Part 7-A
The First Blow

It had been a week they were here and it seemed that Asad alone lived there. Because until now, it was him talking or cracking jokes and all... to which she kind of paid no heeds at all, or so it seemed. I mean, she didn't even laugh on the joke on which Asad himself couldn't stop laughing for two days. But then it was Zoya, with whom nothing was normal at all...
Thinking so he sighed. He heard the utensils clattering in the kitchen and smiled it was her way of telling him that dinner will soon be ready...
"Wo...ummm... the dinner is ready" And as expected, there she was, by the door, calling him. He turned around and walked inside, it was dinner time...

__________________________

Asad sat on the chair, while Zoya served the dinner. After she had filled his plate, she turned to go inside the Kitchen when suddenly he held her wrist.
"Sit" he said with authority.
"Wo...I'll just get the curry..." she tried to escape.
"I don't need it zoya... just sit and eat", he said looking in her eyes.
As they ate in silence, Asad found her lost somewhere, playing with her food.
"Tum khush ho?" , Asad was himself surprise at the question. He never intended to ask that. He knew the answer was obvious, he cringed at the thought!
"Huh?", she raised her eyes to him. "Wo... "
"Wo kya zoya? It's a simple question with a simple answer, either you are happy or you are not..." he continued "Trust me, even if you say no..." his eyes softened as he squeezed her hand resting on the table. Although he had a soothing posture, his pulse raced as he looked at her, a lump forming in his throat contemplating the answer, he knew his life depended on it.
"I... I don't know..."She said and lowered her eyes.
Now this was an unexpected answer. She doesn't know? What is that supposed to mean?' He thought.
"What... what do you mean?"
She Sighed. "Are you?" she countered.
"Zoya, I... I am, I am happy, simply because I love you..." He sighed noticing the confusion in her eyes." But look at us, kaha hain hum? Still strangers? What do I know about you except your name and official details."
"Asad I-"
"No" he cut her in between, desperately needing to make her understand "See...this marriage, it really means a lot to me, its sacred...and I want it to work...for us" he said with utmost honesty, pouring out his feelings to her.
She just kept looking at him, her eyes finding something.
He waited for her to respond but when she didn't he simply sighed and continued, "but Zoya...I, I feel culpable", he closed his eyes for a moment to get a grip on himself "Now that I look at us, I really do zoya... mai nahi chahta k tum, you... waste your life like this! Agar tum mere saath kush nahi ho to..." it ached, his heart bled when he let out these words "to mere liye tumhari khushi se barh kar kuch nahi hai, if...if you want, I'll... I'll...dis...dissolve this marriage f-for you" he completed, feeling a lump forming in his throat. He didn't know if he should have said this, and he knew he had probably played the biggest gamble of his life, saying this for the sake of making her speak was, although unintentional, but it could make him pay real hard.

"Na...Nahi...it's not what you think it is", she said looking down. And God knows what kind of relief that had given to Asad. Like he'd conquered Everest, a sense of liberation washed over him and he rolled his eyes as a reflex and gave out an honest sigh.
"Then what is it?", He asked with softened eyes one he got over his initial relief. "What is stopping you Zoya?"
"I- I have a past Asad, and I... I dread that...", she said as Asad noticed the goosebumps over her arms.
"It's OK", he pressed her hand that he still held "I won't force you to tell me anything, In fact I'll wait... wait for you to open up... for you to trust me enough to let out your feelings..." he continued, "All I want for now is to... to try, I want us to try and make this work. Will you do this for me? For us? Will you try?" He pleaded with his eyes.
Zoya looked at him, the look in his eyes comforted her, somewhere he assured her that if not now... someday, It will be OK, Her heart wanted to give it a try, like it was willing for a second chance... but was she ready to embrace it?
"I will, I will try Asad" she pressed his hand over hers. Yes, she was ready to embrace it.

__________________________

"So?" Asad eyed Zoya as she came out of the kitchen after clearing the dishes. "Are you going to sleep?" he added with a smile.
"No- it's just, I was just..."
"Matlab you are free.." he shook his head smiling slightly. The conversation at dinner had lifted a huge weight off his heart. "Aao sit, lets watch TV" he patted on the sofa. She silently went and sat next to him.
"So? What do you want to watch?" He asked as he randomly switched the channels.
"kuch bhi, It'll be fine" she looked at the screen.
"Ok then..." he thought on watching some movie and was switching to HBO, all this while his eyes glued to her, then he saw her eyes wide and lips slightly curved. Following the direction of her gaze, he looked at the TV screen and was surprised; a little grey bunny wearing a diaper was reprimanding a small black duck, also wearing a diaper while a golden bunny with a bow on her head stood crying and surprise! She was also wearing a diaper. She wants to watch this?' he thought But of course she won't say. So he decided on giving this to her.
"WOW! Cartoons", Asad remarked. "Let's watch this". And well what are they called? Diaper-y dudes?'. He chuckled at his thought but anyways... anything for her...right?

