Chapter 4

Asad quickly gathered her in his arms and rushed into the room with Dilshad tagging along. "Asad, kya hua hai isse?" she asked worried. "Ammi, doctor koh phone kijiye," he told her. Dilshad dialed the doctor's number and explained what had happened. "Woh bas kuch dher mein aajayengi," she said. Asad placed her on the bed. Her pale face made him worried. What has happened? How did she faint? Tanveer just stood at the door. Every time she tried to do something, Zoya had some other plans all together. This girl was getting on her nerves since the day she had got here. Soon, the doctor was in the room checking Zoya while the family waited outside. As she walked out, Asad strode up to her. "Doctor...woh kaisi hai?" Asad questioned. "Asad, aapki Mrs. Ka blood pressure bahut low hogaya tha. Lagtha hai unone theek se kuch khaya nahi," she suggested. Asad tried to recall every time they had eaten together from the past 2 days. And he realized that Zoya never really ate, she just nibbled on her plate. "Aur shayad shaadi ki tension ki wajase woh behosh hogayi," the doctor said. "Woh theek toh hojayengi na?" Asad asked. "Ha, maine unne dawayi di hai, she should sleep tonight but subhe tak, she will be fine. Par ha Asad, make sure that she is eating and drinking well. Agar aisa phir khabhi ho toh Zoya koh clinic ley aana, main kuch blood tests karlongi," the doctor explained. "Jee, thank you so much doctor," Asad said. The doctor bid them goodnight and left. Asad went inside along with Dilshad, and Tanveer following without having no choice. Dilshad took a seat next to a sleeping Zoya and caressed her cheek. "Allah, meri bacchi ka khayal rakna," she prayed as she kissed Zoya's forehead. "Khayal rakna Asad," Dilshad said, standing up and facing her son. He just nodded. "Khala...hum aapke aur Asad kehliye khana garam karde, thand hogaya hoga," Tanveer offered. "Nahi Tanveer, mujhe bhook nahi hai. Tume khana hai toh khalo," Dilshad told her. "Main bhi theek hoon Tanveer, thanks," Asad said. Tanveer just started at Zoya for a few seconds and left from there. Dilshad too followed her out and now Asad was alone with Zoya. He took a seat next to her. His hand moved towards her face but stopped. Did he really have the right to touch her? Asad fisted his hand in anger, pain, in confusion...he didn't know. Asad pulled the blanket over her, and left from there.

A few minutes later, he changed into a white kurta pajama and returned from the bathroom. Asad realized that he couldn't sleep on the bed, she was there. He could try sleeping on the sofa but that was too small, he couldn't fit on it. Maybe, he could sleep in the guest room. But, what will he tell Ammi? No! Whatever happens inside this room stays inside these four walls. He lay on the bed in the farthest corner away from her. Hours passed but he hadn't even blinked his eye. Her thoughts seemed to overtake his mind. He tried so hard to get them out but it seemed impossible. Suddenly, he felt her hand wrap around his waist. Asad felt his heart race. Or maybe beat for the second time. The first time he had felt this way was when he had touched her.

