chapter 17:-

Shaan looked at Khanak. She had finally fallen asleep. Actually cried herself to sleep would be more accurate. After the initial shock had worn off, Khanak called Ishaan back. He had told her that Aria was in stable condition and she would be kept in the hospital for a few days. She'll be okay Ishaan had told Khanak. When she asked why Aria would have done something like this. Ishaan had no answer for her. Khanak hung up telling him she was coming home and will call him back with flight details.

The drive home had been quiet. Silent tears rolled down Khanak's face as she stared mindlessly out the window. Shaan hated that she was going through this. It broke his heart to see her in so much pain. Pulling into the driveway Shaan went to the passenger side to open her door. Khanak didn't move. "Khanak, we're home," he said softly. Khanak looked at him with vacant eyes. "Huh, oh okay" she said getting out of the car. Shaan slipped his arm around her and walked inside with her. "Shaan, can you book the next available flight for me to Vancouver." she asked. He nodded. "I'll call Rashi, she can help you get ready for bed". "No, No I'll be fine." she said in a distracted voice. Khanak stood at the bottom of the steps looking lost when suddenly she remembered Kabir. "I have to call Kabir." "He must be out of his mind with worry, and he'll know why she would have done something crazy like this." Khanak dialed his number but it was off. He must be at the hospital she thought. She slowly climbed the stairs to her room leaving a worried Shaan behind.

Shaan booked a flight for Khanak for the following morning. When he went to tell her he found her sitting on her bedroom floor still wearing her lengha. Her wedding magazines in her lap. She was sobbing as she ripped each one apart. Shaan rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her. "Why would she do this Shaan?" she continued to sob. "She was so happy, why would she try to take her own life." Khanak pushed away from him and stood up, her eyes full of guilt. "We speak multiple times a day and I didn't even notice something was wrong." "How did I not catch it?" "I've been too busy worrying about what's happening in my own life that I didn't even see that my best friend was hurting so much, that she thought the only way to make things better was to end her own life."

"Khanak, stop that" Shaan said grabbing Khanak's am. "You've been an amazing friend to Aria." "She knows you're always there for her. Right now is not the time to second guess yourself." "Please Khanak. no more tears. If you're a mess then how will you be able to take care of Aria when you get there." "She needs you to be strong for her right now." Khanak looked at Shaan with tears in her eyes and put her arms around him pressing her face into his chest. Shaan held her tightly. When she finally pulled away he wiped her tears from her face and kissed her forehead. "She's alive Khanak, concentrate on that." he said softly. Khanak nodded. "I just thank god she's got Kabir. He's her rock. Him and I and her family will help her get through this." Shaan nodded and grabbed Khanak's pajamas for her, holding them out for her. She took them and walked into the bathroom.

Shaan went and changed himself and when he got back to Khanak's room he saw that she was on the phone. " Kabir, it's Khanak." "I know you must be going through hell right now but can you please call me back." "If you're with Aria, can you please tell her I love her. Khanak said as her voice cracked and I'll be there very very soon." Khanak hung up and looked at Shaan. "Kabir's phone is still off so I left him a message." "Okay, your flight is early tomorrow morning, so you tell me what to pack and I'll do it." Khanak told him what she needed and Shaan organized it along with her passport and other travel documents.

Then Shaan led her to her bed and climbed in with her putting his arm around her holding her tight. "I love you Khanak," he said kissing her forehead and don't worry everything will be fine. Khanak nodded, looking at him and said "I love you too Shaan."

Sleep eluded them both for a long time. For Khanak, memories of her and Aria growing up together seemed to haunt her and bring instant tears. But Shaan was there to comfort her and wipe away her tears.

"I'll miss you," Shaan said as he pulled Khanak into a tight embrace and gave her a soft kiss. "Call me when you get there so I know you've arrived safely." "If you need anything you know I'm here." Be my strong Khanak, and please take care of yourself and...Shaan stopped seeing the tears in Khanak's eyes. "I love you," she said holding him tighter. "I love you too baby." Shaan replied squeezing her tight. Khanak pulled away and mouthed bye before walking away to the security check. She turned back one last time and waved before she disappeared from his sight.

Ishaan was waiting for her at Vancouver Arrivals. Seeing her big brother after so long under such circumstances brought a flood of tears. Her brother wrapped his arms around her in a protective embrace and said softly "it's going to be alright." "She's going to be fine." Khanak prayed he was right. They went straight to the hospital and as Khanak approached Aria's room she became more and more anxious. What could have made Aria take a step like this.

