Sita's Cave and Lakshman Rekha at Panchvati

Situated at the banks of River Godavari in Nasik, Panchvati is famous for religious pilgrimage in India. It is said that, Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshamana stayed in Panchvati for some time during their exile. Amongst several temples in Panchvati, there is a cave, known as the Sita's Cave.

This cave becomes mythologically relevant as Sita along with Rama and Lakshmana is believed to have stayed here and prayed to Lord Shiva. The ancient Shivalingam still exists in a small temple inside the cave and is visited daily by hundreds of devotees. The cave is resided by effigies of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother, Lakshmana.

On occasions like Mahashivratri and Makar Sankranti, people take
bath in river Godavari at Ramkund which is believed to wipe away sins from ones life.

The famous Laxman Rekha is located in Panchavati about a kilometre away from Sita Gupha. It was from here that Ravana abducted Goddess Sita. Today this area is a major pilgrimage and tourist attraction.

The Lakshman Bridge is believed to be the site of the legendary 'Lakshman Rekha' or the line that Lakshmana had drawn to protect Sita.

For all doubting the fury of Lakshman against Bharat,

LAKSHMAN'S ANGER from: Valmiki Ramayan http://www.ibiblio.org/sripedia/ebooks/rama/

Thus Rma showed his love the rill
Whose waters ran beneath the hill,
Then resting on his mountain seat
Refreshed her with the choicest meat.
So there reposed the happy two:
Then Bharat's army nearer drew:
Rose to the skies a dusty cloud,
The sound of trampling feet was loud.
The swelling roar of marching men
Drove the roused tiger from his den,
And scared amain the serpent race
Flying to hole and hiding-place.
The herds of deer in terror fled,
The air was filled with birds o'erhead,
The bear began to leave his tree,
The monkey to the cave to flee.
Wild elephants were all amazed
As though the wood around them blazed.
The lion oped his ponderous jaw,
The buffalo looked round in awe.
The prince, who heard the deafening sound.
And saw the silvan creatures round
Fly wildly startled from their rest,
The glorious Lakshman thus addressed:
'Sumitr's noble son most dear,
Hark, Lakshman, what a roar I hear,
The tumult of a coming crowd.
Appalling, deafening, deep, and loud!
The din that yet more fearful grows
Scares elephants and buffaloes,
Or frightened by the lions, deer
Are flying through the wood in fear.
I fain would know who seeks this place:
Comes prince or monarch for the chase?
Or does some mighty beast of prey
Frighten the silvan herds away?
Tis hard to reach this mountain height,
Yea, e'en for birds in airy flight.
Then fain, O Lakshman, would I know
What cause disturbs the forest so.'
Lakshman in haste, the wood to view.
Climbed a high Sl that near him grew,
The forest all around he eyed,
First gazing on the eastern side.
Then northward when his eyes he bent
He saw a mighty armament
Of elephants, and cars, and horse,
And men on foot, a mingled force,
And banners waving in the breeze,
And spoke to Rma words like these:
'Quick, quick, my lord, put out the fire,
Let St to the cave retire.
p. 207
Thy coat of mail around thee throw,
Prepare thine arrows and thy bow.'
In eager haste thus Lakshman cried,
And Rma, lion lord, replied:
'Still closer be the army scanned,
And say who leads the warlike band.'
Lakshman his answer thus returned,
As furious rage within him burned,
Exciting him like kindled fire
To scorch the army in his ire:
'Tis Bharat: be has made the throne
By consecrating rites his own:
To gain the whole dominion thus
He comes in arms to slaughter us.
I mark tree-high upon his car
His flagstaff of the Kovdr,
1
I see his glittering banner glance,
I see his chivalry advance:
I see his eager warriors shine
On elephants in lengthened line.
Now grasp we each the shafts and bow,
And higher up the mountain go.
Or in this place, O hero, stand
With weapons in each ready hand.
Perhaps beneath our might may fall
This leader of the standard tall,
And Bharat I this day may see
Who brought this mighty woe on thee,
St, and me, who drove away
My brother from the royal sway.
Bharat our foe at length is nigh,
And by this hand shall surely die:
Brother, I see no sin at all
If Bharat by my weapon fall.
No fault is his who slays the foe
Whose hand was first to strike the blow:
With Bharat now the crime begins
Who against thee and duty sins.
The queen athirst for royal sway
Will see her darling son to-day
Fall by this hand, like some fair tree
Struck by an elephant, slain by me.
Kaikey's self shall perish too
With kith and kin and retinue,
And earth by my avenging deed
Shall from this mass of sin be freed.
This day my wrath, too long restrained,
Shall fall upon the foe, unchained,
Mad as the kindled flame that speeds
Destroying through the grass and reeds.
This day mine arrows keen and fierce
The bodies of the foe shall pierce;
The woods on Chitrakta's side
Shall run with torrents crimson-dyed.
The wandering beasts of prey shall feed
On heart-cleft elephant and steed,
And drag to mountain caves away
The bodies that my arrows slay.
Doubt not that Bharat and his train