After arguing with her on the road, he had reached the airport to find out that the flight for once had actually landed before it was scheduled to. He searched the airport for her, but couldn't find anyone who waiting for a pick up. Asad was confused. He has never seen the girl that his mother had sent him to pick up. He was just told that some girl was coming from New York and he was to get her and bring her home. How do girls from New York look like, he wondered scanning the airport. After looking everywhere, he called his mother to verify if by chance the guest has reached home. "Asad...tume usse leyne kehliye bheja tha aur tum mujhe hi phone karke pooch rahe ho?" his mother scolded. "Ammi...mujhe kaise paata tha keh flight time itni jaldi ajayegi. Mujhe laaga hamesha ki taara late hogi toh main woh kaam...," Asad tried to explain only to be yelled at more. "Kaam keh alava tume kuch dikhta hai? Bichari...paata nahi kaha hogi? Pheli baar India aayi hai aur akele ghoom rahi hai," Dilshad worried. "Ammi...I am sorry!" he apologized. "Sorry mujhe nahi...tume Zoya koh bolna chahiye," Dilshad stated. "Fine, unne bhi bol dunga," Asad agreed. "Aabh doondo usse," Dilshad told him, and ended the call. Asad looked at the possible places where she could be waiting or looking for him but didn't find her anywhere. Soon, his mother had called and told him that she had arrived. Asad felt relieved. If she hadn't showed up, his mother would have surely killed him. Asad just told his mother that he has some work and was going back to the office. Dilshad was upset but she agreed. That night when he had returned, it had been quite late. He saw his mother's note on the fridge that she had a headache and was going to bed. The note also read that dinner was on the table for him. Asad was tired so he warmed up the food and ate first. He later went to his room to freshen up. After changing into a simple, white kurta pajama, he climbed into bed to rest for the night. Something felt different! But, he was too tired to pay attention. As he turned to his side, he felt something soft press against him. "Who was in his bed?" Asad thought. The person next to him shot up. "Chor! Chor!" the distantly familiar voice yelled. Asad turned on the bedside lamp and got off. She stopped, "aap?" she said shocked. Before he could say anything, "aap mere peecha karahe hai? Dekhiye Mr. whatever, mere paas pepper spray hai, its better you stay away ok," she warned. "Unbelievable!" Asad said shaking his head. "Mere baat toh suniye," he told her but she wasn't ready to listen. "Phuphi...bachao...phuphi!" she screamed. Asad had to cover his ears to reduce his ear drums from cracking. The next instant, Asad saw his mother and sister run into the room bewildered. "Zoya...kya hua beta?" Dilshad asked the unwanted guest in his room. "Phuphi...yeh insaan mera peecha karaha hai. Dekhiye na, ghar keh andar aur phir room mein bhi aagaya," Zoya said scared "Ammi, please make her understand," Asad said, through gritting teeth. "Ammi?" she said confused. "Ha Zoya, yehi toh hai mere beta jiske baare mein main tume bol rahi thi," Dilshad explained. "What? Woh aap hai," she said surprised. "Ammi, yeh kyon hai?" Asad questioned. "Asad, yehi toh hai Zoya, maine kal baataya tha na. Tum Zoya koh toh pick karne gaye the airport se aaj," Dilshad replied. Asad and Zoya recalled their earlier meeting. "Kaise batameez mehmaan laakar raka Ammi aapne," he said to his mother. "Hawh! Batameez aur main? FYI, aap mere kamre mein aaye the," she accused. "This is my room," he sternly stated. "What?" she said. "Ha Zoya, yeh toh Bhaijaan ka kamra hai. Aap yaha kaisa aagayi?"Najma asked. "Woh acutally, main paani leyni gayi thi toh I guess I came into the wrong room," Zoya replied unsure. "Bichari bacchi, kohi baat nahi," Dilshad said. "Ammi, woh bichari nahi hai," Asad said, his nostrils flaring. "I am sorry phuphi," Zoya apologized. "Kohi baat nahi beta, hota hai. Najma tum Zoya koh leyjao," Dilshad said and both Najma and Zoya left. "Asad, woh mehmaan hai. Be nice!" his mother said. "Jee Ammi,"Asad reluctantly agreed, his eyes on the figure in the hallway in front of his room. "Allah miyan, I thought I said I don't want to see him again. Aapne mujhe unke hi ghar bhej diya?" Zoya mumbled to herself. "Batameez nahi pagal bhi hai, aur aabh woh Ammi ki mehmaan bhi hai...great just great!" Asad thought.

Asad woke up the next morning to find himself in her arms again. Hasn't he detangled him from her last night? Or did that happen in his dream? He slowly got off the bed without disturbing her and left for the bathroom. A little later, when Zoya's slumber broke, she found herself on the bed. "Main yaha kaise aayi? Aur Mr. Khan...woh kaha hai? kal raat hua kya tha?" Zoya wondered looking around the room. The last thing she remembered was making his butter chicken and serving dinner. What happened after that? She held her head in her hands as it started with a dull ache. Just then, the toilet door opened and he stepped out. Freshly showered, he was dressed in a pair of formal black pants and navy blue shirt. Seeing him, Zoya felt more awkward. She quickly got off the bed. "Good morning," she greeted. "Good morning, Ms. Farooqui! Kaisi hai aap?" Asad asked. "Hmmm...I guess I am ok. Main yaha kaise aayi?" Zoya asked confused. "Kal raat aap behosh hogayi thi due to low BP I guess, so main aapko yaha ley aaya," Asad explained. "Aap? You mean you carried me in your arms?" she gasped then closed her eyes. Why did she have to speak so much? She scolded herself. Asad turned crimson at her words but quickly composed himself. "Ms. Farooqui, aap ready hojayiye, Ammi wait karahi hongi," he said, diverting the topic. Zoya nodded. Thank you Allah miyan, she silently said. In a hurry to leave, Zoya didn't see the chair by the dresser that was pulled out. She fell forward, her eyes shut in the fear of hitting the fall. But that never occurred. He caught her elbow preventing the fall. However, the crooked angle made him stumble and they both hit the ground. Their closeness felt intoxicating. She could feel the smell of his after shave fill her senses. Zoya closed her eyes trying to control what her body was going through. Asad felt her hair brush against his cheek, the proximity creating havoc inside him too. "Ms. Farooqui, aap theek hai?" he said breaking her thoughts. "Huh? Yeah, I am fine," Zoya said. As she was about get up, Zoya and realized both realized how they were entangling with each other. His hands were wrapped around her waist, and her arms clutching onto his shirt. They broke apart quickly and stood up. Zoya ran into the bathroom while Asad went to finish getting ready for work.