Khanak opened the door and saw Aria, she was staring off into space. Silent tears falling down her face. She hadn't noticed Khanak yet. Seeing her lively and beautiful best friend look pale and sick, a shadow of who she was, broke Khanak's heart. "Aria," Khanak called softly as she approached the bed. Aria looked over at her, with vacant eyes almost as if she didn't recognize her. Then Aria's face crumpled and she threw her arms around Khanak. Khanak held her tight. Both girls sobbing in eachother's arms. They stayed that way for a long time. After the tears had finally stopped flowing Khanak had laid in the bed next to Aria, not saying anything just holding her. And then Aria finally started talking and her words shook Khanak to the core.

"Kabir is having an affair." she said. Khanak couldn't speak, but the shock on her face spoke volumes. "Yeah," Aria said with a humorless laugh. "Guess who with?" "His assistant!." "How clichd is that?" she asked choking on her words. "Ofcourse I was never to find out because as he told me I'm the one he really loves." "I'm the one he's going to marry." "Khanak, how could he have done this to me." Aria said breaking into sobs again. "I've given him 7 years of my life." "Loved him so much, supported him through everything and this is what he thought of that love." "That's how much respect he had for my love...our love." Khanak wrapped her arms around Aria and tried to comfort her.

"I might never have known if I hadn't stopped by his house to drop off his dry cleaning." "He was supposed to be at some business dinner so I used my key to get in." "I found them together in our freakin bed!" Aria gave a mirthless laugh. "I bought that bed for us to sleep in after we were married, and he had that s**t in it." "Listening to his sorry excuses, and the wedding being 2 weeks away I didn't know what to do." "The pain was just so unbearable I just wanted to be numb, not feel any more pain/." "So without thinking of the consequences I took a couple of pills, and then a few more until i had taken the whole bottle." Khanak's face was wet with tears, all she could do was hold Aria and let her get everything out. "Khanak, how do I erase all the memories." "How do I forget all the dreams I dreamed, all the plans we made." "How can I ever start over?" "Laying in this bed I almost wish that they hadn't saved me because now I need to figure out how I'm going to live, how I'm going to go on without him." "I don't know if I have the strength." Aria said tonelessly.

"Aria, I know right now it seems like you will never move on from this." "But you will, when you find yourself feeling weak, I'll be there because I'll be your strength." "We will get through this together. I know it's going to be a long road but please, please, promise me." Khanak said choking up. "Please promise me you will never do something like this again." "You are loved by so many people and if anything happens to you it will destroy them." "That bas***d isn't worth your tears and one day you will be at a place where you will realize that." "Just please Aria, please trust me on that." Aria nodded tearfully and Khanak stayed with her until she fell asleep. She tucked her in and stared down at her "big sister" going through the most painful time in her life because of a man. A man that was supposed to love her more then anyone in the world. Aria couldn't believe how that dirty bas***d had deceived everyone. He would pay for what he'd done, she would make sure of it.

Closing the door gently behind her, she was surprised to find her brother still there. "How is she?" he asked. "She's as good as can be expected. She's asleep now." "I was thinking of going home and changing and then coming back in a bit." "I don't see aunty and uncle," she said looking around. "They haven't left the hospital in days so I convinced them to go home and get alittle bit of rest, and that I would stay with Aria until they got back. " "Take my car. "he said handing her the keys. Khanak agreed and said she's be back soon.

On the drive home she couldn't stop thinking about what Aria had told her. Rage consumed her, she wanted to physically hurt Kabir. She wanted him to hurt like Aria did, like Aria's family and friends did. How could she have been so wrong? He always said he loved Aria and would take care of her. But look where that love had landed Aria. You can't trust anyone with something as important as your heart Khanak thought to herself.

Khanak's dad wrapped her in a big bear hug and held her tight. "She'll be okay Khanak. Have faith in god, he will make everything right." her dad said kissing her forehead. Khanak wiped her tears and hugged him back and then turned towards her mother who tearfully hugged her close. She hadn't realized just how much she'd missed her parents until right now. The love of a parent is the only real unconditional love she thought to herself.

"Beta, Shaan called earlier maybe you should give him a ring." her dad said "I'll call him later." "I need a shower and then I need to get a few things together before I go back to Aria." "Okay but dinner is ready, I want you to eat something first" her mom said., Khanak nodded as she left for her room.

Her room was exactly as she left it a year ago. Everything was the same, except her. She took a quick shower and headed back to the hospital sending Shaan a quick text that she'd call him later.

