Khanak stood in the kitchen, shaking the aloo bhaji vigorously, a thousand thoughts running through her mind about all the stuff that she had read. It wasn't as though she didn't know anything! Before she had got married to Suraj, her mother had locked her in a room to explain the subtleties of 'married' life to her, which she had, in the beginning of the conversation, been more than willing to listen. However, when her mother had entered 'dangerous territories', she had covered her ears and had in fact forced her mother out of the room, wanting to listen to no more. It was now that she had realized what a miserable thing he had done!
Shaan was watching her secretly, a mixture of a smile and a smirk on his face. Khanak did not see him enter the kitchen and slowly place his arms around her waist and rest his chin on her shoulder. Khanak cringed for just a second and tried to ignore the weird bouncing of things in her stomach. As Shaan tried to make himself comfortable, he felt irritated with the piece of cloth on Khanak's shoulder and under his chin. Lifting his chin he whispered in Khanak's ear,
" Tumko pata hain na'kay kitchen main dupatta odhna kitna dangerous hain?"
Almost immediately Khanak sought to clutch her dupatta tightly but Shaan was too quick for her! With the movement of just 2 of his fingers, and the time span of just 2 seconds, he lifted her dupatta and threw it over the refrigerator, saying, "It can catch fire!".
Khanak wanted to protest but her voice died in her throat as she noticed Shaan staring right across her heavy chest, which seemed even more heavier as Khanak breathed deeply. She quickly turned around and resumed with the shaking of her bhaji. Shaan smiled, came closer, and enveloped Khanak's waist slowly again. This time he did not even bother to rest his chin on her shoulder. He had a clear path; Slowly he placed a kiss on Khanak's collar bone and heard her gasp softly. One of Shaan's arms covered her hand and his fingers intertwined hers, making her unable to move. She closed her eyes and bit her lip as Shaan placed another kiss on her collar bone, a bit higher this time and casually said "Kya kar rahi hon?" Huh, thought Khanak. Main kya karahi hoon? Aap kya karahay hain?she wanted to know. But she didn't say it. Instead she managed a meek "Khana paka rahi hoon". Shaan smiled and brought his lips closer to her neck and kissed it, tightening his hold on her. " Mut pakao na! Chalo kahee bahir chaltay hain". Khanak could already feel her knees going weak and managed to shake herself so that Shaan let go of her arm. She tried a different theory; getting angry! " Toh phir iss sub khaanay ka kya hoga? She said huffily, placing her own arms on her waist. Shaan moved forward, brought his face closer and whispered in her ear in an intimate tone, "Freeze kar daina. Kal kha lain gay", to which Khanak had nothing to say. She fumbled with her hands and absent mindedly looked for dupatta to clutch but then realized it was safely resting on top of the refrigerator. She dodged Shaan and ignored his raised eyebrows and jumped to reach for it but it was not within her reach. Shaan smirked again.
"Mujhay mera dupatta dain", Khanak said not meeting his eyes
" Ermm.. Khanak mera mood nahi horaha denay ka. Tum khud hee lay lo", Shaan said, folding his hands and thoroughly enjoying Khanak's front view. Khanak continued to jump and get hold of it but was unsuccessful each time. An idea struck Shaan. He walked over towards her and in a swift instant he lifted her off her feet and carried her. She got hold of the dupata and Shaan brought her down. Khanak blushed deeply as Shaan did not let go off her. He held both her palms, bent down his face ,looked at Khanak and said " Shaadi kay baad hum pehi baar'mera mutlub hain main tumko bahir lay jana chahata hoon'just you and me, what say?" Khanak smiled and blushed again. " I will take that as a Yes", Shaan said decidedly. He brushed Khanak's hair behind her ear and kissing her ear lobe softly, he whispered, "Wear a sari. I'm waiting for you outside", and saying this he left the kitchen, giving Khanak a slight backward glance.
