'Aati hoon! Tum jao and tell mummy ke mein aa rahi hoon! 10 minutes mein!'

As Khanak slowly descended the stairs, she saw the living room was filled with women. Her mom and chachi were serving cold drinks to the guests. Anvesha was seated between Shantam's youngest aunt and her two daughters, listening with a blank face to their chatter.

'Yeh to sach mein poore khandaan ko hi bulaa liya hai. Ab sab se individually milun kya.'

She suddenly started feeling awkward. Guilty and ashamed of arriving like a guest at the dinner.

'Jaldi uth jana chahiye tha yaar.' She said to herself.

'Hello aunty.' She went forward and greeted Shaan's mom, who in turn kissed her cheek lightly and inquired about her exam, then added jokingly, 'Humein laga ke aaj tumse mulaqat nahi hogi.'

Khanak knew that she meant it in good humor but couldn't help feeling a bit embarrassed. Before she could come up with an answer, her mother spoke up;

'Woh iska paper tha na aaj. Tou thak gayi thi. Aate hee so gayi. Poori raat tou padhti hai isliye.' Though not before giving her daughter a small glare.

Khanak quickly said a collective namaste to all the rest of the ladies seated there and turned to Shaan's mom again.

'Aunty, Shantam aaye hein?' kahan hein? aur uncle?

'Haan beta woh drawing room mein betha hai.'

'Oh acha.Mein unn se mil ker aati hoon!'

She entered the room filled with gents. Her father, chacoo, Shaan's dad and his uncles sat on one side of the room while the younger generation sat on the sofas opposite the door, Shantam and Kavi amongst them, busy chatting with each other. He was surrounded by a lot of his male cousins. Khanak hesitantly made her way towards him. As she neared him, Shaan looked up and saw her. His face broke into a warm smile and he got up to greet her.

'Hello!' Kanyaka smiled at Shaan.

Shaan watched her go with an amused expression whereas Sumeet watched her departure with interest.

'Okay. Seriously. You need to tell your MIL NOW to stop introducing me to random aunties from your sasural!'

'What-'

'And Bua is encouraging her, which is no surprise of course considering ke woh mujhse kitna 'pyaar' karti hein!'

'Can you please calm down for a second? Khanak, ladkiyon ka sab poochte hein. What's the big deal?'

'Big deal? Big deal yeh hai ke Shaan ki mausi apne baite ko bula kar meri taraf ishaara karke kuch keh rahi theen! Sumeet, Puneet, whatever his name is...anyways the point is...how dare she?!'

'Khanak aaram say bolo! Sun lein gi woh. Aur please mere sar mein dard hai, so stop being so hyper!'

'What is wrong with you? Sar mein dard hai. Aaj tu tumhare sar ka dard theek ho jana chahiye...Suno mulaqaat arrange karoon?!' Khanak asked mischievously.

'Koi zaroorat nahi hai!'

'aye haye! Dil mein tu laddoo phoot rahe hein liken...'

'I am serious Khanak! Please. Kaha na koi zaroorat nahi hai. It's a family dinner aur...'

'Kya hua hai yaar? Why are you so-'

'Khanak! Bache please guests ko poocho zara. Dekho sab ko cold drinks milli hein k nahi. Jao Shantam ko serve karo, poocho kuch chahiye...'

'Jee acha Chachi!' Khanak turned back to Anvesha. 'Tumhein tou mein baad mein dekhti hoon. Nakhre khatam hee nahi ho rahay madam ke!'

'Shaan Jeej. Do you need anything?'

'No thanks. I'm fine.' Shaan smiled. 'Arey Khanak! I forgot to ask, exams kaise ho rahe hein?'

'Don't ask! Bus ho rahe hein...'

'Sorry yaar! Hamari wajah se tumhein...'

'Hamaaariii?! Kya baat hai! Abhi se hamari! so sweet. Waise the other half of your hamari is close by...'

'Jee pata hai mujhe. Thank you! Waise bahut hee bekaar saali ho. Ek meeting bhi arrange nahi kerwa sakti?'

'Mein tou karwa rahi thi lekin...Patience jeej! Shaadi hai na within a week. Abhi meeting ho gayi tu saara charm khatam ho jaye ga!'

'Yeah. Whatever. Tum kisi kaam ki nahi! Dekh lena, tunhara time bhi aaye ga. Phir mujhse koi help expect mat kerna!'

Kanyaka suddenly stopped smiling. Mera time? She thought. And despite all her best efforts, Ronit Sir's shadow joined her in that crowded room. Suddenly it became hard for her to breathe.

Shaan was surprised to see her face turn pale. Suddenly it looked like she was miles away.

'Hello? Kya hua? I was just messing around with you! Itna dil pe mat lo. Relax, khoob meeting karwaon ga aap ki aur aap ke unn ki!'

Khanak faked a smile and reached for a glass of water. Her gaze fell on Shaan's shoes. Something about them struck her. Did he own a similar pair? She was quite sure he had worn them to class once.

'Umm Khanak? Are you okay?Sorry. I have a bad sense of humor!'

Khanak shook herself out of her reverie and smiled again. A soft smile. A sad smile.

'Kuch nahi Jeej! I just remembered something. Uh...I need to go get something from the kitchen. Abhi aati hoon!'

Shaan looked on puzzled as he remembered her smile. It had been so different. For some reason, it made him sad too.