The next few days flew. Khanak spent most of her time at the hospital coming home only to shower and change and sometimes grab a bite to eat. Aria was slowly healing physically, emotionally Khanak didn't know if she'd ever be better. Shaan had called numerous times but she hadn't returned his calls. She had texted him twice more telling him that Aria was doing better and that's she'd call him soon. By now, everyone knew what had happened with Kabir and ofcourse there was going to be no wedding. Aria was going home in the morning and Kabir had not shown his face once. That was some love he felt for her Khanak thought to herself.

Khanak had just dropped Aria off at her home and was going out to pick up some necessities when she saw her phone vibrating. A picture of Shaan flashing on the display. She stared at it a moment and then finally picked it up. Taking a deep breath she said "hello." " Where the hell have you been?" Shaan said angrily into the phone. "I've been busy." she snapped and besides that I sent you a few texts. "Oh yes, your 2 lined texts. They were just great." he said sarcastically "I've been worried sick about you." "Why, I'm not a baby I can take care of myself." Khanak snapped again. "What's wrong with you Khanak?" Shaan asked softly. "You're not yourself." "Well my best friend did try to kill herself, but sorry I'm not behaving the way you would like for me too." "That's not what I mean, Khanak." Shaan said in a deceptively calm voice. "Listen, I don't want to fight." "How's Aria." "She's better. She's home now." she answered. "So Kabir was the cause of all this, the reason she tried to commit suicide? he asked. "Yup the lieing, cheating bas***d." Khanak said tonelessly. "But Aria has her family and friends with her, she'll get over that loser in no time." "Okay," Shaan said hesitantly. "How's work?" she asked. "Busy as usual, it's not the same in the office without you." "Hmm," was all he heard from Khanak. "Okay I better get going." Khanak quickly said. "Okay, I love you." he said but she had already hung up.

Shaan stared at the phone in his hand. Something was very wrong. Khanak was a lot of things, passionate, loud, a free spirit. Cold she was not. But in this conversation she had been ice cold. What was going on in her head he thought.

"Dad, I wanted to talk to you about something." Khanak said approaching her dad one evening. " I was going through some of our paper work and I noticed that the contract we have with Kabir's company, B&B contracting is ending this month." "Yes I know. Aria was the reason I had signed with him. "Well, now Aria can be the reason that we don't sign with him again." Khanak said without emotion. "I don't want our business to have anything to do with him. " "We have access to a lot of contracting companies, so it won't be a loss to us." "But to him, he doesn't have access to companies like Ahluwalia construction." "Khanak, don't worry we won't re sign with him." "But, you do know that this will be a huge loss to his business." "Yes dad," Khanak said giving him her first genuine smile in weeks. "I know."

Khanak had been home for 2 weeks now and hadn't spoken to Shaan since the first phone call. She had texted a few times though. "How's Shaan?" Aria asked one day. "Fine." "He must be missing you." "You should go back now." Aria said. "I'm fine now." Looking at Aria you would think she was back to her old self. But Khanak knew better. Aria's eyes were no longer bright with love and happiness. They were lifeless and vacant. No matter what Aria said, Khanak knew better. "I'm in no rush to get back." "Well I'm in a rush for you to go back." Ari said smiling. "You have your project there and more importantly Shaan is there." "He's fine Ari." "No, you should go back now, you can't stay here forever trying to protect me." Khanak paused, staring at Aria. "Well, why don't you come with me" she said excitedly. "We'll have so much fun." "No, I'm fine here and don't worry I have plenty of people to take care of me here." "Ishaan calls or comes by every day to see how I'm doing. I have my parents and all of other crazy friends." "I'll be fine." Khanak hesitantly agreed and later on that day booked a flight back for the following evening.

Shaan sat on his office looking out the window at the city below. Not really seeing anything because he was lost in his own thoughts/ Khanak had been gone for 2 weeks and other then 1 phone conversation and a handful of text messages he had heard nothing from her. Something was wrong but the problem was he had no idea what. She had distanced herself from him and worse he didn't even know when she was coming home. He missed her like crazy. Her chatter, her smiles, her laugh, her gussa, her kisses, her expressive eyes that were usually full of mischief or passion. He missed spending time with her, talking to her, even fighting with her. His house was just a house without her. She made it a home. "Khanak come home" he thought as he tried to shift his attention back to his work.

