PART 19 A
Saturday nite 10 PM onwards
Mangal Kunj, Malabar Hill
He stepped back and let her walk to the windows. Walked over to the sofas, sat down and said "haan?"
Hari Lal stood there "Khana ready hai"
Shaan (checking his phone) "Thanks" "Abhi 10 minute mein?"
Hari Lal: Ji!
Shaan: Let's get something to eat Khanak?
His phone rings, he answers, speaks only in English, she detects a faint accent, American (?) she wonders
She had no idea how she was going to face him now. The last 10 minutes had revealed something about her that she vowed she would take to her grave. "She was attracted to a South Bombay brat AND let him kiss her." She nervously moistened her lips, she could feel his on them. The scent of Aqua will stay with her forever.
Not one part of his body had touched her or held her. The kiss had held them together. He was everything she hated in men. She had never imagined that a man as good looking as he is would ever pay her any attention. He was not only paying her attention, he was pursuing her. She was just another notch on his belt. "How did I even end up in his rec room?" "BAD idea" Getting out of her tonite won't end it either. "Maybe if I told him I am not interested in having an affair he would back off?" "He wouldn't want anything else anyway".
Nirav is my reality. Shantanu is a fantasy. Fantasy of many many girls her age. She wud play this game often on Sunday afternoons where she would lay on the divan in the living room and try and capture the circular ray of sunshine hitting her pillow through the hole made in the window frame for cable. Just when she would think she had that ray in her palm it would be gone''''.
Shaan: Khanak'..
Khanak turns around and looks at the door. "Sorry I am ready"
She walks past him to the door he catches up with her "Now you won't even look at me anymore?" (amused)
Khanak: I am hungry.
Shaan: Good, lead the way''..
She walks out into the hallway, down the stairs he watches her drape her pallu over her left arm, and clutch the pleated folds in the front with the same hand, effortlessly, like she wore a saree everyday. With her righthand, she pushed her hair back from her face repeatedly as it bobbed and covered her face, obstructing her view''''''
His Mom wore a saree occasionally, his Bhabhi did not''' much
Khanak wore it like a pro. She reached downstairs and turned around and looked up to see where he was. The eyes meet again for the first time after the kiss. He rewards her with a smile, she acknowledges
They walk over to the table together, he pulls a chair for her, Hari Lal has already served her veggie food.
Shaan is not very hungry and so carefully watches her eat. She eats her roti with hand, which is a pleasant change considering the kind of girls he hung out with that would eat it with a fork and a knife.
Shaan: Do you like it?
Khanak: Its delicious''. Oh! Thanks (smiles at her food)
Shaan: U are welcome. (he continues to kick his food around on his plate)
Khanak: Arent you hungry?
Shaan: Not much actually
Khanak: Phir to aapko yeh khaana chahiye. I can guarantee you its better than meat (firm)
Shaan's heart skips a beat at the "aap"
Shaan: How would you know, you've never tried it have you?
Khanak: (looking up at him in a matter of fact way) No! I don't eat meat''.. at all actually. I don't know how to cook it either.
Shaan: "You don't have to know how to cook it" (giving himself away unknowingly😳😳)
Her hand freezes on her plate.
Shaan: I meant if you don't eat it why would you cook it
She doesn't look at him but begins eating again. Hari Lal walks in and picks up the paneer bowl to take it in for a refill.
Khanak: Vegetarian food is good for you. You should try some occasionally (taunts and smiles at her paneer)
Shaan: Oh! Really? (That's the first time I've heard it tone)
Khanak: Fine! Be this way
Shaan picks up his spoon and helps himself to a spoonful of paneer from her plate.
She watches it in complete shock, until it goes into his mouth.
Shaan: This is good'''.
Hari Lal walks in and offers her another roti, she agrees reluctantly
Khanak: I shudnt be eating so much. I have to go home and work. At this rate all I can do is crash. The rotis are great'''' different'' but''.
Shaan: I am a Punjabi Khanak. Thoroughbred (grins) We love our food'' esp the bread''' I mean rotis
A little voice warns her "ANOTHER reason this is never going to work Khanak! Aada will kill you, if your Bai doesn't"
Hari Lal fusses over her again, Shaan just watches amused''.. upon her insistence agrees to eat a roti and paneer.
Her phone vibrates on the table, she peeks, its an SMS from Ritu "WHERE ARE YOU?" it says
His phone rings again, it's a female voice he answers with a "Hi! Joann" gets up from the table and walks away.
