Once Kerala the God's own country ruled by the the asura raja Mahabali. The peaple were very happy in the kingdom and there was no crimes,corruption, discrimination and etc so the Gods becme jealous(please note itz a mythical story. Aditi (the mother of God) seeked help from Lord Vishnu and he takes Vamana avatar to test Mahabali who was a charitable person like Karnan in Mahabarath. And Lord vishnu asked 3 steps of land from him and he agreed... Then next, amazing twist...Vamana increased his size and with his 1'st and 2'nd step he covered whole earth and sky then he asked where is the place to keep his 3'rd step. Mahabali with folded hands bowed before him to place his last step on his head. Vamana did that and pushed Mahabali into Pathala. Mahabali requested that he be allowed to visit Kerala once in a year and Lord Vishnu grant the wish..
So, we celebrating Onam with somany cultural programs for the subsequent homecoming of Mahabali...