The flight back to Mumbai was long. She'd be seeing Shaan after 2 weeks and she didn't know how she felt about that. She didn't know how she felt about anything anymore. She wasn't the same Khanak that left Mumbai 2 weeks ago. She almost felt like she's lost her innocence. The rose colored glasses she walked around wearing, were gone. She would never make the mistake of trusting someone so easily again.

She didn't let him know she was back, instead she took a cab to the house. Rashi was thankfully the only one home. After speaking to her for a few minutes Khanak excused herself saying she was tired. She took a long hot shower and went to bed, refusing dinner. Sleep mercifully came easily. Shaan hadn't arrived back from work yet.

It was late. He'd been putting in a lot of late nights lately. Trying to keep himself busy, his mind occupied. He passed Khanak's room and saw that the door was closed. He walked past it and into his own room.

The next morning, Shaan was late for breakfast. Rashi was almost done when she saw her brother approaching the table. "Another late night at work?" she asked. Shaan nodded. "You 2 love birds were probably up half the night catching up." "Now you can smile again, instead of moping around here like you've been since Khanak left." Shaan gave her a confused look. "What are you talking about?" he asked. "You and Khanak." "Khanak?" he asked slowly. "Khanak's home?" "Yes, you didn't know?" Shaan was already half way up the stairs when he heard Rashi said. "She's gone. She left a note saying she was going to the office early. "

Shaan could not believe she was back. He drove like a mad man and as he took the elevator up to his floor, he thought finally, things would be back to normal. He didn't allow himself to think about the fact that she came home yesterday and never let him know.

Khanak sat at her desk with a file open infront of her. She'd read the same page 4 times. She felt restless as she got up and moved to look outside her office window. It was still quiet in the office. Staff probably wouldn't arrive for another 45 minutes. This was the time to get stuff done. But she couldn't concentrate.

She heard her office door open behind her, and knew who is was without looking. Shaan she thought closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. She felt his hands on her shoulders turning her around to face him. She looked up and met his eyes. He looked down into her eyes and gave her a slow smile, and then he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tight, lifting her off the ground. "I missed you so much." he said in his deep sexy voice.. Khanak had tried not to think about that voice and for a minute she let herself melt into his embrace. That familiar embrace that she used to feel loved and protected in. Finally she willed herself to pull away and take a step back. "How have you been Shaan?" she asked.

Shaan looked at Khanak, she was different. Physically she'd lost weight that she hadn't needed to lose, but that wasn't it... it was her eyes. There was no spark in them, no happiness at seeing him. Her body language..she was so rigid. His usually affectionate Khanak, might as well be wearing a don't come near me sign around her neck. "You didn't tell me you were coming back. I would have picked you up from the airport." he said. "I booked my flight last minute so I didn't want to trouble anyone." "Besides, getting a cab at the airport is easy enough." she answered. "That's besides the point. I would have come pick you up no matter when you called." "Well, it's done now." Khanak snapped walking to her desk. "How's Aria?" he asked "She's better. She's getting stronger every day. I tried to convince her to come with me and stay for the next 6 weeks that I'm here but she said no."

"Six weeks that you're here?" Shaan questioned? "What do you mean?" "Well, the project seems like it's on schedule. Actually looking though the progress reports I think we're ahead of schedule." "So after that I'll be going back home." she said not meeting his eyes. "Home? I thought this was your home Khanak?" "Aren't you happy in Mumbai?" "I love Mumbai, but after the project is finished I need to go home and join my family business." "It's not like I can live in your house forever." Shaan had heard enough. He took two steps, reached her and grabbed her elbow pulling her roughly towards him. "What About us?" he asked in deceptively soft voice. "Shaan, let go of me." "Why must you always act like a cave man." "I repeat he said in a voice rising with anger WHAT ABOUT US?" "There is no us anymore." she said her eyes flashing. "We've barely known eachother for 5 months." "That's not enough time to actually know a person." Shaan was beyond his breaking point and her last sentence took him over the edge. He pushed her against the wall and softly said "tell me what you don't know about me and what I don't know about you?" "What important thing have we not learned about eachother in the last 5 months." "Shaan, stop it ." Khanak said pushing him away. "5 months is nothing." "Aria and that loser were together for 7 years and it turns out Aria never knew him." "We haven't even been together for 7 months." "Khanak, don't you dare compare me to that bas***d Kabir. "I am not a SOB like he is." "For you to even put us in the same sentence is an insult to me."

