Chapter 14
They both drop to the floor just as another array of bullets take out the rest of the window. Asad ducks behind the kitchen island while Zoya takes cover behind overturned kitchen table.
Asad raises a hand to his mouth, signalling Zoya to be quiet. "We have to get to the stairs," he mouths.
Zoya shakes his head. "No," she mouths back. "The backyard."
"They probably have us surrounded," Asad mouths. "Trust me."
Asad grabs Zoya by the sleeve of her shirt and pulls her towards the basement stairs. He opens the door quickly, nearly yanking off the handle in his haste. They both jump inside and immediately Zoya reaches for the handle to close it behind them. Her balance is put off when Asad grabs the back of her shirt, and they both tumble down the first flight of stairs.
"Was that really necessary?" Zoya snaps as she climbs to her feet, immediately moving towards a box labelled Christmas Decorations.
Asad mumbles an apology of some sort, waiting as Zoya pulls out various Christmas lights and tinsel until he pulls starts pulling out multiple guns. Zoya loads a SW442 and hands it to Asad who takes it with a raised brow. "Why do I get the girl gun?"
Zoya loads the USP Elite and looks up at Asad. "Are you kidding me?"
"No," Asad says, holding his hand out for the Elite.
"Oh my god," Zoya hands him the gun and takes the SW442. "I can't believe this."
Asad takes the safety off and spins the gun on his finger. "They gave me 48 hours to take you out."
"Same with you," Zoya answers as she puts her gun in her holder. "Where's the trust?"
The door creaks open on the stairs and they take each side of the landing, guns pointed towards it. A remote robot makes it's way down the first set of stairs and then turns on the landing, dropping something down the remainder of the stairs.
It rolls between Asad's feet, and when he sees it's a grenade, he kicks it hard towards the opposite end of the basement. He remembers too late that the fuel oil is over there as well.
"Did you just?"
"Yes, I did."
They both run towards the cellar, backs pressed together as they throw open the door and shots begin to fill the air. They get about ten strides away from the exit before the grenade goes off and the house explodes. Zoya and Asad are sent flying through the air, landing underneath a tree as their house bursts into flames behind them.
"God dammit Asad, " Zoya swears as she extinguishes the fire on her boot. "I liked this house."
Asad wipes the ash from his face and smiles innocently. "Sorry?"
"Come on, we have to find a car," Zoya says, helping Asad to his feet.
They keep their guns raised as they walk, Asad covering Zoya as she smashes the window on a garage and climbs through. Asad follows after her, nicking her hand on a piece of glass.
"I was never in the Peace Corps," Zoya reveals as she pushes two wires together and the motor comes to life.
"Oh come on, I really liked that about you," Asad says, putting on his seatbelt.
Zoya pushes the button on the dash and behind them the garage door begins to open. There's a single gunman waiting for them, and Zoya pushes her foot down on the gas, hitting him and knocking him backwards. She climbs out of the car and grabs the man's gun, hopping back inside the van
"Buggers get younger every year," Zoya says as she backs the van out over the man.
"Did you just?"
"Yes, I did."
They make it to the highway without further incident, and Asad clicks on the radio. "You know, since we're being completely honest, I feel I should tell you that your cooking is terrible."
"Oh honey, I've never cooked a day in my life," Zoya answers. "It was all my assistant."
"This marriage has been built on a web of lies," Asad says, feigning anguish. "I feel like I don't know anything about you."
"We have company," Zoya says, eyes on the rear-view mirror.
Asad turns in his seat, groaning when he sees the three cars chasing them. "Great, just great."
He climbs over the center console, Zoya smacking away his hand when she uses him to help keep her balance before tumbling into the backseat. "Hey, put the claws away."
"Watch out, I have teeth too," replies Zoya.
Asad reaches for the button on the roof, the back hatch popping open as he ducks down behind a case of golf clubs. Almost immediately gunfire explodes from all three cars, and Asad attempts to shoot out the windows but is met with bulletproof glass. He reaches above his head and pushes the button and watches as the hatch closes.
"They're bulletproof!" Asad yells over his shoulder as he reloads his gun. "I feel now would be a good time to tell you I was married once before."
Zoya slams on the brakes, throwing Asad between the seats and back into the front. One of the cars tailing them slams into them, rear end sliding underneath their wheels. Immediately after, Zoya begins slapping Asad,, aiming for any body part she can reach.
"Are you out of your mind? What is wrong with you?" Asad shields himself with his hands, careful to keep his finger off the trigger.
"You're what's wrong with me!" Zoya says angrily.
"It was just a 24 hour thing in Vegas!" Asad says defensively, climbing back to his feet.
Zoya puts both hands back on the wheel. "Like that's so much better!"
