can we make this post into a sticky....???
Hmmm...Rajen...where do we begin? when do we end??
There have been several justifications given...starting with - In a 6 day format the work needs to be divided and therefore the need for new characters, I am only going to address this becos I am sure everyone shall be touching on everything else (and this and more)..
I for one am not fully convinced and in fact, I firmly believe these kind of justifications make it easier for CVs not to provide quality entertainment...let me put down why it does not ring true..
a. Before the 6 day format, this show was a content based show around shanak with one set of permanent supporting cast (the Khandelwal Family- Sunil, Mad, Boo, Akki, Daadi)...with a few characters thrown in to provide meat for a well defined story line within a track and therefore we saw brilliant cameos by actors who played Hetal, Mangal. Gopi, (gaurav ghera's 4 characters), Dharam; and if not anything the paathshaala became a character in a particular track.. I believe during a particular track (kuch khaas hai) the actors were given 50 page dialogue sheets and that scene ...most pivotal in RBO ...was spread over a week...
IMO, if the show concentrated on developing a storyline within tracks..chances are there was NEVER any need for extra permanent supporting cast..cameos would have done the TRICK very well...in this process they have not only damaged a well established format which was working both from TRP and quality perspective ... but even reduced the potential characterization of existing permanent supporting cast..
b, This whole thing of 'too much work for actors' makes me laugh..until recently RBO actors hardly gave any interviews, they never did any extra TV reality shows..both of which a huge number of TV actors indulge in ..which probably requires equal amount of hard work if not more..please do not get me wrong,,I am not saying RBO actors must do reality shows (in many ways thank god they don;t)..but the point here is one of understanding what shall finally tick....I am sorry to say but no concentration of storyline and therefore not giving existing actors more space and no further development of characters has taken away the 'hatke' from RBO.. the one reason we all prided ourselves in with respect to watching this show..
the point is what is the 'real' longetivity of a show..can a show go down in our hearts for ever...in the last decade there is not a single show that has been able to achieve that...except for maybe Sarabhai and Khichdi ..both of which concentrated on a strong core cast with cameos dropping by..a brilliant plot based superbly written storylines...each one catering to a different TRP section..but both in a genre extremely complicated to tick..
It is after all an extremely competitiive environment .. and very few shows shall reign 'fabulous' or the best of the lot.. with the whole parallel track format..introducing a new lead way after characters have been established was suicidal for the show and today have killed this show...yes they did not kill Shanak chemistry but killed shanak characters and killed RBO as a whole..
Today RBO with Rajen is like -
a patch of concrete in the center of a garden...unnecessary, damaging and hazardous to the garden and those wanting to enjoy the garden...
and while the motivations to place the patch of concrete shall forever be discussed and ranted about..it does not take an understanding of climate change for us to note the changes...the changes are there for us to see...