"You like them, don't you?", he said after a while when he saw her actually enjoying the show and totally forgetting his existence. Well, it didn't bother him as well because all the while he was just busy looking at her and thinking of their possibilities... a future.
"Huh?... yeah Baby Loony Toons' my favorite cartoons since child hood, you like them too?" she asked considering that since he had turned the channel on , so he might as well like them.
"What?", he said with a strange face, "Of course, I just love cartoons" he said sarcastically stressing on love'. But she was way too engrossed in them to notice the sarcasm. Only if she knew him she would know how much he hated them, even as a kid, he was never fond of cartoons, be it these dumb looney toons or some super hero stuff. Agar cartoon wali pasand na hoti to cartoons ki shakal bhi na dekhta kabhi', he thought twisting his nose.

Asad was almost asleep when the cartoons ended but thanks to the loud ending jingles that woke him wide.
"They were nice...weren't they?" she asked with big round doe-y eyes.
"Huh?...ye.. yeah.. they were.." he searched for words "out- outstanding...yeah" For once he was glad she didn't notice him sleeping all this while.

"Its late, I think we should sleep", he said as he noticed the silence making way between them again.

__________________________

And in the bedroom as he saw her coming out of the bathroom, all dressed up for hitting the bed, their eyes met and then they looked at the bed and then back at each other. And then again an awkward silence settled between them
"Umm... I, think the couch will be good for me" Said Asad scratching his head, Now that they were on some terms, he didn't want any sort of relapse that would set them back years maybe.
"N-no its OK..." she said and he raised his eye brows at her "I mean...we", she sighed.
"You mean we can share a bed... right?" to which simply nodded making him smile.
"See Zoya, let's practice..." he said making his way towards her, "How about you trying a hand at sentences?"

She simply raised her brows, quite not getting him. He simply smiled at the innocence in her eyes. Mahn! It's going to be hard staying away from her.
"Nahi matlab, ab tum monosyllables me baat karti raho gi to mai to museebat me par jaun ga!... sari zindagi tumhari baatain decode karta rahun ga, budha ho jaun ga" he said "and trust me I am more useful in this age then I will be when I'm old" His eyes mischievously mingled with hers. And she just gave an awkward smile.
"To chalo lets practice... ab jese when I come back home from work to tum sirf "Hi" ki jagah keh sakti ho, "Oh hi Asad! Kese ho? How was you day?", He said animatedly, making her smile. "Chalo shabash try karo.. say "hello-", He stopped mid-way when she shook her head.
"Asad I know sentences.."
"You do? How come I didn't realize that?", He frowned animatedly. But soon enough he decided to end this little mischief right there, sensing that was just a start and it would be better not to drag too much.
"See, Zoya, I am your husband, and out of everyone on this planet earth, you can be yourself with me. And since you are willing to try" His eyes softened "I think you should at least talk easy with me, Okay? That can be your first step..." He looked expectantly at her.
"Ummm-hmmm" she simply nodded.
"And I think it's enough of my lectures now, chalo lets sleep", and they got into the bed tucking themselves properly.

__________________________

"Good morning Asad" He opened his eyes to be greeted by her, a million dollar smile adored his face. How he wished his every morning would be like that.
It had been four days since the conversation with her, when she said she would try. And since then she had been making a little progress here and there, not that any of that was very significant or noticeable but to Asad they meant a lot. His heart went out to her every time she tried; just a little thought of her willing to give this marriage a chance, made his heart swell. He was now open -although not very open- but open on stranger basis to her, just like you are when you began friending a person. A little joke here and small mischief there, making both of them smile. And today was just another day at her attempt;
"Good morning!" He yawned "seems that someone has been practicing the night" saying so he winked making her lower her eyes.
"No, noth- nothing like that", How did he know I have been practicing? She thought oddly.
"I'll freshen up and let's have breakfast then", he said and turned to go to the washroom smiling at her little attempts at trying'.