Khanak stared at Shaan. her lips drawn into a thin line. " You can say whatever you want Shaan but this is the end of the road for us." It's been fun, but let's cut our losses and finish this now before one of us hurts the other." Or in this case Shaan hurts me Khanak thought to herself. "Too late Khanak," Shaan said. "One of us has already been hurt." "I just can't believe you're idiotic logic. Don't fall in love because one day you might get hurt from it." "That's like saying don't ever drive because you might get into a car accident." Life shouldn't be lived with fear." "The Khanak I fell in love was fearless. A free spirit." "This Khanak , I barely recognize." "Good" Khanak said struggling against him, "because that naive Khanak is gone." "Now let me go." she said hitting him. Shaan pulled her closer and brought his lips down on hard on hers.. Khanak struggled against him but he only held her tighter and applied more pressure until she opened her mouth for him. Hearing her tiny moan Shaan decreased the pressure and kissed her deeper still. He didn't stop until he felt Khanak's tears on his face. He pulled away and shoved his fingers through his hair. "You are making the biggest mistake of our lives Khanak." he said in a soft broken voice. "But Shaan Singhania doesn't beg." "You've already made your decision so now you can listen to mine."

"You're going to regret this decision. And you're going to regret it quickly." "But I'm not going to take you back." "If you end this now, then it's forever. No turning back." "I walk out this door and I'll be walking out forever because I don't play games and I certainly don't play with anyones emotions."

Khanak stared at Shaan and willed herself to go to him, but she couldn't. She couldn't risk her heart like that. She never wanted to go through what Aria did. Shaan gave her one last look and stalked out of the office slamming the door behind him.

Khanak slumped to the ground and let the tears fall. It's better to cry now for a short time she told herself then for a lifetime later.

Okay so before you guys start yelling at me...yes I separated them but sometimes you need to lose someone to know their true value in your life. Khanak is growing as a person. I think everyone knows that Shaan is definitely the more mature one in the relationship but Khanak is changing and maturing now and will hopefully soon learn the true value of Shaan's love. (I hope) As always thank you so much for following my FF.

chapter 17 - enjoy -tia--

Shaan walked back into his office and slammed the door behind him. He was so angry he couldn't think straight. Of all the stupid harebrained thinks Khanak had said and done this one took the cake. How dare she make such a major decision about their lives. No discussion, nothing. Just like that, it's over. Then she has the nerve to compare him with Kabir. If he ever met this Kabir he was going to kick his cheating lying ass. He's been moping around waiting for her and she'd been planning to break up with him. Enough was enough, no more of these games. If Khanak can so easily forget about everything they had together then so could he.

Khanak splashed water on her face and then stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. You're doing the right thing she said to herself. Repeating it over again as it repeating it would actually make it true. He's not good for you. He could hurt you. You don't really know him she said to herself. But the little voice in her head kept getting louder and louder saying Shaan would die before he hurt her. Khanak angrily walked out of the bathroom. Her decision was made. It was done now. Walking into her office she avoided looking at Shaan's closed door. The next 6 weeks were going to be very long and difficult. Seeing him at home and at the office everyday was going to tear her apart. But she would be strong and then she'll be back home and then she'll forget all about Shaan Singhania. Just thinking that filled Khanak's eyes with tears. If there's one thing she could be honest atleast to herself about, it was that she wouldn't ever forget Shaan. You didn't forget your first love. But as she wiped her tears she told herself she would get through this and the best way was to throw herself into her work.

Shaan had a similar plan. The next two days he was the first in the office and the last to leave. When he finally did get home Khanak would already be in her room, asleep he presumed. He didn't want to see her. Khanak for her part, spent most of her time on site at the hotel. That was the one thing that was going well in her life. There was a night and day difference in the look of the hotel and walking through it, she felt pride at what they had accomplished.

Training was already in progress for the staff she's hired for the hotel. She wanted top of the line customer service and was willing to pay above market wages to get the best people. At the end of the day Khanak would fall into bed exhausted, but no matter how exhausted she was, thoughts of Shaan would plague her. Thoughts that would make any chances of sleep disappear and make her heart ache for him. Silent tears would slowly soak her pillow as she laid in the dark thinking of him.

Shaan looked up from his desk and saw Khanak for the first time since they're fight and break up. She was talking to his assistant. and she looked beautiful. Some of his anger had dulled replacing it with pain. Pain everytime he thought of her. Which was too often. He stared at her, taking in her long hair which she wore open hanging down her back. He took in her grey knew length pencil skirt that showed off her long toned legs and her sexy little shear sleeveless blue blouse. Then he saw her smile at his assistant and he felt that familiar tug at his heart. She had the most beautiful smile he thought ruefully. Then he caught himself. What the hell was he doing he thought angrily. He forced himself to look away and get back to his work.