She is done, walks around the living room, no sign of him
As mysteriously as he had disappeared, he reappears.
Shaan: Coffee?
Khanak: I am going to explode if I eat or drink one more thing (answers spontaneously)
Slowly but surely there was a easy camaraderie developing between the two. Neither were aware of it at this point. She was looking at a artwork display in a huge glass case''. She slowly saunters to a picture wall. Tens of pictures of Shaan and his brother, childhood, school, college pictures. She LOVES looking at pictures so she lingers until he walks up
Shaan: I was born with natural good looks don't you think?
Khanak: Of course! And not to mention the narcissistic streak (taunts playfully about him being so self obsessed)
Shaan: Obsessions change''.
Suddenly she doesn't want to know!
Khanak: I think I should go home.
Shaan: Tomorrow is a Sunday Khanak'''
Khanak: I hate working weekends, but there has not been many weekends since Casa that Ive not worked.
He stands there hands tucked in his pockets and smiles at her honesty.
Pause as both of them check the other out one last time
Shaan is the first one to step out of the catalepsy.
Khanak: I can even take a cab home actually. I am used to travelling home late by myself (gutsy)
Shaan: I'll act as if I did not hear that.
He pulls his key out and says "I am ready when ever you are"
She nods, letting go of his gaze, holds the door open, the elevator door open, the car door'''. She slides into the passenger seat. He powers the engine, they drive in silence, except for the Sirius Radio
It doesn't take more than half hour to get to her home.
She readies herself to step out
Shaan: Are you meeting him again? Whats his name? (For a man who never forgets anything, this is one thing he hasn't bothered to memorize)
Khanak is still " I don't want to............ I am not sure I have to answer that" she finishes (secretive)
That subtle cue is enough for him
Shaan: What are you doing tomorrow?
Khanak (confidently) Going out with Paula for lunch (declaration)
He smiles, but since she is not looking at his face, she doesn't see it.
Its her turn to be polite or so she wants him to believe
Khanak: Do you have plans?
Shaan: Yep! Ditto, lunch date with a friend
"Female friend" she fumes'..
She steps out, he is out as well. There is not a soul in sight despite it being a Sat nite, she checks her watch, that explains it, its past midnite!!
She walks into the dumpy lobby, he is behind her, almost as if he was being protective. The guard is nowhere in sight. He is appalled she would have done this by herself if he had not driven her home.
There is no gate to the complex and it opens into a busy street.
Khanak: I will be fine'. You should go
Shaan: I am not leaving until u unlock your door Khanak (angry)
The elevator ride is creaky but quiet as they both don't say anything to each other.
They step off, there is one bulb glowing in the musty hallway. She turns around stalling him.
Khanak: Shantanu!
Shaan: You pick the darndest of places and moments to say my name don't you? (husky)
He stands with his hands in his pockets leaning sideways on the wall by the elevator.
They just look at each other one last time yet again
Khanak: I have to go. Thank you for dinner...........it was delicious". And the ride home. I will see you at work Monday? Or when ever I come in next? (trying to sound aloof) and you enjoy your date..I mean your lunch date tomorrow?
Shaan: Soon you will have to decide if you enjoy my pursuit or you enjoy worrying about what I do when I am not pursuing you❤️.
PART 19 B Teaser'
Sunday 1:30 PM ish
Gostana, Pali Naka, Bandra
Khanak enters observing the lunch hour rush at the restaurant. She wonders if Paula is here yet. She knows Paula had booked their table. She walked up to the hostess , she was wearing a pink tee with "Creative chicks rule" inscribed on it with a picture of chicken holding easel and paintbrush, and another one playing the piano, while one sat alone in the left corner sculpting! She wore a white capri and some white and pink square bangles in her hand, the kohl was her only other "application" on her face besides her pink lip gloss.
The hostess confirms having a reservation and says the guest has arrived. She escorts Khanak to a table by the window. Khanak finds some one seated in one of the chairs. Its not Paula. Her heart begins its marathon.
Hostess: Here you go! (leaves Khanak and walks away)
Shaan: Hi! Khanak''.. and we meet again (Smiles)
He is wearing a white tee and khakhi trousers.
"OH MY GOD!" are the first words that form in her brain No!
Khanak: AAP? Where is Paula? (Affront) Tucks her hair back in agitation like she always does he observes
He is reading her tee now.
Shaan: Can't agree more Khanak (grins)😉