Shall in this mighty wood be slain:
So shall I pay the debt my bow
And these my deadly arrows owe.

River in spate but within banks

though highly volatile and explosive in nature, Lakshmana would not take any action on impulse, unless he has the approval of Rama…

The noteworthy point about Lakshmana is that he would differ with Rama; he would not approve of Rama's patience, his penchant for Dharma and his ways of allowing a long rope to the enemy. He would argue with Rama. In fact he had done so several times, differing from his opinion. He would haughtily disapprove of Rama's adherence to Dharma and would even go to the extent of asking him to go back on his stand. We would see a whole lot of it when in our later instalments. But he would not move into action, take a single step forward without a nod from his brother. Rama's final decision would be binding on him, even though he might not accept it as the best course of action.

Take for instance the scene when he wanted to fight against the exile of Rama. This Sloka particularly brings out what lies in the core of Lakshmana. "These arms of mine, which are worthy of (being daubed with) sandal-paste and putting on a pair of armlets, as well as of giving away riches and protecting friends and relations, O Rama, will exert themselves today to stop those who are interrupting your consecration. Speak out, which enemy of yours may be deprived this very day of his life, fame (of invincibility) and relations. (Pray) instruct me how to proceed so that the globe may be brought under your control. I am at your beck and call." (Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda, Canto XXIII, Sloka 38-40)

Though highly volatile and explosive in nature, he would not take any action on impulse, unless he has the approval of Rama. He would beg, beseech and implore for orders and instructions. He would not act on his own unless Rama instructs him on particular issues. Rt. Hon'ble Srinivasa Sastriyar remarks, "In spite of his uncontrollable fury, the frenzy of anger, in spite of that Lakshmana is not willing to take the field and apply violence – he is so ready to actually apply violence – unless he, Rama, gives the order. He waits for his consent. Impatient, angry, uncontrolled, nevertheless, he would not take a step without his brother's sanction. So final is his dependence on Rama, so ultimate is the authority that he gives to Rama that however much he differs, he will not take his own line unless it is previously sanctioned."

Well, this was one such occasion. He is fully armoured, armed and ready to venture on a battle with Bharata and his army. But would not move an inch without orders! Rama patiently listens to Lakshmana without interrupting him in anyway. Nor does his body language reveal what runs in his mind. The long and uninterrupted peroration of Lakshmana holds enough proof. Rama knows how to take charge of the situation. He knows that if this excitable creature has to be silenced, he should be listened to, first. He lets him pour out his feelings

And finally when Lakshmana finishes, Rama just smiles. The right beginning for the right situation. Rama reveals his art of situation handling once again. He knows how to calm this excitable creature now. Not only that. He has also noted that the arguments of Lakshmana border on bragging. He knows how to start his response to make this fellow listen.

But before going into that it should be remembered that Lakshmana is not given to bragging. He does so only on two occasions, this being the second one. The first one was in Ayodhya, before commencement of exile.

