The worship of Devi Durga in the month of Ashwin is called 'Akalbodhan'- an uncustomary time for commencement of the worship. It is so called since the period of this worship differs from the conventional period (during the spring - 'Basanta'). Ramayana says that when Rama was engaged in the fierce battle with Ravana, he wanted to secure the blessings of victory from Devi Durga. He held the puja to evoke the goddess during autumn to his dire plight, thereby worshiping Durga untimely (in Akal). Hence this puja is called Akalbodhon.

It was customary to worship Durga with 100 neel kamals (blue lotuses). Rama could gather only 99 of them; he offered one of his eyes as a substitute of the 100th lotus. Pleased with his devotion Durga blessed him. The battle started on Shaptami and Ravana was killed at the Shandhikshan (in between) Ashtami and Navami; he was cremated on Dashami. Therefore the four days of the puja that we celebrate ends in the triumph of the good over evil.

Durga Puja can happen few times a year, but the one done in "Saratkaal"/Autumn is the one related to Ram and called Akalbodhon.

we celebrate durga puja 2 times one as now 2day is dhasmi and the other one is during month of chaity called chaiti durgga (the autumn u r reffering) on chaiti durga navami is also called ramnavami the day when ram born. the durga puja when ram fought ravan is oct durga not autumn one as the day when ram return to ayodhya falls on dipawali 20 days after dussehra. so it should not be autumn durga puja😊

As per the Indian calendar, the seasons are divided as:
Baisakh& Jaishthya: summer (May and June)
Asard and Sravan: Monsoon (July-August)
Bhadra and Aswin: Sarat/ fall (September-October)
Kartik and Agrahan: Hemant (Niovember-December)
Poush and Magh: Winter (Jan-Feb)
Falgun and Chaitra: Basant/ Spring (March-April)
Chaitra is not in Autumn, it is in Spring or it belongs to Vasantkaal.
In Kolkata, where Durga Puja is celebrated in a magnanimous way, 95% people worship this October Puja in the form of " Mahisasurmardini", but still there are few places in Kolkata, which cling to this autumn puja as "Akalbodhon" as done by Ram. Ram killed Ravan and went back to Ayodhya in Deepawali.