Khanak spent the day in the office attending various meetings. She had plans to go to her kathak class tonight. She was hoping that would tire her enough for her to finally sleep tonight. As far as she could tell Shaan had already left for the day. Thank god she wouldn't have to run into him. Walking to the elevator she quickly sent Aria a text checking in on her. As she looked up her heart stopped. The elevator stood open with Shaan inside, looking right at her, while his assistant stood next to him.

Khanak slowed her steps willing the elevator to close. "Khanak maam," his assistant Lily called as she held the door open for her. "Damn!" Khanak thought as she forced herself to walk into the elevator. Giving Lily a nervous smile and a thank you. She avoided looking at Shaan. Thank god Lily was atleast in here with them. Lily looked from Shaan to Khanak and back again. Something was up here. Usually sir couldn't keep his eyes or hands off of Khanak maam. Even though they thought the staff didn't know, everyone knew that they had a thing for eachother. But today he seemed more interested in the elevator panel infront of him and Khanak maam couldn't stop staring at her heals.

The elevator buzzed on the 6th Floor. Khanak looked up. "Bye sir, maam I need to drop something off at Accounts Payable. I'll see you tomorrow." With that Lily was gone. Khanak's heart rate was quickly accelerating. She watched the door close infront of her and then suddenly the elevator lurched and the lights flickered..and Khanak felt herself being thrown. Shaan caught Khanak as she crashed against him. She was so close he could feel her heart beat. He could smell that flowery scent that he knew wasn't any perfume it was all Khanak. Khanak looked at Shaan, into his beautiful eyes and was lost. When the elevator gave another lurch she pressed even closer to him.

Coming to her senses Khanak quickly pulled away. "What was that?" she asked in a panic. "The elevator stopped." Shaan replied back. "What?" "How can that be?" Khanak asked starting to really panic. She started hitting the different floors on the elevator panel willing the elevator to start moving. "Will you stop that!" Shaan said pushing her hands away from the panel. He hit the security button and let security know they were stuck on the 6th floor and to call for help. Khanak backed herself into a corner of the elevator.

This would only happen to her she thought. Shaan looked at Khanak. She looked like she was well on her way to a panic attack. He rolled his eyes and turned away from her. Khanak stared at him, did Shaan just roll his eyes at her she thought angrilly. This was just bloody great Shaan thought to himself. The day already had not been a good one and being trapped in an elevator with Khanak was the icing on the cake. A few days ago Shaan would not have wasted an opportunity to be stuck in an elevator with Khanak. He would have taken full advantage of the situation. But everything was different now. They stood in silence for a couple of minutes. Khanak still in her corner finally broke the silence. "Where are they, shouldn't they be here by now?" Shaan looked at her and said snidely "Unless they're superheroes I don't think they can get to us in 2 minutes." Khanak glared at him. "It's been longer then 2 minutes." she snapped. "Oh sorry 3 minutes." Shaan snapped back.

"I don't care! Move over let me talk to them." Khanak said. Shaan threw up his hands and moved away. She hit the security button and asked what was happening. Security was still trying to get in contact with the elevator company. "What?" At this rate she would be in here all night with Shaan. No, that would not do. "Can't you call the fire department?" she asked security. The guy actually had the nerve to laugh. "Why? it's not like there's a fire" he said still chuckling. He reassured her that someone would be there soon.

She sneaked a look at Shaan who had a smirk on his face. She turned away from him and grabbed her phone. No service! Just great. "Khanak why don't you calm down." he said. "You freaking out this way isn't helping the situation." Khanak gave him yet another glare. Shaan rolled his eyes yet again. "Can you please stop that." she snapped. "What?" "Rolling your eyes at me, it's so irritating." "I'll stop that when you stop glaring at me. That's so irritating." Khanak glared back at him and Shaan rolled his eyes back at her. Khanak looked away, he was so irritating. She was glad she had broken up with him.

Security called back finally to tell them the elevator company was coming but since they were across town and it was rush hour, it would probably be atleast 2 hours before they got to them. "Two hours!" Khanak yelled. "Not acceptable!" she snapped. Shaan cut her off and thanked security. Khanak glared at him, 2 mins, 3 mins, 4 mins went by. It is so hot in here Khanak thought opening the top 2 buttons of her blouse. Shaan whistled some tune behind her. Looking at him, he looked perfectly fine. Actually a little too fine she thought as she bit her bottom lip. He'd taken his suit jacket off and his blue pinstriped shirt stretched over his powerful arms which were folded across his chest. She remembered the feel of those arms around her and it sent a little shiver up her spine. She quickly looked away.

