Phew finally part 34!😃

Part 34

Two and a half months later

30th April 2011

"BHABHI!!!" Khanak cried pointing at Khushboo accusingly. "Yay AAP kya kar rahee hain?!"

Khushboo looked at Khanak guiltily and turned her attention ack to the sink. She was holding a glass of undrunk milk in her hand and had only just tilted it towards the sink when Khanak had caught her red handed. Stomach protruding in her seventh month, Khushboo was still not taking adequate care of herself as far as Khanak was concerned. Often she would create a fuss when Khushboo would not eat properly and one day when she had seen a white residue in the sink, she had become suspicious about Khushboo's milk drinking habits too.

"Errmm main toh buss makhi nikaal rahee thee----doodh main say----" Khushboo said trying to sound nonchalant.

"Jhooot nahi bolay bhabhi! Aap doodh sink main baha rahee thee!" Khanak said narrowing her eyes.

Khushboo looked at Khanak huffily and slammed the glass on the kitchen counter, making a sad face. "I don't want to have thisss---" she whined like a baby. Khanak looked at her understandingly and felt sorry for her.

"What's all this commotion?" Madhvi entered the kitchen suddenly and asked. Khushboo and Khanak both looked at Madhvi and gulped. "Why is that glass of milk there?" she asked scanning the kitchen.

"Kuch nahi Mummy jee----Wohh Khushboo bhabhi ---buss doodh pee rahee thee----toh err" Khanak faltered then caught on soon enough, "Tohh wohh yay doodh toh thanda hogaya na---toh yay MAIN pee rahee hoon----" Khanak said going over to the glass and picking it up. "MainKhushboo bhabhi kay liyay garam doodh bana rahee hoon----"

Madhvi smiled and went over to Khanak. "Haan beta peeyo----you need to have all the milk you can too----aakhir buhat jald tum bhee toh----mujhay----" she paused and lifting Khanak's chin, she looked lovingly into her eyes, "mujhay dadi bananay walee hon?"

Khanak immediately broke eye contact from Madhvi and looked away, a mildly uncomfortable expression on her face. Khushboo looked at Khanak suspiciously but Madhvi seemed to have noticed nothing. She was in a good mood and humming cheerfully at the pleasures of old age, she left the kitchen.

"Khanak? " Khushboo said walking over to her. "I think you need some explaining to do---" she raised her eyebrows at her.

"No I don't!" Khanak said vehemently, thoroughly averting Khuhboo's eyes. Keeping the glass of milk back on the counter, Khanak rushed out of the kitchen mumbling something about ironing "Shaantanu's clothes". Khushboo looked on with the expression of a detective.

30th April 2011, 03:00 PM

Khanak entered her room and closed the door, relieved. She tidied up the room, then ironed Shaan's clothes and prayed. Closing her eyes and pressing her hands together, sheprayed for a beautiful futurefor herself and Shaan like she had always done since the day she had come back from that place that had changed her life. It had been Khanak's seventh day in the hospital when Mitul had come up to her and said "Bhabhi----aap ghar jaa sakti hain----you're fine now." As Khanak thought back to the time, the memories seemed blur; it wasn't as though she was forgetting what had happened two and a half monhs ago. It was just that she could not register clearly what her mind had been thinking at that time. For her emotions and her brain was going haywire.

Finally the shock of losing her baby had begun to set in during the last days of her stay int eh hospital, present more heavily in the air whenever Shaan was with her, holding her hand. She spoke less but nodded and shook her head more. It did not bother Shaan for he knew what she was going through. Plus, no words were needed anyway in the relationship they shared. Sometimes, however, Shaan would find it important to say to Khanak, pushing back a strand of her hair the golden words "I love you". Khanak's blank eyes would lighten up at the words and she'd make eye contact with Shaan and nod.

That was when Shaan decided to take her to that place. Only visiting that place would make Khanak snap out of her grief which she had drowned into. Only that place.

Khanak smiled sadly, her eyes still closed, her hands still pressed in prayer, as she remembered Shaan telling her he was to take her there.

24th February 2011, 04:00 PM

"Mujhay tumhay----tumhay----kaheen laikar jaana hain----" Shaan said, holding Khanak's hand in the hospital on the day she was getting discharged. He was sitting close to her on the bed, waiting for Madhvi to come and get her changed from a hospital gown to a sari.

