Part Two

Shantanu was pacing around as the doctor checked Khanak. She had a high fever and was unconscious. He had asked his mother and Bhabhi how long ago Khanak had been upstairs. He was disheartened to think she was like this for two hours. He hoped everything would be fine.

The doctor emerged, Shantanu stopped pacing and looked at him earnestly. Sunil and Akshay had arrived in the mean time and all held their breaths.

" Khanak has very low blood pressure. Her temperature is very elevated. I want her taken to the hospital if her temperature does not drop by morning. In either case I will be sending a nurse over in the next hour to take some blood. I am sure it must be some infection," the doctor stated.

Everyone sighed. A fever could be managed, they could all keep an eye on her tonight.

Akashay offered to go pick up the medications before the pharmacy close for the day.

Shantanu sat by Khanak's side. Madvi brought in some cloths and cool water.

Shantanu took the first shift as he wanted to be there when the nurse came to take the blood. He placed a cool cloth on Khanak's forehead. He settled down beside her when the nurse arrived to take the blood. He held her other hand in his as he tried not to break down. He needed to be strong for her.

Akshay arrived after the nurse left and helped prepare the medications. Shantanu held her up as Khushboo gave Khanak the medications. Everyone participated in watching over her.

Shantanu must have dozed off for some time for when he awakened the sun was shining through the window.

He was startled to see his mother sitting on the other side of Khanak taking her temperature.

" Mom mujhe sona nahin tha. Ab Khanak kaisi lagri hai?," Shantanu inquired.

Madvi smiled as she took out the thermometer.

" The fever is down. I'll go get breakfast started. She should be up soon," Madvi assured him,

Shantanu smiled in relief.

He noticed she was stirring. He pretended to be asleep.

Khanak awakened surprised to see the sun shining through the window. She glanced at the clock and was surprised to see it was 8am.

" Yeh kaise hogaya?," she pondered.

She turned to see Shantanu asleep beside her.

She sighed.

" How could I have slept so long. Shantanu is getting late. I should wake him up," she muttered to herself.

She leaned over to wake him up.

He felt her moving closer to him and grabbed her wrist.

" Hello Mrs. Shantanu Khandlewal!"

She smiled at him.

" You were pretending again weren't you? Aaap kab aaye?"

Shantanu looked at her startled.

" Tumhe kuch yaad nahin hai?," he inquired.

She frowned.

" Kya matlab ..?"

Shanatanu shook his head and sat up.

" You scared me too much last night! We were all so worried," he exclaimed.

Khanak looked at him puzzled and then suddenly it came back to her.

" Oh right! I came up here because I was not feeling well. Then suddenly I felt cold and dizzy," she declared.

She looked back at Shantanu.

"Muhje maaf kardo. I must have really upset you," she stammered.

Shanatanu held her close and kissed her cheek.

" I am just happy you are all right. The doctor should call back with your blood test results later. However for now I want to hold you in my arms," he quipped.

She blushed and tried to get loose.

" Please Shantanu koi aayega," she hissed.

His phone rang causing them to break apart. She got up and slowly went into the bathroom.

He finished with the call. He had an important meeting later that day. He would not be able to stay home with Khanak today.

He noticed her missing and knocked her the bathroom door.

" Tum theek to ho Khanak?," he inquired.

" Haan ab main bilkul theek hoon," she called out. ( Yes I am fine)

Shanatanu started to get his things ready while Khanak freshened up.

Later they walked together to the table. Everyone inquired about her welfare and she told them she was sorry to keep them all awake during the night.

" Sorry kuch nahin. You haven't eaten since lunch yesterday. Relax and eat properly," Sunil ordered her.

Khanak smiled at her father-in-law and started to eat.

Later on while Madvi and Khushboo ordered her to sit down and watch t.v the phone rang. Khanak lowered the volume and headed over to the phone.

" Is this Mrs. Khanak Khandelwal?,"

" Jee main hoon Khanaak."

The person went on to tell her she needed to come to the clinic immediately as the doctor wanted to discuss her blood test results.