"Stop it!" Asad says as he grabs a golf club and opens the hatch. She hits the man hanging out of the car over the head with it and kicks him in the chest, sending him flying backwards. When she bounces back, Asad reaches down and grabs whatever is in his front pocket, eyes widening when he comes back with a pin. He jumps back into the car screaming, "Go, go, go!"
Zoya guns it, wheels spinning on the hood until finally they break free, Asad ducking down behind the golf clubs just as the grenade explodes and takes the car with it.
"What's her name and social insurance number?" Zoya asks.
"No, you're not going to kill her," Asad answers as he picks up his gun.
Zoya grabs his gun from the passenger seat and twists the steering wheel around, the van skidding across the pavement as he shoots out the wheels on one of the cars before aiming bullets underneath through the tire wells on the other one. They collide in the middle of the highway, metal crunching and fires blazing.
"Good shot," Asad says. "Who knew."
Zoya adjusts the van so they're driving straight as Asad climbs into the front seat. "Thank you," she says, preening a little.
"Where to next?" asks Asad.
"Does Ayaan still frequent that diner you two always escape too?" Zoya says, swerving around a tire.
Asad reloads his gun and nods. "You know Ayaan. Can never resist a good greasy burger."

Asad waits for Ayaan to order his usual before sliding into the booth across from him.
"Asad! It's uh.. good to see you, bro," Ayaan says, folding his hands on the table. "Did you kill that lying bitch?"
"This lying bitch?" Zoya says from the other side of the booth.
Ayaan falters for only a moment. "Hello, Zoya. Always a pleasure to see you."
"As it is you," Zoya answers dryly.
"So Ayaan man, how bad is it?" asks Asad.
"Remember Canada?" Ayaan replies, lifting his coffee cup and taking a gulp. "It's almost as bad as that."
Asad swears under his breath. "What do we do?"
"What do you do? Listen bro, I'm all for reconciling your love and all that shit, but you guys don't stand a chance together. You have a small chance if you're separated, but together? No way. Our entire agency is after you, hers probably is too. The only thing that will help you is if you have something that they want. Something they want more than you."
Zoya's head snaps up suddenly and she's out of the booth before Asad can ask him what's wrong.
"Look Ayaan, I love you, but if you come after us, one of us will kill you," Asad warns before following Zoya out of the diner.
Zoya is behind the wheel on her phone, and from what Asad can tell she's yelling pretty loud. He opens the passenger door slowly and then steps inside.
"Where are they keeping him?" Zoya asks the person on the other end. There's a moment of silence before Zoya says, "Thank you for your help, Najma."
Asad raises an eyebrow. "What was that about?"
"A couple weeks ago, they put me on a mission to take out someone," Zoya starts. "But before I could take him out, there was a giant explosion and the distraction gave them enough time to get him back to safety."
Asad clears his throat. "That explosion? Yeah.. that was me, trying to take him out," he says sheepishly.
Zoya stares at him for a moment before reaching forward and slapping him on the head. "You have terrible aim."
"Ayaan hit my elbow when he was reloading. It was not my fault," Asad says as he buckles his seatbelt.
"You're both idiots. No wonder you get along so well," Zoya starts the van and puts it in reverse. "So both of our agencies want the same person. We get him from where he's being held, and tell them that if they want him, they have to get off our backs."
Asad rolls his eyes. "Right, because there's no way this could end badly."
"Trust me," Zoya replies as begins to drive. "We're going to be okay."

chapter 15
Getting their hands on the witness turns out to be the easy part. It's a little more difficult to actually get him off the premises.
"Zoya, watch out!" Asad yells as they swerve, a grenade landing only a few feet away from them before it rolls onto the grass and explodes, causing bits of dirt to spatter the side of the van.
"You know, since you kidnapped me from my kidnappers the least you could do is drive in a straight line," the witness says from beneath his pillow case.
"Can you shut him up? Please?" Zoya snaps from the front seat.
Asad grabs the top of the pillow case and pulls it off his head. "Could you shut up before she kills you? Because she will, and I won't be able to stop her."
The man laughs and twists his head to smirk at Asad. "You guys aren't going to kill me. You would have done it already."
"Don't tempt me," Zoya mumbles, turning up the radio.
Asad shoves pillow case back over the man's head and climbs into the front seat. "Why are your claws out?"
"Because doing things your way set off every god damn alarm in the building, we're lucky we even got out alive!" Zoya says angrily.
"My way got the job done," Asad replies proudly.
"It's always your way! You're always the first one to break team. It's annoying," Zoya says, turning sharply and making Asad smack his head against the window. "I need someone I can rely on."
"There's no room for mistakes, Zoya," says Asad. "We have to be a team."
"Like we know anything about being a team. This entire marriage is a fake, built on a web of lies. We wouldn't know what a team was if it smacked us in the face," Zoya says.
