Rajnish, it was Maya danav.
There was a king named Swetaki. He was habituated to performing yagyas. When one yagya was over, he started another. Because of performing so many yagyas, the priest became tired and weak. So many priests refused to perform more yagyas. Then the king employed other priests by giving them various gifts. But they also got tired. A day came when the king could not find any priest, who was willing to perform the yagya.
Swetaki was planning for a very large yagya. He pleaded a lo with the priests, but they refused. This made the king angry. Then the priests said that only Lord Shiv can solve the king's problems. The king did tapasya of Lord Shiv. Lord Shiv appeared and asked Swetaki to ask for a boon. Swetaki requested Lord Shiv to assist him in the sacrifice. Lord Shiv said that Swetaki should make sure that ghee is poured into sacrificial fire without break for 12 years. Swetaki did the same. After 12 years, he again requested Lord Shiv to assist him in the sacrifice. Lord Shiv called sage Durvasa to perform the yagya for the king. Durvasa did the same.
So much of ghee was added into fire for 12 years. The firegod Agni felt weak because of excess of ghee. He went to Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma said, "Go to Khandav forest. Eat all the plants and all the creatures of that forest. You will regain your strength."
Agni went to the Khandav forest. But when he tried burning the forest, the animals put off the fire. Elephants filled water in their trunks and poured water on the fire. Other animals also did whatever they could to stop fire. Not only this, even Lord Indra put off the fire by causing heavy rain. Lord Indra did not want the forest to burn because he wanted to save his friend Takshak (a snake). When Agni could not eat the forest, even after repeated attempts, then he sought help of Krishna and Arjun.
One day Krishna and Arjun went to the Khandav forest. There they saw a brahman. This brahman was none other than Agni. Agni introduced himself and told the whole story. Arjun said that he and Krishna needed better weapons, bows and chariots. Agni called Varun dev. Agni and Varun gave excellent weapons, bows and chariots(with excellent horses) to Krishna and Arjun.
Then Agni started eating the forest. Krishna and Arjun stopped animals and birds from escaping. Very few could survive. (In another post, I will write more detail on who survived and how).
Lord Indra caused heavy rain. Arjun covered the forest with his arrows so that no rain fell into the forest. Then Indra came with his army to fight with Krishna and Arjun. Animals, snakes and birds also fought with Krishna and Arjun. Even demons fought (it is interesting to note that this time demons fought on the side of Indra). But Krishna and Arjun defeated all of them. There was an akashwani saying that nobody could defeat Krishna and Arjun. Then Indra decided to stop the war. Agni continued to eat the forest. The demon Maya begged Arjun to save him from fire. Since he came into Arjun's protection, therefore Arjun decided to save him. Since Arjun gave him promise, therefore Krishna and Agni also decided to spare Maya's life.
Maya was grateful to Arjun. He wanted to do something for him. Then Lord Krishna said that Maya should build an excellent palace for Yudhisthir and Maya did the same.