Khanak chose a combination of light blue and purple for her first date with her husband. She had already decided that she would give Shaan whatever he wanted tonight and this was the fist step. As she was fixing the plates of the sari, Shaan entered. Khanak, feeling embarrassed turned around but Shaan went up to her and in am matter of fact tone asked, " Help chahiyay". Khanak mutely answered "No" but Shaan went ahead and placed his hand on her hand, taking over the plates of the sari from her. Khanak protested but Shaan raised his hand to tell her to keep quiet. Khanak felt shy and Shaan who was hunched on the floor while making the plates, kept stealing glances at her. Such was the impact of her beauty that his concentration waivered and the plates slipped from his hand making Khanak's sari fall on the floor in a heap. She was only in her blouse and petti coat now. Khanak stared at the sari and Shaan stared at Khanak's flat stomach. This unintentional deed had awarded him with the sight of his lifetime! Mentally telling himself to get a grip and NOT to just grab her waist and plant kisses on her stomach, Shaan got up. Khanak, flustered, embarrassed and a bit angry said loudly " Sari pehnay main mudad maangi thee, utaarnay main nahee!" As soon as she heard the words that she had uttered, she realized what they had meant. Shaan laughed, moved closer and said " Woh pal bhee ayay ga! Don't you think? Maybe in a few hours? What say? This time I shall make NO mistake. I promise!" Khanak smiled slightly and Shaan sighed and took a deep breath. It took all his will power to control himself from just going towards the door, locking it and coming back inside to do his job. But he felt he needed to do this the right way. He had, afterall, waited for so long! Another few hours would not hurt. Who was he kidding? They would!
Shaan got into his Red spacious car and honked till Khanak came, beaming and looking beautiful. She nervously opened the door to the car and sat on the front seat. The car smelled of Shaan's favourite cologne. It was enough to liven up Khanak's senses. Shaan wanted Khanak to be comfortable at dinner. It was their first proper dinner together, almost like a date. He talked of random things, and random people, random buildings in Mumbai and the traffic! When they reached the restaurant, both of them were starving! "Mujhay buhat bhook hain, Shaantanu", cried Khanak. " Mujhay bari pyaas hain Khanak" at which Khanak gave him a shifty look. "What?", said Shaantanu " Mujhay asli main pyaas lug rahee hain!" Shaantanu laughed. "Wah Khanak, tum nay yay sub kahaan say seekha?" which earned Shaan another dirty look. It was a candle light dinner. Shaan ordered a number of dishes, all Gujrati. He had fallen in love with Gujrai food as he had fallen in love with the Gujrati girl sitting in front of him. He smiled and recalled all that had happened in the past, how their relationship was on the verge of breaking off, how Natasha had saved the day, how everything had turned out fine. He placed his hand on Khanak's hand and said, "Khanak main'main tumsay buhat pyar karta hoon'buhat zyada'main'hum dono'humain kismet nay milaya hain'theek kaha tha uss bhawashay wali aurat nay! Remember the one we met at the hotel?" Khanak smiled and said "haan" and then blushed. Shaan looked at her and he too remembered what else the tarot card reader had said. Smiling slightly again, and placing both is hands oh Khanak's now, he said, looking into Khanak's eyes "Aur haan sirf tumhara hee nahi, mera bhee ek larka aur ek larki hogi". Khanak beamed.
After dinner, Khanak couldn't stop yawning. Shaan kept giving her shifty glances on their way out of the restaurant and became more and more uncomfortable. She CANNOT go to sleep again today! I won't let her, he thought. He decided to keep talking to her on the way back. They had not even been in the car for 5 minutes when they got stuck in the worst traffic jam ever. Shaan was now getting really impatient. If tonight would not be the night, he would GIVE up! Who was he kidding again?! Khanak beside him yawned yet again, making his heart beat rise! If they did not reach home soon he might just offer to spend the night in the car, he thought. And as he thought that, a miraculous idea entered his mind; The Back Seat! "Errmm' Khanak? What do you think about the back seat?" he asked. "Huh", Khanak said, yawning. "Back Seat Khanak", he said pointing. "Achee bari hain na?", he asked, mischievously. "hmmm" said Khanak and then as an afterthought added, " Mairay sonay kay liyay achee hain". At which Shaan groaned. "Khanak! Main sirf tumharree baat nahi kar raha tha!" he made clear loudly. Then his voice turned husky and he said, "Main toh yay kah rahah tha'kay hum dono'back seat'car'samjhee?" Khanak blushed and smiled again. Tuning her face away she said "Dhatt!", causing Shaan's heart to take a somersault and wanting his Red good-for-nothing car to turn into an air plane!
