I think Ramayana means the journey of Ram. I read somewhere that the name Narayana comes from tow words - Nara (Human) and Ayana (Journey). The explanation for this name may be that he is the one who shows the humans the path to be followed.
Also it is true that the name Ram was the universal manthra of that age (the Tretha Yuga). In the Tretha Yuga, there were two incarnations of Lord Vishnu - both with the name Ram - Parashuram and Dashrathi Ram. Hence, it makes sense when people say that Ram was the hero of that age (as it may mean either Parasuram or the king of Ayodhya, Ram).Originally posted by: Aradhana87