Lakshmana saves sita : (as per nepalese version )

in the the forest exile supernakha saw lord rama and was enchanted by his beauty but seeing sita she got angry and waited for the right oppurtunity here sita had seen a bad dream tht an ogre had come to eat her but rama consoled her and said she should not worry coz he and lakshmana are there to protect hearing this sita is relived next day she asked lakshmana to show her the path to river godavari and they both leave...lakshmana led her to river and then he goes to collect the fruits and flower supernkha found lord rama all alone and approched rama in guise of sita...then she embraced lord rama and lord rama thought tht she is real sita ...she asked lord rama to hold her tightly lord rama was perplexed by her behaviour ...in the meantime the real sita arrived in the cottage supernakha quickly asked lord rama to protect her and said tht the real sita was an ogres and came there to eat her...lord rama believed supernakha as sita and attempts to kill real sita who he thinks is a ogres...sita called lakshmana for help lakshmana arrives at the spot though he cant recognize the real sita but he stopped lord rama from killing the persumed ogres lakshmana then got an idea he tests sita and supernakha by saying the one who brings the parijata flower is the real sita... the real sita fainted as she didnt know where she could find the real parijata flower... whereas supernaha possesed supernatural power she through her power came to know tht the flower bloom in heaven only... she quickly excused herself and rushed outside the cottage she flew to heaven and brought the praijata flower...then lakshmana held her and said only ogres or one who possessed supernatural power could know where the flower flourished ...supernakha grew angry and resumed her original form and ran to kill sita but lakshmana stood before sitamaa and mutilated her...

the curse tht turned into boon : tibetian version of ramayana

wen lord rama went after marich the golden deer and the the demon shouted for help ...sita insisted lakshmana to go to him ignoring his warning tht probably its just a demonic imitation she insulted lakshmana by saying tht he desired her... in tibetian verision of ramayana (popular in some provinces) it is mentioned tht wen sita sent lakshmana after rama she not only accused him of having design on her but added a curse on him saying "Perhaps the younger brother thinks in his mind tht wen elder brother is dead he will live together with me...if i do not want it whoever touch me against my wish be burned " and hence she cursed lakshmana but little did she knew the curse tht she uttered protected her not against the innocent lakshmana but against ravana ...who held her captive but couldnt touch her... truly a curse tht turned into boon for herself

Lakshmana's suggestion: (source bridge of Rama)

wen lord rama reached rameshwaram and saw vast ocean infront of him he asked for the suggestion from his advicers...
sugreev suggested to take a safe route via land but tht could take them 365 days to reach lanka...lord haumana said tht he could fly to lanka so he will carry lord rama and lord lakshmana and other members and will fly but lord rama rejected it as th would consume lots of energy of lord hanumana and he wanted lord hanumana to be at his side ...jamban (bear) said to swim across the ocean... lord lakshmana who was listening to this conversation sulked and said if they wont die swimming they would certainly fight the battle then lord rama asked for his suggestion to which lord lakshmana replied "we should construct the ship and sail across the ocean"...but sugreev said the troop will require lots of ships and no one in the troop knows the art of building the ship and then it would plunder the forest which he didnt wanted... lord rama said he dont want to plunder the forest there must be some other way out he would request the ocean god to show him the way lord lakshman wasn't happy he went away after some time lord rama stood beside him and asked wht was the matter
lord lakshmana replied in the low tone "y do u suspect my abilities lord rama u know i have build lots of boats during the exile and have learnt the techniques and mechanism from various sages.. allow me i will construct a ship in no time and i assure u we will reach the lanka henceforth"
lord rama smiled and said" i never suspect u lakshmana who better than I know ur immense power i know constructing the ship is lot easier task for u but sometimes for the sake of dharma one has to opt for a difficult route and impossible task"
lord lakshmana didnt said anything
and after three days wen lord rama threatened ocean god and ocean god asked him to build the stone bridge lord rama looked at lakshmana and he understood wht lord rama meant...ramsetu wasnt just the bridge tht he build on the ocean but it was the faith and belief he build in the mind of ppl NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE ! IF HEART AND MIND IS DEVOTED TO THY GOD STONE CAN FLOAT ON WATER ! 😳