When Asad and Zoya reached the breakfast table, Dilshad, and Tanveer were already seated waiting for her. "Good morning Ammi," Zoya said, walking up to Dilshad and giving her a hug. "Good morning beta! Kaisi ho tum? Kal toh darahi raha tha," she said worried. "Sorry Ammi, paata nahi kya hogaya tha. But, I am totally fine!" Zoya told her with a huge grin. "Tum baito, mere paas tumare kehliye kuch hai," Dilshad said. "Saach?" she asked surprised. Zoya took a seat while Dilshad went into the kitchen. Minutes later, she returned with a box. Zoya jumped in her seat happily and Asad looked at her surprised. He then saw what his mother was holding. "Ammi...I love you! Aapne mere liye pizza laaya," Zoya announced. "Ammi...breakfast kehliye kohi pizza khata hai?" Asad asked. "Main khati hoon," Zoya retorted. "But Ammi, this is not healthy," Asad said. "Asad, its ok. Agar Zoya kuch khale yehi accha hai," Dilshad chided her son. Asad and Zoya looked at each other. The pizza bought back so many memories!

The morning after finding Zoya in his room, Asad was huffing and puffing. He couldn't believe that his mother was letting that girl stay in their house. She was really annoying, she had an answer to anything he said, and he hated that already. Asad, you have met her twice and you already hate her, how is that possible? It is possible if that person is Zoya Farooqui, he told himself. On the other hand, Zoya wished Najma and Dilshad at the dining table. She was searching for something. "Kya doond rahi ho beta?" Dilshad asked. "Woh kya haina, kal raat maine pizza bacha kar raka tha, paata nahi kaha chala gaya," Zoya replied. "Bacha kar? Why?" Najma said confused. "Breakfast kehliye. You know I just love cold pizza for breakfast, it's delicious!" Zoya said excitedly. "Don't you think stale food is bad for health?" Dilshad said. "I know but aap log baatayiye hum fresh aur healthy khana kyun khate hai?" Zoya asked. Najma and Dilshad looked at each other. "Obviously health rehna kehliye," Najma told her. "Exactly! Aur hum healthy issliye rehna chathe hai because hum life koh enjoy karna chathe hai. Mera life koh enjoy karka funda toh simple hai, eating cold yummy pizza," Zoya exclaimed. Najma and Dilshad laughed. "Anyways, paata nahi mera pizza kaha chala gaya," Zoya said sadly taking a seat on the table. Dilshad and Najma became uncomfortable seeing where Zoya was sitting. That was Asad's seat, the one where he sat every day. They both didn't know how to tell Zoya that she should move. Najma probed her mother to tell Zoya. "Woh...," Dilshad was about to speak when Asad walked into the room. He placed a bottle of coke on the table, "aapka can. Shayad kal raat aap mere room mein bhulgayi thi," Asad said. "Sorry, kya aap yeh recycle bin mein dal denge?" Zoya requested. "Kyun na yeh aap karde? That way, you will find out where the recycle bin is," Asad stated. "Ok, cool!" Zoya said as she picked up the can. She threw the coke away and turned to see Dilshad and Najma arranging the table to fix the tiniest of details. Dilshad moved the fork to a perfect 90 degree angle whereas Najma folded the newspaper like it was before Zoya had read it. Even the coffee cup was placed perfectly parallel to the plate. Zoya looked at the three people in front of her. What was going on? She came up to the seat but Asad has already seated himself there. "Hmmm...excuse me! Yeh meri seat hai," Zoya told him. "Nahi, yeh meri seat hai," Asad said, reading the paper. "Woh actually kya haina Zoya, Bhaijaan roz yehi seat par bait the hai," Najma explained. "Ha,"Dilshad added. "Oh really? Ek chair se itni mohabbat," she said sarcastically. "Issi baat pe ek sher harz kiya hai...ruhani sukoon aur dil mein chain hona chahiye...ruhani sukooon aur dil mein chain hona chahiye...aapka naam Asad nahi, chairman hona chahiye," Zoya said making Najma laugh. A glare from Asad and Najma stopped laughing. Trying to salvage the situation, Dilshad invited Zoya to sit by her. Zoya agreed and took a seat. Asad's phone rang and he excused himself from the table. "Tum paratha logi?" Dilshad offered. "Ha phuphi, waise bhi paata nahi mera pizza kaha chalaaa...," she stopped finding her pizza slice. Dilshad and Najma followed Zoya's gaze and were shocked. Asad finished his phone call and turned to see his mother, sister, and Zoya behind him snickering silently. They all seemed to want to say something but couldn't. Asad just looked at the three ladies with questioning eyes. Dilshad walked up to him, turning him to the other side, pulled the pizza slice that was stuck to his butt. The next moment, all the ladies burst out laughing. Asad though didn't think it was funny at all. He angrily looked at Zoya while she felt uncomfortable. "Allah miyan, yeh toh mujhe aise dekh rahe hai jaise toast aur parathe nahi, main inka breakfast banjaongi," Zoya thought nervously.

