"Doctor nay tumko coffee mana kee hain Sam", Khanak said, very calmly, holding Sam's chin delicately.
"Who khotay da putr!woh MUJHAY bataya ga kay mujhay kya karna hain! Haan?!" Sam yelled.
"Haan", said Khanak simply, shrugging which made Shaan snort with laughter. As Sam and Khanak both glared at him, he composed himself and murmured distractedly, "What? It's the weekend! Can't a guy even laugh in peace around here?! Sheesh!" and he quickly hurried out of the kitchen before he got into anymore trouble.
Khanak busied herself with warming the chapattis while Sam just sulked at the kitchen table. She felt hungry but she also felt annoyed. Rahul had not called her since last night, since they had had that big argument. But she missed him already. She looked at Khanak, who was vigorously shaking the paneer saag bhaaji and warming the chapatis at the same time. She marveled at Khanak's ability to multi task. And as that thought entered her head, she felt a rush of warmth towards Khanak, surprised at her eyes watering up. She quickly drank the orange juice and wiped of her tears. Getting up she moved towards Khanak and hugged her from the back, burying her head in Khanak's shoulder. Khanak, who was not the least bit surprised, casually said "Sam, I know you'll sneeze now but please try not to aim for the food. You're the one who'll be eating this". Right on cue, Sam sneezed but managed to move her face away from the food "Oh shut up", she said hugging Khanak tightly again "I sneezed because I'm hugging wet clothes! You're wet if you haven't noticed"
"Aray main bhee kitnee burthal hoon!" Khanak said, horrified.
"Nahi Khanak, tum burthal nahi, Khoteee ho!" Sam said, laughing, which made Khanak pout.
Khanak served food to Sam, warning her that if it was not eaten till the time she came back, she would not fulfill any of her cravings ever. It was Saturday, Khanak thought, as she entered her room. Another weekend on which she had to work. Khanak had taken up the job of a teacher in a little Indian school. She taught hindi to kids aged five to eight and six months into it, she was already enjoying it. Shaantanu had been very supportive; it was he who had infact suggested it. He himself was excelling at the Textile Business he was solely handling in Singapore. It was an extension of the Khanadelwal Business, no doubt, but he was proud to tell anyone who would listen that he had got his first three projects truly due to his own dedication and hard work. Getting into his family business was not a bad idea after all. His family was proud of him and so was Khanak. Khanak, who had stuck by him in spirit through thick and thin, who had spent months alone in India, working hard to complete her education privately, while Shaantanu had struggled in Singapore trying to carve a future out of his life. And then one fine day, all the documents were signed, all the preparations made and Khanak, just days after celebrating her second wedding anniversary, had found herself on a plane to Singapore, promised by Shaantanu that they would return when the time was right.
Sam and Rahul were already leading a very happy married life in Singapore when Khanak and Shaan had stepped foot there. Khanak still remembered the time, on the first day at Sam and Rahul's apartment, when Sam was showing them their room, she had said casually "You guys might want to know that the walls here are really thin and whatever sounds you make in one room can be heard in the other. You two might want to be careful when you 'talk' , " she said the last word raising both the fore fingers of both her hands to make inverted commas, leaving Khanak scandalized and Shaan rolling over with laughter. Not surprisingly, Khanak had refused to let Shaan come close to her for the two months that they had lived at Rahul and Sam's, till they got their new place. But whereas Khanak and Shaan had not got close, Khanak and Sam certainly had. Very soon both had begun to appreciate the other for what they were rather than what they were not. Sam had become a motherly figure for Khanak, teaching her the intricacies of life in Singapore (though getting impatient with her most of the times), guiding her and making her adjust in a way that even Shaantanu could not manage. In turn Khanak had made Sam more tactful, less outright, less brash and more loving. When Sam had announced the good news, both the girls had switched roles, Khanak now being the motherly figure; something that Sam was not getting too used to; especially in Rahul's absence. Rahul had gone to Malaysia for a month to promote his new album and was due to return after another week. Sam was living with Shaan and Khanak in his absence.