__________________________

Asad came out of the washroom, wrapped in nothing but a towel, he knew she was just outside but even that didn't make him any bothered, all he did when that thought crossed his mind was to wonder what will it be like, having her hands allover his naked torso... shameless jerk! He wanted to reward himself with that for thinking so about her... but then decided the other way, brushing it off claiming it as his right...
Grinning like an idiot on his not-so-clean thoughts he picked up his deodorant and just when he took off the lid, suddenly the deo fell from his hands and rolled over under the bed.
Letting out a groan, he went towards the bed and knelt down, and before he could get hold of the deo, he had his hands on something else... he just dragged it forward and out from under the bed. He was surprised to see a plastic box, filled with some cash and mostly coins. What the...? Who put this here? Zoya? Yeah! Her!... she's the only one here...but why would she? Still trying to get his head around what was going on; he bent down again and found one more box under the bed. He took it out and opened it, only to get shocked out of his wits. His eyes widened as he saw food inside it.
His mouth fell lax as he stood rooted to his spot. He didn't know what was going on... and seeing this, he didn't know what to do. Should he confront her? Should he put it back? Or should he...
Soon as heard footsteps approaching the room, with a sudden rush of adrenaline; he ran with the boxes still in his hands into the washroom and waited till she went out. Hoping she was not there for boxes.
When she was gone, he just came out and put the boxes back into their place, took out his deo and got dressed. He was too numb from the shock to think straight right now.

__________________________

The breakfast was quiet but the silence did not make any of them awkward anymore, although Asad had very conveniently avoided thinking about what happened in the room and well right now, as he looked at her, he was quite concerned about her since she always preferred to play with food, eating almost nothing, and she did that with every meal. The girl- his girl- was a mystery, how he wished she would open up! He just kept looking at her...
"Go out with me?" the words slipped before he could get hold of them.
Her eyes shot up to meet his.
"I mean..." he pursed his lips looking at her in fear- fear of ruining whatever progress they had made "I... just an outing Zoya!" he sighed and closed his eyes. "Just a random dinner out, nothing more" He looked at her his heart racing million beats per second anticipating her behavior.
"Okay", she said and then started playing with her food again taking Asad by surprise. Her behavior was unfathomable but before he could give it another thought his pager beeped a 911. "Okay Zoya, then get ready by seven, I'll be home and then we'll go" He gathered his stuff and made his way out of the apartment.

__________________________

Asad came home by seven, his mood had elevated itself just at the thought of getting a chance to know her a bit at personal level.
"Hey!" he entered smiling only to startle her as she jumped up from the sofa.
"Oh... hi", she faked a smile at him. "Chale?" she asked not quiet looking at him.
"haan..chal-" his words faltered as he eyed her from top to bottom "Aise?" he asked because there she stood in her black casual salwar suit, dupatta draped around her neck, no makeup except kohl that she usually wore and her hair as usual left open.
"Kyun k-kya hua?" she looked at him and then herself.
"Kuch nahi...just", he shook his head "you surprise me at times Zoya" he said the word of heart, he was actually surprised looking at her dressed in the casual suits she wears at home, not doubt she looked beautiful but shouldn't she be all "it" like other girls, he smiled softly and shook his head, how could she ever be compared to any girl, after all she was...his girl.
"Chalo lets go" he smiled turning to her and ushering her along with him.

__________________________

The drive was very quiet, with Zoya looking out the window and Asad stealing glances at her, admiring the wind played beautiful face, having a hard time not pushing behind the locks that air piloted to her face.
He took a turn to the most lavish five star in Shimla, reaching to the parking lot, Asad was looking for a place to park when Zoya called him.
"A-Asad please..." her voice came in a mere whisper. He was about to tell her to give him a second when the pain in her voice hit him with full force causing him to turn towards her.
"Are...are you OK?", he posed, concern in his eyes.
"Yea- Yeah...", she continued "Can...can we please go some-somewhere else?"
Asad looked at her oddly, tilting his head he gave her an assessing look "But Zoya that's the nicest place to eat in town..." he continued when he failed to look past her statement.
"I -I...", she faltered and then sighed, then mustering up courage she continued "Can you not take- take me somewhere else?" she said looking at him with pleading eyes.
"Ohk", he sighed shaking his head "where would you like to go then?"
"I...I don't know... anywhere Asad but please not a restaurant.."
what? Anywhere? Where else do you go to eat then?, Asad thought helplessly looking at her...
"Bu-..." he was about to voice his thoughts but then thinking otherwise, pressed his lips and shifted the gear to pull out "then let's take you somewhere else"
Asad drove aimlessly on the main road for good five minutes and then as if suddenly realizing something, he took a U-turn and drove straight ahead.
They drove for a good forty minutes, only once stopping at a random take away where Asad bought some food for them and then without a word, pushing the packets on the backseat he started driving again.
All this while he kept quiet, thinking of the possible reasons of her denial to eat at any restaurant, silently mourning at the little arrangements he had made there in order to make her feel special. A part of him was getting frustrated over her behavior but a bigger part of him wanted to just be with her, hence dominating the frustrated part...But this girl, his wife confused him to no limits.
He was too engrossed in his thoughts to notice Zoya who kept looking at him from time to time as if contemplating his thoughts or maybe wanting to say something. She kept matting her finger as if nervous over something or maybe just a part of her was feeling guilty of not being able to open up to him, when she'd promised she would try...when he'd been so supportive...
In all this thinking process, she didn't notice that the car had halted, but when she felt Asad moving out and opening the door for her, her looking beyond the wind screen and what she saw made her eyes wide and she took in a sharp breath.

