a surprise at Matheran tomorrow. He is gonna gift her the sacred thread of black and golden beads and the letter. I m very happy for them.

31st Jan 2012

She saw a blank page with the sequel not continued .She saw this date and all the memories of that day got alive playing on that blank paper. Saaket and her in the car , call from Shantanu and the abominable accident that took place and the day Saaket passed away.

She completely forgot about going down to meet Ma after this happened.She was so pissed off after reading the diary that she wanted to speak out about this to Shantanu and get the answers to her questions. Khanak fuming with anger he married me because he liked me? how can he do that? how ruthless? .She waited for him to come from office. She dint leave her room the whole day .Also she dint have her lunch even after Madhavi insisting her.