Shaan watched Khanak take off her short jacket and lift her hair off the back of her neck. Waving her hand infront of her face. Shaan's mouth went dry. She looked unbelievably sexy. Khanak glanced at Shaan and saw him staring at her. "What?" she asked. "Nothing, you can continue to strip it has no effect on me." "STRIP?!" Khanak yelled. "I'm not stripping for you Shaan." "If you haven't noticed it's freakin hot in here." "Really? I'm fine." he said nonchalantly. "Yeah I'm sure you are." Khanak replied as she saw a bead of sweat roll down his neck. She looked away remembering how many times she's kissed that neck.

"It must be killing you to be stuck in here with me Shaan" suddenly said sarcastically. Khanak ignored him. "No, seriously since you've figured me out in your little head, you already know that I'm going to hurt you." "Infact in your eyes I'm just like that loser Kabir." "Shaan, I don't want to talk about this anymore." "Why not? Whatelse do we have to do in here, other then stare at eachother's faces, and I don't particularly like your face." he snapped. "LIAR" the little voice in his head said quickly.

"Then don't look at my face if you don't like it." Khanak yelled. "I don't want to see your face either." "As for breaking up, one day you'll thank me, once you realize we weren't right for eachother." "Why one day? I'm going to thank you right now." he snapped. "Through this I've learned that you don't want a real man you want a little boy who is going to let you walk over him, who you can control, who you won't love, who in your mind you will be safe with." "I've also learned what a selfish brat you are." "You only thought about your feelings, what you want." "How this will effect you." "Me, I wasn't even considered. So I'm glad we're not together cause I don't want someone like you." he said.

Khanak stared at him with her mouth open. She didn't have a response. He folded his arms across his chest and glared at her. Khanak looked away. She hadn't just been thinking about herself...or had she. A few minutes went by and Khanak saw that Shaan had started unbuttoning his shirt . "What are you doing?" she asked. "It's hot in here so I'm getting comfortable." "By taking your shirt off?" she pratcially screached. She could not handle a half naked Shaan right now. Her nerves were too raw. "No, I'm just unbuttoning it." "Not that it's any of your business." "And don't act like you've never seen my naked chest before." he snapped. Khanak looked away, ignoring his last comment.

Shaan looked at Khanak, she had taken off her heals and made a fan out of a peice of paper waving it infront of her face. She was flushed and beautfiul. As usual her expressive eyes were telling a story. She had a determined glint in them and then suddenly she started taking off her shirt. "What the hell are you doing?" Shaan asked. Pushing himself away from the elevator wall. "I am about to pass out from this heat." "It's too hot." she said as she slipped the shirt off leaving a tight short camisole that hugged her body. She looked at him and lifted her hair off the back of her neck again.

She's trying to drive me crazy he thought angrily. There is no way she doesn't know how sexy she looks right now. She's doing this on purpose. Khanak gave him a "I dare you to comment look." He slowly looked her up and down. Khanak felt tingly all over as his eyes caressed her body. Then he shrugged and said "nothing I haven't already seen." Khanak's face turned bright red. "How dare you! You are such a loser." she said taking a step towards him and poking him in the chest.

Shaan grabbed her hand. "What Khanak? Don't you remember all the fun times we spent together?" "There was a time when we would have made the most of being stuck in an elevator together." Shaan brought his mouth close to Khanak's ear. "Two hours would have flown with just the two of us alone in aconfined space." Khanak closed her eyes. His closeness was driving her crazy. Shaan slipped his other hand around Khanak's hip and pulled her close. His lips just inches from hers. She could feel his breath on her lips. "There was a time that I would have kissed these lips until they were bruised and you would have been begging me for more." Khanak bit her bottom lip and as Shaan moved even closer she felt her eyes close waiting to feel his lips on her. But all she felt was Shaan abruptly letting her go. "But now I feel nothing." he said giving her a cold look.

Khanak felt like she had been slapped. She just stared at him and finally she whispered "Shaan please let's not do this, let's not hurt eachother even more." "We work and live together. Life will get pretty unbearable if we keep fighting this way." "Wouldn't it be better if we just tried to be friends?" she asked pleadingly. Shaan stared at her and then two steps and cornered her against the wall. "I don't want to be your friend." he said harshly staring into her eyes. Khanak's face fell. "Shaan, why are you making this so hard for us?" "Hard?" Shaan said with a harsh laugh. "I'm sorry Khanak that I'm not making breaking my heart easy for you." "I'm sorry I can't just laugh and turn my emotions on and off like you can."