Khanak looked up blankly. "Kahan?" she whispered. Shaan smiled and pressed her hand warmly. Moving even closer he took a deep breath. Khanak saw a spark of fear in his eyes which disappeared the next instant. "Shaantanu?--- kahaan?"

Shaan held Khanak's face and pressed his forehead with hers. Khanak heard him gulp. "Khanak----tum meray saath chalo----wahan chal kar hee main tumko-----tumko bataoo ga-----" he whispered breathlessly.

Khanak felt a lump in her throat at the warmth and was it uncertainty, in Shaan's voice. Something about Shaan's voice created a thrill of scary excitement in her stomach. And as Shaan moved back she knew that Shaan was going through the same emotion. "Hmmm" she managed to say before Madhvi and Dadi bustled into the room, creating a fuss about being late to take Khanak home.

24th February 2011, 04:00 PM

A cool yet pleasant breeze blew across the huge expanse of land where shaan had stopped his car. Khanak got confused as she got out but Shaan had quickly got off from his side and went over to Khanak, immediately taking her hand. The pallu of Khanak's light blue sari hit the bonnet of the car harshly as the wind strengthened. Khanak looked at Shaan. His face was expressionless, but looking closely she thought Shaan, too, was hiding his anxiousness. Ignoring her pallu waving from one side to the other Khanak looked around.

"Shaantanu----yay hum----kahan ayay hain?" she asked again looking at a gate with railings. From the middle of the rods she could make out a huge garden inside.

Shaan pressed Khanak's hand tightly than usual and took her towards the gate, saying nothiing. Inspite of the weather being pleasant she felt the wetness of sweat on Shaan's palm. The gate opened and Khanak stopped in her tracks abruptly at what she saw. It was a beautiful graveyard with small tombstones jutting out from scattered places. Her lips pursed on their own accord as she understood where Shaan had brought her. It was to meet her baby.

And just as the desperation to see where her baby lay entered her head, she realized that she had already reached there. Shaan had already glided her to the spot without her being the any wiser. She looked at Shaan opened his mouth to take a deep breath again, then held her shoulders. "Main tumhay humaray betay say milanay laya hoon Khanak-----".

Khanak closed her eyes bitterly and sat down in front of the tomb as though some force was pushing her towards it. The tomb was small, just around two feet and was made of marble. Khanak touched it and felt the icy cold marble electrifying her numb hand. Shaan sat down too and put his arm around Khanak's shoulder.

"Humara----beta----" Khanak whispered.

"Hmmm" Shaan nodded, touching the marble too. "Mainay socha tha-----socha tha---kah yahaan aoo ga---toh tumharay saath---tumharay saath hee aoo ga-----" he confided. "I couldn't---couldn't have done this alone----couldn't have done this without you-----" he said softly. "Humara beta bhee---shayad yaheen chahta tha-----" Shaan's hold on Khanak's shoulder tightened.

Khanak kept staring at the tiny tomb. Her hands touched every inch of it, removing dust from it fussily. And then what was threatening to happen to her, happened. She cried. She cried softly as Shaan's warm hand touched her icy cold ones; cried at the realization that a part of her lay beneath that sand and that marble and she could do nothing about it. Shaan cried too, rubbing Khanak's shoulder all the while. At scattered intervals they would stop crying, then start again, holding each other, lost in the grief of their son who was no more.

"Humara beta iss dunya main 15th February ko aanay wala tha-----" Shaan whispered through tears. Khanak looked up with puffy eyes as understanding dawned. That is why the date had been so special in her heart!

"Humari shaadi----" Khanak began.

Shaan smiled. "Haan humari shaadi-----shayad isee ko kismat kahtay hain?" he said now fidgeting with his son's name "Sushant Khandelwal" on the grave stone. "We need to star again Khanak-----start again from here----start from where it almost ended-----humara beta bhee yahi chahta hain-----hain na?" Shaan asked.

"Haan----" Khanak replied as fresh tears filled her eyes. " Ek naee shuruaat" she smiled as Shaan hugged her, wrapping her applu around her shivering form.

"Khanak!!!" Khushboo barged into Khanak's room making Khanak jump and come out of her stream of memories. " WE sweetheart need to talk!"

Khanak looked at Khushboo extremely uncomfortably, then moved towards her cupboard waiting for Khushboo to say more. She had a feeling that she was, like always, stuck in a tough situation. Khushboo however, continued to look at Khanak suspiciously. Khanak averted her eyes again and came and sat on the sofa. Khusbhoo stride towards the sofa too.