"Zoya...kaha kohgayi? Pizza thanda horaha hai," Dilshad said breaking her thoughts. "Kuch nahi Ammi, khati hoon," Zoya said and she started to eat. Asad watched as she innocently relished the slice of warm, cheesy pizza. How could someone eat something so unhealthy like their life depended on it? And that too, so early in the morning? But, he also realized that this was the first time that she was eating normally since the past couple days. Asad had always noticed that Zoya ate with her heart. She wasn't one of those girls who binged on food saying they were on a diet or tried to starve themselves so they could be thin. She didn't seem to care about all that. She ate what she liked when she desired! Then, what has happened recently that she had lost her appetite? Was she just tired from all the wedding rituals? Or was it because of their wedding that she didn't eat? Obviously to all this, Zoya was busy in their own world. It has been so many days since she had a chance to taste her delicious pizza. After she decided to consent for the marriage, Zoya somewhere had lost her appetite. She felt like her life was being controlled by others. She felt like being piled on in someone's life who didn't like her. And that feeling was breaking her slowly on the inside. But, after what happened last night, she might have hope. For the first time, he had honestly praised her so maybe he too was taking a step towards making this marriage work. Zoya, you are just reading too much into this, her mind said. No! I am not wrong. There is something, her heart countered. Yeah right! Why can't you accept the fact that your husband might not like you, her head stated. Hope is the way of life. And, I want to try to make this relationship work, she thought determined. Zoya looked up and her eyes met with his. He too seemed to be thinking something. "Tum theek ho?" he asked. Asad could tell that she was surprised. "I mean, khayal raat tum faint hogayi toh," he added. "Yeah, I am better. Bas paata nahi shayad thoda chakkar aagayi," she casually replied. "Tumne toh dara diya tha beta, apna khayal rako," Dilshad said and Zoya nodded. After that, no one spoke at the table. They finished eating and Asad left for work.