Khanak grabbed a towel to dry her hair and was taking out fresh clothes out of the cupboard when Shaan walked in, hands in pocket. "How was your day? Bachay abhee tuk tang kar rahay hain?"
" Shaanatanu ap bhee na! Aap nay Sam ko coffee kyun peenay dee?" she reprimanded, totally ignoring Shaan's question.
"Aray! Phir say Sam! Sam Sam Sam Sam, uss kay ilawa kuch soojta bhee hain tumko?" Shaan cried, not rudely, just a tad bit hurt. Khanak smiled and moved towards him, placed her hand over his face and said 'Shaantanu aap ko pata hain na kay Sam kay liyay ya sub acha nahee hain? Aapko bhee na, pamper bhee nahi karna aata"
Shaan held both her palms and pulled Khanak closer. He slowly loosened her bun and let her long hair, which had now reached the end of her waist, fall over her back. Softly kissing her wet hair and placing a strand behind her ear, he said "Mujhay kaisay pata hoga kay pamper karna kya hota hain. Meri biwi pregnant thori na hain", his eyes twinkled and he smiled hopefully.
"Shaantanu app phir wohi baat lay kar baith gayay" Khanak blushed and didn't meet his eyes.
"Oh c'mon Khanak, mainay aisee kya baat kah dee! Aaj nahi toh kal bachay to honay hee hain na!" he reasoned.
"Haan laikin ,mujhay iss mulk main bachay nahi chahiyay!!! Hum jub wapis Bharat jayay gay toh main dusss bachay paida kardooo gee laikin'" Khanak said showing Shaan 10 fingers.
"Woaaahhhh oh oh Khanak! Relaxxx! Dus bachay nahi chahiyay! Sirf doh chaihyay! But at this rate I don't think we'll even have ONE!" said Shaan, frustration etched over his face.
"Aray! Duss kyon nahi!? Humaray Dhulwadi main toh har ghar main duss bachay hotay thay!" Khanak announced proudly and happily.
" They probably didn't have anything better to do" Shaan murmured but too softly.
"Kya kahan app nay?" Khanak's eyes flashed dangerously.
"Errr main toh yay kah raha tha'kay agar aisa tha meri rajputaaniii'toh tumharay'ada aur baii kay'dus bachay (he showed Khanak 10 fingers) kyun nahi thay? Batao batao!"
Khanak looked on sheepishly and said nothing. Grabbing her clothes she turned towards the bathroom but Shaan was too quick for her. He grabbed her by the waist, turned her around, looked deep into her huge eyes and said, "Khanak'Khanak--- let's have a baby'ub mann bhee jaoo'humari shaadi ko teen saal ho gayay hain---humaray paas sub kuch hain buss aik beti aur aur beta nahi hain! Yaad hain woh tarot card reader! We can't prove her wrong can we?"
Khanak looked back in to those eyes in which, not for the first time had she seen a longing for a child. Shaan looked at her 24 year old wife, feeling that life couldn't have been a greater blessing. Khanak was turning into a mature, beautiful lady by the day, he thought, and he was, even now when they were so close to celebrating their third anniversary, crazy about her. They had grown together, it felt, discovered each other deeply, and had understood each other completely. Shaan was still crazy about this woman who had completely changed his life.
Khanak said nothing. Shaan finally said "Okay fine, we won't have a baby here in Singapore but you're allowed to get pregnant here aren't you?", Shaan said teasingly.
"Main sochoo gee", said Khanak, smiling. Shaan heaved a sigh of relief, smiled and said "That's definitely a start!" He swooped down to kiss her but before he could reach for her lips, the door bell rang and Khanak moved back. "Sam khole day gee", Shaan said getting hold of Khanak's wrist. "Shaantanu woh so rahee hogee", Khanak said sternly, leaving a look of pure annoyance and aggravation on Shaan's face as Khanak trudged along.
However, what she saw at the door way made her blush horribly and lower her gaze instantly. It was Rahul, standing in the doorway, well not exactly standing; it was Rahul swooping over Sam and smooching her furiously, oblivious to the couple standing two feet across them, for Shaantanu had followed Khanak and with a rueful and resigned look, his eyes at the kissing couple had muttered, "Some married men have all the luck!"