"Khanak! Tumnay wahan kitchen main itnee ajeeb see shakal kyun banaee when Mom talked about a baby?!' Khusbhboo asked in ahurry getting immediately to business.

"Ajeeb see shakal? Nahi toh bhabhi----" Khanak looked across the room an said fidgetedly.

"DON'T lie Khanak! I know for sure tum SHARMAA nahi rahee thee!" Khushboo said accusingly.

"Haan who bhabhii-----" Khanak started.

"You and Shaan ARE planning a baby aren't you!? Geeta told you guys more than a MONTH ago that you can!" Khushboo cried.

Khanak still did not meet Khusboo's eyes. "Wohh bhabhi----wohh main aur Shaantanu soch rahay thay----kay kay ----itni jaldi kya hain-----"

"Really now!" Khushboo said folding her hands over her huge belly. "Mujhay toh Shaan nay bataya tha kay he can't WAIT to have another kid!"

Khanak smiled in her heart at the mention of the word "another" from Khushboo. She had reached that stage of her life where the tiniest mention of her son would bring her joy rather than grief.Visiting his grave had helped her so that. It had taught her to feel grateful that her son was atleast rememebered. "Wohh bhabhiii-----" Khanak faltered at her lie being caught.

Khushboo looked at Khanak disbelievingly then gasped. "You guys HAVE resumed your sex life haven't you!?!" she cried at Khanak's face.

"Bhabhi!!" Khanak exclaimed scared her eyes flying to the door of her room. "Ahista bolay! Koi sun laiga!"

"WHAT?!! IT'S TRUE!!!??" Khushboo yelled not listening to the contents of what Khanak had just said.

Khanak immediately got up and closed the door of her room. "Bhabhi pleaseee-----dheeray bolay" she said worried.

"You guys have NOT resumed your physical relationship and you want me to take that hands down!?! " Khushboo hissed. "WHAT may I ask is STOPPING you two!"

Khanak thought she had never felt this embarrassed and uncomfortable in her life. "Bhabhi!!Aap samajhtee kyun nahi! Kay yay---yay meray liyay---kitna mushkil hain-----" she whined like a baby.

Khushboo looked at Khanak as though she was crazy. "WHAT are you saying Khanak! TUM nay mana kiya hain? Tum nay? Aur Shaantanu maan gaya?" she asked shocked.

"Mainay Shaantanu ko---mana liya----" Khanak said looking down.

Khushboo resisted the urge to shake Khanak senselessly and bring some logic into her head. But she felt she had to calm down. Taking deep breaths she said in a would-be-calm voice "Khanak WHY may I ask did you do this? What is WRONG with you?!"

"Bhabhi!! Mujhay kuch YAAd nahi hain!!!" Khanak said miserably. "Mujhay kuch nahi aata!"

Khushboo opened her mouth in shock and looked towards the seiling hands raised in the air. "Please God! Please tell me I am NOT having this conversation with Khanak! Please tell me!" she begged the ceiling.

Khanak pouted. "Aap mera mazaak ura rahee hain na?" she asked softly.

"Nahi Khanak! Mujhay toh yay KHUD ek buht bara mazaak lug raha hain!" she said slowly with an unbelievable expression on her face. After a small pause she decided to start reasoning calmly with Khanak again. "Dekho Khanak----tumhay jo karna hain---uskay liyay you don't need your memory----you need Shaan---that is it----ismay yaadasht ki zaroorat nahi hain---you made a BABY with him for God's sake!"

"Haan bahbhi laikin mujhay yaad nahi hain! Making a baby with him!" Khanak whined illogically.

"But you DID!!" Khushboo yelled, thinking this conversation couldn't be dealt with in a calm way.

"Haan laikin----" Khanak began.

Khushboo hit her hand on her head making Khanak stop. "You've denied it to Shaan for more than a month?! How is that even possible?! You DO know what men do when they don't get what they want from their wives, don't you?!!" she asked looking at Khanak seriously.

"What?" Khanak asked confused.

"They have affairs!" Khushboo said promptly making Khanak clap her hand on her mouth.

Note: Guys I researched a bit on Hindu rituals and I found out that if hindu babies pass away you bury them rather than cremation. Shanak's baby was a full form so they buried him like that. Please correct me if I am wrong about anything here :)