"You ruin a perfectly good relationship on a whim." "Something completely unrelated happens and you make it about yourself." "Selfish little Khanak" he snapped. Khanak's eyes filled with tears. "Don't you dare cry Khanak, don't you dare!" he said in a rough voice. "You did this to us, so you have no right to cry over something you destroyed." Khanak stared at Shaan and saw the anger in his eyes. Shaan finally pulled away from her and turned away. Khanak closed her eyes and tried to stop the tears. Stop it, stop it she told herself. His words just hurt so much but they also spoke volumes about his own pain.

They stood in silence for a long time. Khanak was starting to feel light headed now. It felt like a sauna in the elevator. Security had called and said the elevator maintenance were on route. Shaan watched Khanak as she paced in the tiny elevator, she didn't look good. "Drink this." he said handing her his water bottle. She's already finished her own. Khanak took the bottle and had a long drink. As she handed the bottle back to Shaan she felt herself get dizzy. Shaan caught her just as she was about to fall.

"Sorry." she said trying to push away from him, but feeling herself get dizzy again. "Stop it," Shaan said as he helped her sit down against one of the elevator walls. "Here drink some more water" he ordered. Khanak took another drink. "I didn't have time for lunch today." she said as she closed her eyes and leaned against the wall. "Well that was smart." Shaan remarked sarcastically. Khanak ignored him. "The lack of food and heat is making me so light headed." Shaan looked in his bag. "All I have is a chocolate bar," he said as he handed it too her and ordered her to eat. Khanak thanked him.

"Are you feeling better now?" he asked. "Yes," she nodded "sitting helped." "Good Shaan" said about to stand up. "Can't you please sit?" she asked. "Looking up at you is going to make me dizzy." Shaan paused and then sat down next to her. They stayed quiet until Khanak spoke in a soft voice. "I'm sorry for hurting you Shaan." Shaan didn't respond. They sat side by side for a long time, and then Shaan felt Khanak's head land on his shoulder. He looked over and she was asleep. Only Khanak could go to sleep at a time like this this he thought. What he didn't know was that since their breakup this was the first time she had gotten any sleep. Thoughts of Shaan had stolen her sleep and having him with her had finally restored it. Shaan stared down at her and asked Khanak softly "why are you doing this Khanak?" Then he brushed her hair from her face and let her sleep.

Elevator maintance got them out about an hour later. Shaan nudged Khanak awake and as she was waking up, he got up and grabbed his jacket. Walking out of the elevator without a backwards glance. Khanak looked after him, her heart aching.

At home they saw eachother that night but did not speak. What was there left to talk about? Khanak took a long shower and thought about what Shaan had said. "Did she make a mistake?" she thought miserably.

The next day Shaan as usual left for the office early Khanak came down for breakfast and as she drank her coffee her phone rang. Her project manager had some questions for her and forms that needed both her and Shaan's signatures. She was faxing them to Khanak so her and Shaan could go over them together. Khanak hung up and thought about seeing Shaan again after yesterday. It'll be fine she told herself. This won't be the first time we'll need to discuss business. It's an office atmosphere and we're both adults. It'll be fine.

"Megha, I'm fine with these plans if Khanak is okay with them." Shaan was saying as he heard a knock on his office door. "Come in." he called. Khanak walked in and saw Shaan and Megha standing next to eachother with their heads close together leaning over what looked to be some plans. Their hands were side by side almost touching. Shaan looked up and his eyes instantly grew cold. "Yes Khanak?" he asked. "I needed to go over some things with you regarding the hotel." "What things?" "Just final plans and I need you to sign some documents. " "Fine, let's have a look." Shaan said. Khanak looked at Megha. "Oh, I'll leave you two. I can wait outside." Megha said to shaan. "No Megha," Shaan said looking at Khanak. "You stay, this won't take long." Khanak forced the tears back. Please god don't let me cry infront of them she begged. She managed to speak without her voice cracking. Shaan looked over the documents and signed them and then he turned back to Megha. Just like that Khanak had been dismissed. She forced herself to walk, not run back to her office. She shut the door and then let the tears finally come.

You wanted this Khanak she kept saying to herself, then why are you crying. Because she had never imagined it would be this painful to be hated by Shaan. She'd only ever felt his love. She didn't know if you could live with his hate.
