Power of The Ramayana
(www.thehindu.com-religion and belief)
It is said that reading the Ramayana brings auspiciousness to those who read it. This is seen in the case of the characters in the Ramayana. Every time any of them is in trouble and recounts the story of Rama, the troubles vanish, V.S. Karunakarachariar said.

Take the case of the monkeys which go in the southern direction in search of Sita. They come to a cave, where, with permission from the lady in charge, they eat of the plenty that is available there. They are then escorted by her out of the cave. However, the monkeys have come out of the cave just as the winter sets in. That means that the time limit set for them by Sugriva is over. Sugriva had warned them that if they did not return in the stipulated time, death awaited them.

Angada then suggests that the monkeys not go back at all, but make their lives in the place to which they have now come. But there is the question of how they will find food. Angada suggests that they go back into the cave. But Hanuman asks pertinently whether the arrows of Lakshmana will not reach them inside the cave. So Angada decides to fast to death, and the other monkeys decide to follow suit.

But even as he fasts, Angada thinks about the cause for their plight. Why did this have to happen to them? If Kaikeyi had not been granted any boon by Dasaratha, they would not be in such a situation, laments Angada. If Jatayu had not been killed, then Sita would have been saved, and then the monkeys would not have had to look for Her. At least if Jatayu had died after giving all details to Rama, the Lord would have gone after Ravana at once, without sending monkeys in four directions to look for Her.

Thus, even as the monkeys bemoan their fate, Angada details the events in Rama's and Sita's lives. So in a nutshell Angada narrates the Ramayana. As Rama's story is told in bits and pieces by Angada,

Sampaati, brother of Jatayu, who overhears Angada, gives the monkeys details of where Sita is. Thus, the monkeys get the information they want, thanks to the story of Rama being narrated, albeit in parts. Thus, the Ramayana, if read, narrated or heard, saves us from danger, and this is evident in the case of the monkeys.

AS Ramayan showed the Ahi Ravan - Mahi Ravan story, but they showed it as Ram and Lakshman both being taken to Patal Lok, and Hanuman coming to rescue them. I don't think this version is in RCM, is it? I know it's from Valmiki Ramayana and am curious how it's written there.

Sri Lakshmana-Apple of Sri Rama's eyes!

O Lakshmana! We shall ever sing thy glory and repeat, "Ram Lakshman Janaki, Jai Bolo Hanuman Ki!" Introduce us to our beloved Lord Rama, thy dear brother and master. Help us also in holding communion with Lord Rama. O Lakshmana! Be ever merciful to those neophyte Sadhakas who grope in the darkness of ignorance! Teach us the secret of success and help us in becoming staunch celibates till the end of our lives. Once again, salutations to thee, O Lakshmana, the darling of Sumitra and the apple of Sri Rama's eyes!

What is Hanuman Samhita? I heard that Hanumanji also wrote a Ramayana, but that when Valmiki heard about it he was sad because he knew Hanuman's Ramayan would be the prime source for everyone, since Hanumanji is a central character in the epic even more than him. When Valmiki expressed his sorrow to Hanuman, Hanuman threw his Ramayan into the sea so that Valmikiji's would become the prime source. I also heard that one kanda of Hanuman's Ramayan washed ashore and was found by someone, and it's in a museum today. Does anyone know if that's true?😲 If it is I would love to read it because I think Hanuman's Ramayan would be most accurate out all the sources, right? He was right next to Lord Rama during the entire epic after all.
Did anyone see the animated Hanuman movie? Even in that it showed that both Ram and Lakshman were taken by Ahi Ravan and Mahi Ravan. I want to know if that's the way it's written in Valmiki Ramayana.

@Arti,
Do you know if Hanuman samhita is online? I'd also love to read it. Perhaps it'll let me know whether Sagar Arts' Jai Jai Jai Bajrangbali is showing fiction or accurate stories.
Yes, I also heard that Ahi Ravan and Mahi Ravan were one, but some versions also say they're two so I don't know what is true. The one mistake that AS Ramayan showed is that they showed Ram killing Ahi Ravan and Mahi Ravan, whereas it's written in popular sources that Hanuman killed them. Does anyone know if some source has Ram killing them?
I think the Nama Ramayana describes Ram killing them, but I may be mistaken.

I am pretty sure Valmiki Ramayan has Ahi Ravan's story, but let me double check. I'll be back if I find it.
This is wikipedia's entry on Ahi Ravan, but you all know how dependable wikipedia is.😆 Don't know which source it got it from but this is exactly how AS Ramayan showed to story (the only change being that Ram killed Ahi and Mahi instead of Hanuman, I guess it's a blooper by the Sagars).

Ahiravan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

In the Ramayana Ahiravan (Ahiravan or Mahiravan), brothers of Ravana, was a rakshasa who secretly carried away Rama and his brother Lakshmana to the nether-world, consulted his friends and decided to sacrifice the life of the two divine brothers at the altar of his chosen deity, goddess Mahamaya. But Hanuman saved their life by killing Ahiravan and his army.[1]

In the Ramayana Ahiravan During the battle between Rama and Ravana, Ravana's son Indrajit is killed. At that point, Ravana calls his brother Ahiravana for help. Now, Ahiravana is the king of Patala (the underworld). Ahiravana promised to help. Vibhishana somehow manages to hear about the plot and warns Rama about it. Hanuman is put on guard and told not to let anyone within the room where Rama and Lakshmana are. Ahiravana tries to enter the room and makes many attempts but all attempts are thwarted by Hanuman. Finally, Ahiravana takes the form of Vibhishana and Hanuman lets him enter. Ahiravana quickly enters and takes the "sleeping Rama and Lakshmana" away.

When Hanuman realizes what happened, he goes to Vibhishana. Vibhishana says, alas they have been abducted by Ahiravana. If Hanuman does not rescue them fairly quickly, Ahiravana will sacrifice both Rama and Lakshman to Chandi. Hanuman goes to Patala. The door to patala is guarded by a creature, who is half Vanara and half reptile. Hanuman asks him who are you and the monkey says, I am Makardhwaja, your son! This confuses Hanuman, since he did not have any child. He was an adept Brahmachari and knew it to be impossible. The son explains, while you were jumping over the ocean, a drop of your sweat fell in the ocean and in the mouth of a fish called "Makardhwaja". This is the origin of my birth.

After defeating his son, Hanuman enters Patala. He encounters Ahiravana and Mahiravana. They had a strong army and Hanuman is told by Chandrasena that the only way to vanquish them is by blowing of 5 different candles located in 5 different directions, all at the same time in return for a promise to be Lord Rama's consort. So, at this point, Hanuman assumes the form with 5 heads (Panchmukhi Hanuman) and he quickly blows of the 5 different candles and thus kills Ahiravana and Mahiravana. Throughout the saga, both Rama and Lakshmana are rendered unconscious by a spell by the demons.

[edit] Popular culture

Mairavan charitra was written in Telugu language in Kavya style in the 16th century by Madayya kavi.[2]

The story of Ahiravan was made as Telugu film in 1940 by Ghantasala Balaramaiah entitled Mahiravana. The veteran actor Vemuri Gaggaiah played the role of Ahiravan.[3]

My only question about this story is why Lakshmana is sleeping.😲 Wasn't he awake during the entire 14-year vanvaas? Ranganatha Ramayana says the reason for Lakshman being awake is that he gave all his sleep to Urmila. Even other versions say he remained awake because only the one who gave up sleep and lead a brahmachaari life could kill Indrajit.
I forgot what AS Ramayan showed, but does anyone know how and why Lakshman slept when Ahi Ravan came?
