K.K Sharma'K.K Sharma (then it struck him,) Krishna Kant Sharma! Dad's rival ( Shaan remembered as he saw the portly figure stand up to speak at the Board Meeting of the charity hospital.) The person whose daughter he had danced with at his comeback party. The girl his father had wanted him to marry.

Khanak had asked Shaan to sit in at the weekly meeting, so she could introduce him to the members and that he could put forth his proposal. He had opted to stay in the back of the room, while she was rushed up front and asked to sit along with the other chair. He felt a thrill of pride to see her up there in the midst of older and much more experienced professionals who were all treating her with tremendous deference and affection at the same time. The praise and adulation was entirely deserved for she was indeed a trooper, his little firebrand. And he wanted to be at her side every step of the way.

She seemed distracted, not paying attention to what was being said, and intermittently throwing glances his way. He grinned, knowing that it was he who was the culprit. He then playfully chided her with his eyes, for once asking her to pay attention to what the builder was saying. She blushed and looked away, flustered at getting caught cheating.

KKS: So we have all the funds we need with a good amount of cushion on top as Dr. Khanak had so rightly proposed. We can start the process of bidding for the best site next week!

There was a general murmur of approval and sighs of relief as everybody in the room had been waiting for this announcement for a very long time.

Khanak stood up, I have a special announcement to make, a pleasant surprise. There is somebody here who wishes to be a part of this wonderful project and is willing to offer us his tremendous skill and expertise. She said smiling proudly at Shaan who was pleasantly surprised to hear such praise from her; he hadn't realized that she thought so highly of him.

Shantanu, please come forward. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Mr.Shantanu Khandelwal, an enormously gifted and talented architect!

Shantanu stepped forward amidst loud applause of approval, somewhat embarrassed at being the center of attention, though he was no stranger to it, it felt odd to be introduced this way by his fiance. He frowned at Khanak before acknowledging everybody present with his charming smile,

It is a great honor for me to be considered as a potential candidate for designing this hospital. Let me say at the outset, that I'm not at all like Khanak has shown me to be. I'm just a new kid on the block, trying to find a niche of his own in this huge market, he said shrugging his shoulders graciously.

I admit that I have no experience in designing or building hospitals but I'm sincere and hardworking and will leave no stone unturned to get this project completed the right way. You can depend on me for that. And I will offer my services for free! He declared with a smile.

This was met with another round of loud applause and everybody stepped forward to shake his hand and clap him on his back, while Khanak watched with ill concealed pride from the sidelines. Shaan's eyes sought hers above the crowd and were happy to find them filled with loving approval and support. We'll be together all along the way; they seemed to say and he wanted to take her in his arms right then and there.

Shantanu? Aren't you the Shantanu Khandelwal, who returned not so long ago with a lot of fanfare from abroad? The New Breed to introduce a breath of fresh air in to a stale old craft?

Shaan looked around to see Mr. KK Sharma, standing right next to him, looking up, for he was quite short in comparison. But his voice more than adequately made up for his short comings. Shaan smiled reluctantly in return for he felt wary of his father's rival especially after hearing him mentioned the other day as his potential father-in-law. Keep it business like Shaan and nothing more!

Does your father know about your plans?

No Sir, he does not. This is my personal decision and I am free to do what I want! I am my own man! Shaan was resolute.

I agree young man, but you don't know your father as well as I do, he can be quite ruthless and manipulative, when it comes to business, he doesn't spare anyone. Tum abhi tak bacche ho, jaate jaate sab samajh jaoge! Khanak beta! Apne dost ko samajhao ki yeh sab bacchon ka khel nahin hai! Kaho ki apne pita se pehle salah mashwara kar le.. Mr KKS said now looking at Khanak.

Khanak glanced apprehensively at Shaan, she had not expected such a response from the renowned builder. Was personal rivalry spoiling Shaan's chances here? She wondered if Shaan would backdown.

Shaan smiled at her reassuringly, and put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her close, Khanak does not need to persuade me, I have already made up my mind about this. I am going to go ahead whether Dad likes it or not! Besides Sir, I might as well tell you now, before you hear it from somebody else, Khanak is more than a friend, she's going to be my wife!

Khanak smiled with pleasure and pride as Shaan stood his ground, he had yet again showed that he did not make empty promises.

Mr. KKS stared at the couple, stunned at the announcement Shaan had just made, it was something very hard to believe. He had never thought of Shaan as a rebel. He had hoped for something different..

But Sunil did not mention it when I saw him yesterday!..

Shaan turned to him undeterred, He probably forgot to mention it, but it is 100% etched in stone. We are going to get married with the blessings of both our families and yours too I hope, what do you say Khanak?

Khanak could sense an undercurrent of tension between the two men, but couldn't put a finger on it's cause. She smiled at Mr. KKS and nodded in agreement.

But before he could say any more, they were interrupted by a jovial voice.

Khanak?!!! My partner! I believe you have not been very forthcoming with me lately! Who is this I see, your young man? Dr Krishnan teased loudly making Khanak blush.

Shaan relieved at the interruption, immediately took to the jolly Doctor, who seemed to be an easy going soul with kind and intelligent eyes. His affection for Khanak was quite obvious as he said,

I hope that your intentions are honorable son, for Khanak is like a daughter to me!

Fear not sir, she is more precious to me than life itself. Shaan's sincerity was clearly evident and Dr Krishnan nodded satisfied.

Oh you young people make me feel old! He then said with a melancholic expression.

Khanak laughed, No Sir, you are the one who has always been my inspiration. I don't think I can ever come close to matching your boundless energy!

You are kind Khanak, but I'm growing old and tired. I may ask you someday to take over...No don't refuse! I have tremendous trust in your abilities! Young man, you are very lucky! Just don't steal her away from us for too long!

Shaan grinned and nodded, feeling closer to Khanak than he had ever before.