If she sees the regretful look on Asad's face, she doesn't say anything about it.
Getting the witness into the hotel room without making a scene also proves to be very difficult. After uncuffing him and taking the pillow case off his head, he tries to escape from the van. He screams loudly as they carry him inside, Zoya yelling, "He's our son. He has a mental health problem, don't worry!"
By the time they get him inside and strapped to a chair, Zoya is already impatient.
"Zoya and I may be having some domestic talk, but don't let that make you any less scared okay?" Asad says as he settles in the chair across from him. "Okay,Akram, why do both our agencies want you dead?"
Akram purses his lips and then shakes his head.
"Okay so we have three options here. The first one being that you talk, we talk, and everyone leaves happy. The second option, my personal favorite, is that I take your fingernails off with my pliers until you do talk. The third one, Zoya likes a variety but at the end of every one, you end up dead."
"Can I get a soda?" Akram asks, and Asad barely has time to register Zoya grabbing the phone beside the bed before she's up and hitting Akram over the head with it. "Okay, okay. I'll talk, I'll talk."
"Good shot, sweetheart," Asad says with a grin.
Akram tugs at his bonds for a moment before he gives up. "Check my back pocket."
Zoya moves forward and pushes Akram's head forward, reaching into his back pocket. Asad watches as the smile slips off Zoya's face.
"I'm not the target," Ryder says. "You are. You both are. Two competing agents living under the same roof? It's bad for business."
"If you're the bait, then that means.." Zoya trails off as he starts towards the window, and Asad turns on Ryder.
"My belt, my belt, don't hit me," Akram says, flinching backwards as Asad unclips his belt.
Asad flips it open, the locator beeping. "We have two minutes."
"One minute," Zoya corrects.
"We have to go, now," Asad says, grabbing Zoya's hand and flinging open the side door that he knows leads to the next hotel room. "Come on."
They make their way quickly through each hotel room until they come to the front office. Asad makes sure the coast is clear before smashing the back window and hoisting Zoya up so she can climb through. Asad climbs through after her, and they both go for the nearest car and stumble into the backseat.
"My way out is a boat in the harbour," Zoya says softly.
Asad turns his head to look at him. "Mine's a car off Highway 182. What's your point?"
"At least apart we know what the odds are," Zoya replies. "Let's just call this what it is.. and what it isn't."
"So our marriage is shit," Asad whispers back. "I'm a mess and you're a disaster. We're both liars. But if you run, you'll always be running. I say we stay and fight. We take this thing to the end."
Zoya laughs quietly. "We're outnumbered by hundreds."
"We're also the best," Asad replies easily.
Zoya licks her lips and ducks further down in the seat. "Let's do it."
They make their way into a mini-mall, abandoned as it's nighttime and they quickly change out of their clothes into suits. Zoya thinks she looks alright in her, but the way Asad's hugs his body sends blood rushing in a whole different direction.
"You look good, Zoya Farooqui," Asad says, eyes wandering up and down Zoya's body.
Zoya blushes, can't help but feel a little bashful. "It's Zoya Ahmed Khan actually."
Asad smiles wide and his eyes light up, and it's then that the Zoya nearly gets hit with a bullet.
The first round of assassins they take out are easy, young ones who have just been brought in to tire them out. Zoya doesn't feel bad as she fires, he knows it's either her and Asad or them. She just got her husband back, she doesn't want to lose her again.
The next round is more difficult, and one manages to shoot Asad in the arm. Zoya shoots the one that fired the bullet and takes out the three that come after him. She tears off the bottom of her shirt and wraps it above the wound to cut off the circulation.
"You okay?" Zoya asks as she reloads.
Asad cocks his gun and gets to his feet. "If I say no, will you be my naughty nurse?"
"Asad Devil Ahmed Khan, we could get killed any minute and that's what you choose to say to me?" Zoya squawks. "No tact."
"Look at yourself and then tell me I have no tact. As soon as we're done here, I'm going to show you exactly what I think of you," Asad says.
Zoya rolls her eyes and begins firing again, both her guns held over Asad's shoulders as Asad shoots in the opposite direction on either side of his waist. They're chest to chest and Zoya would be lying if she said it isn't exhilarating watching Asad's face as he shoots.
When there's finally no more bullets coming their way and all the helicopters that were hovering over the mall have disappeared, they fall into each other. Asad's arms curl tightly around Zoya's waist and Zoya's fingers entangle into the back of Asad's hair.
"I love you," Zoya whispers into the side of Asad's neck. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
Asad kisses Zoya softly on the lips and pulls back. "I love you, too."
"What are we going to do about the house?" Zoya asks as she brushes off her pants.
Asad shrugs, tucking his gun back into its holster. "I've heard New York is always nice."