Later that day, Najma came to visit the khan house and everyone was excited to see her. "Tamatar, kaisi ho tum?" Zoya exclaimed pulling her into a hug. "Main theek hoon. Aap?" Najma asked. Zoya smiled, "I am totally fine," she said. "Aabh ka yehi khade sabh baatein karlogi tum dono, chalo andar chalo," Dilshad told them. "Ha, bahut saari baatein hai. Come!" Zoya said as they took Najma inside. Najma, Dilshad, and Zoya were upstairs in Dilshad's room chatting about how Najma was liking it with Imran and his family. "Sabh bahut acche hai Ammi, I am very happy," she told her mother. "Allah ka lakh lakh shukur hai. Bas mere dono bacche aise hi khush rahe," Dilshad said smilingly. Najma beamed at her mother but she also noticed how Zoya became uncomfortable hearing those words. At that moment, they heard the house phone ring. "Main dekhti hoon," Zoya said as she excused herself. She needed to get out of that room. Zoya felt guilty. Somewhere, Asad and her were fooling Dilshad as well as her parents about their marriage. She knew that Asad wasn't happy with her. But Dilshad thought he was, that too with her. Reaching the living room, she saw Tanveer had already answered the phone. Zoya turned to leave when Tanveer called and told her that it was for her. "Mere liye?" Zoya confirmed as she walked forward and took the phone in her hand. Tanveer huffed and walked away. She had been so happy when she answered the phone and heard his voice. But, he asked instantly asked for Zoya. Why? Why couldn't he talk to her? She walked a bit further away but stopped to listen to what Zoya was talking about on the phone. "Hello," Zoya answered on the phone. "Tumne khana khaya?" she heard him ask on the other side. "Aap?" she said surprised. "Khana khaya?" Asad repeated. Zoya was confused. Why was he asking about lunch? "Nahi...abhi nahi. kuch dher mein khayenge, woh Najma aayi haina," she told him. "Ok! Najma se kehna keh wahi rahe, main kuch dher mein ghar aajaunga," Asad said. "Theek hai," she agreed and the conversation ended. Zoya stared at the phone like this was all her imagination. Was he worried about her? And that's why he called? Zoya wondered. "Kya hua Zoya?" Tanveer asked walking up to her. "Kuch nahi! Bas lunch keh baare mein pooch rahe the," Zoya replied, still puzzled with what had happened few seconds ago. "Oh of course, tum toh jaanti hona Zoya keh Jammy kitne acche hai. Tum khal raat faint hogayi thi na toh I am sure he feels bad for you," Tanveer said. Zoya felt a stabbing sensation in her chest hearing those words. So, this was all just sympathy! Did he really not care for her? Not even one tiny bit? She felt tears stung her orbs unknowingly. "Zoya, kiska phone tha?" Zoya heard Dilshad and Najma walking down the stairs. She quickly closed her eyes and composed herself. "Woh Ammi, Mr. Khan ka phone tha. Woh bas Najma koh yehi rehne kehliye bol rahe the. Kuch dher mein ghar aajayenge," Zoya informed. "Yeh toh bahut accha hai. Chalo, lunch thand horaha hai," Dilshad said.

After finishing lunch, Dilshad was putting things away in the kitchen and Tanveer had retired to her room for work reasons. Dilshad had told Najma and Zoya to catch up. She knew that these girls had so much to talk about. Though it has only been two days, there was a lot to catch up on. Zoya and Najma were relaxing on the couch and discussing about how it was to be married. "Yakeen nahi hota keh aabh hum dono ki shaadi hogayi hai," Najma said. "I know right! Jab main yaha aayi thi toh mujhe yaha apna course khatam karna tha aur waapas jaana tha. Lekin, never did I for a moment think that I will stay here forever like this," Zoya stated. "Zoya, hume khabhi paata nahi hota keh humari life mein kya hone wala hai. Only Allah knows!" Najma said. "Tum bilkul theek bol rahi ho. Anyways, tum Haseena aunty se kaise deal karahi ho? Woh tume zyada pareshaan toh nahi karti haina," Zoya said worried. "Oh no yaar! I mean woh thodi annoying hai lekin theek hai," Najma said nonchalantly. "Allah ne paata nahi kyun hum dono ki shaadi mein kohi na kohi problem di hai," Zoya said sadly. "Matlab?" Najma said confused. "I mean keh tume kitna sweet husband, I mean Imran jaisa ek accha shohar mila hai. Par Haseena aunty jaisi ek saas milli hai. jab woh hasti hai toh lagtha hai jaise bear has raha hai. Aur mujhe phuphi, I mean Ammi jaisi caring aur adorable saas mili hai. But, mere shohar toh," Zoya said shaking her head. "Kya hua Zoya? Bhaijaan se phir jagda hua?" Najma questioned. "Jagda karne kehliye baat karna zaroori hai Tamatar. Aur jab main tumare Bhaijaan keh saath hoti hoon toh mujhe aisa lagtha hai like I am stuck in a lion's den as his midnight snack. Ammi ne unka naam Asad ka rakh diya, woh toh apna role koh bahut hi serious leyne lage hai," Zoya said causing Najma to burst out laughing. "Go head, laugh at me!" Zoya said getting upset. Suddenly, Najma stopped as her eyes spotted something, rather someone at the door. Zoya too followed her eyes and gasped seeing her husband. Has he heard what she had said? Ya Allah, aabh kya hoga, Zoya thought as she looked at Najma scared.

Did Asad hear Najma and Zoya's conversation? What will his reaction be? Will it help or hurt Asya's marriage? Keep reading to find out!