__________________________

The view in front of her eyes was mind boggling; a lake surrounded by trees, its water sparkling with the moon light. Cool breeze from the now settling evening kissed her face as she stepped out of the car. She realized Asad saying something from behind but she was too busy admiring the view to hear him out.
She didn't know for how long she stood there admiring the serenity, it was only until Asad came in front of her and forwarded his hand.
"Chale?"
She looked at his hand and then back at him and in one unregistered moment she gave her hand in his; A chill ran through both their spines when that happened... it was like a Deja vu moment where both of them went back to their wedding day when they had held hands for the first time.
Asad ushered her to a little stepper place near the lake where he had already laid the mat before, then taking off their shoes they sat side by side, looking ahead of them.
Both were silent for a moment.
"It's- it's exquisite" She said looking at the view.
Asad turned to look at her and was stunned for a moment, As she looked ahead, the silvery light from the moon made her face shine, the reflection from the water made her eyes twinkle, she looked to him an epitome of beauty. "Yeah...exquisite" he said with all the admiration in his eyes, this view to him was better than the one in front of him. He immediately sobered himself when she turned to look at him.
"What is this place called?"
"Its Tani Jubber Lake...one of my favorite places in Shimla" he said with a small smile, to which she nodded politely.
"how come this place is so beautiful and not crowded?" she posed
"Well"... Asad smirked at her and continued "The lake is usually crowded but maybe people don't know that this place exists" he looked at her as she raised a brow at him "I mean... this place is quite away from the usual tourist spots and this point being deep in the trees, is the only unfenced part of the lake, I found it some years back when I came to Shimla" he explained.
"Hungry?" he asked a few minutes later.
"Huh- yeah!" she came out of the revere.
Asad turned in the direction opposite to Zoya and took out the food packages.
"There you go.." he handled her a brown paper bag. Zoya took it from him with a soft smile and opened it to find a packed Zinger in it... her smile faltered.
"What happened?" he said noticing the change of expressions on her face.
She just kept looking at him and then shook her head forcing a smile on her face. She looked down and started unwrapping her burger to escape his questioning eyes.
She fumbled clumsily with her Zinger as she took a bite from it making its contents go out from the other side, she put the thing down, collected it and then tried to take another bite, this time the same happened as well. She looked at it and was about to try again when she heard Asad crack up. She looked at him laughing.
Asad's laughter died once he got a hold of her eyes. They were full of hurt and unshed tears.
"Hey...I'm...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." he said as guilt immediately took over him.
Zoya just kept looking at him and then forcing the tears back he closed her eyes... "It's Ok" she said with eyes still closed and then opening them she rewrapped the burger and put it back in the paper bag.
"Hey..." Asad looked at her "I'm sorry Zoya, please don't put it back, tum kha lo and I promise I won't laugh..." he said with sincerity as another wave of guilt washed over him.
Zoya kept looking at him and then turned her face to look ahead. While Asad kept looking at her, cursing himself for laughing at her, for ruining the most genuine and open moment he had had with her till date.
He kept arranging the words in a sentence in his mind wanting to break the silence that had just taken over them. She had spoken nothing since that time and it was almost half an hour now... Reaching on a conclusion he decided on saying sorry to her once more.
He was about to open his mouth when he heard her; and what he heard hit him at a thousand miles per hour. As if... someone knocked the air out of him.
"Do you know what is it like to eat only so you won't die?" she questioned still looking ahead. And then silence took over again. A long...long pause.
"What- what are you saying?" God knows how hard it was for him to manage these words out of his mouth.
"I have not had a burger since I was fifteen" she spoke in a mere whisper, taking him by surprise, but before he could think himself into the thought she might just not like burgers but then her words from before stopped him from making any opinion.
"In fact I have not had anything except daal since I was seventeen... or until...until I...I got married to you" she said making Asad intake an audible breath.
Is she kidding me? How is that possible? He thought but when he looked at her he knew she wasn't, she was still looking at something ahead in the lake a tear sliding down her angelic face. At something about this all made him stomach churn.
"I have been eating daal since I was seventeen, every single day, every meal of the day..." she said " If I ever had one that is..." the last phrase in such a low voice that Asad literally had reassure himself that he did hear them.
"Then why did..." the question faltered on his lips as he noticed another tear escape her eye.
"I didn't have the money Asad...", she said as a band of tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Zoya this...what? What are you...saying?" Asad had a horror stricken face as he heard her "Your family..."
"They were rich Asad...they are... not me!"
And before Asad could get a grip on himself or his brain about anything that was happening he heard her again, "Take me home... please" was a mere plead on her lips. It was all she could manage to say.
