Part 3:

Sanam walked into the small flat using the keys Badi Ammi gave her. It belonged to a close relative of Badi Ammi, a lady called Razia Siddiqui, apparently her stepgrandmother. The weight of the revelations that Badi Ammi rained upon her this morning was beginning to press down on her head. She put on some lights and sat heavily on the sofa.

Pressing the bridge of her nose, she massaged her throbbing head. When she opened her eyes, she saw a large framed picture on the wall. A distinguished looking man, in a Muslim skullcap with a closely cropped beard and thick rimmed glasses, a gentle smile in his eyes. She read the plaque of the photo: GAFUR AHMED SIDDIQUI, Central Committee Member of Badi Masjid, Bhopal.

This man is her grandfather. The man her mother Zoya came to Bhopal in search for. And after a long and heart breaking search, Ammi found him. Shortly after Abbu's father was murdered.

Sanam's body jolted involuntarily, having goosebumps all over.

Abbu and Ammi didn't die in an accident.

They were murdered.

Right after her grandfather, and her Phuphi Najma. Oh God! How will she tell Haya what she has learnt in the last 6 hours?

They were murdered by Tanveer.

Sanam felt dizzy and sat back unsteadily, bending her head low between her knees.

Tanveer wanted to separate her parents and marry Abbu herself... all for the love of wealth and status.

After murdering them all, she set the house on fire. And she lost her own twin Seher in the fire too...

A wave of nausea assailed her and she collapsed to the floor, wretched tears burning her eyes, ran down her face in mourning. She and Haya wondered all through their childhood about their family and where they came from, always frustrated when Badi Ammi told very little.

Now, Sanam discovered her Ammi had a cousin, her Uncle Haider who married her stepaunt Humeira , who lived in Dubai, with two sons. Suddenly she had so much family! But all hidden, because her parents' murderer was THE rich and powerful widow of the Nawaab of Bhopal.

Badi Ammi had come to see Begum Sahiba and came face to face with the murderer of her whole family! And had another heart attack right there...

Ya Allah! What am I to do now?

I can't go back to that house now!

Aahil...!

The sudden need to see him floored her, to be safe with him, away from all this horrible revelations.

Suddenly, the lock turned and the door opened. At the entrance stood a good looking older man and petite woman, they were both stunned in surprise and smiling with tears in their eyes.

"You must be Sanam... I am your Uncle Haider and this is your Aunt Humeira. Ya Allah, it feels like I found my Chutki again," he said as he gathered a shaking Sanam into his embrace.

Aahil sat obediently by Badi Ammi's bedside, feeling like a chastened school boy; as the older woman looked him over like a cut of meat at the marketplace. It made him uncomfortable, the felling that someone might not find him suitable for their daughter. The thought made him frown, he was the Nawaab of Bhopal after all!! She should be so lucky, he thought indignantly.

"Do you care about Sanam?" she asked directly.

Aahil gaped and gulped. Beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, despite the cold air-conditioning of the CCU.

"I don't care that you are the Nawaab of Bhopal. I want to know if my Sanam's husband cares for her." Dilshaad sternly prodded him.

"Um, Ba.. Badi Ammi, I'm not sure if you know the circumstances of our marriage..." and Dilshaad cut him off.

"I now know everything. But I wonder if YOU know everything!?" Dilshaad stared at him intently.

Aahil felt like getting up and leaving. Instead, he pulled at his collar and said, "Ammi said she was paid to marry me. A contract marriage...?" he wavered, hoping the older woman wouldn't throw a shoe at him.

"Wrong, boy! It was because of me. I had a heart attack and Sanam was helpless for money, she had no choice! " Dilshaad broke into sobs. Aahil was shocked, suddenly Sanam's righteous anger at his mean insults and snide remarks made a lot of sense. Sanam had always behaved with dignity since the wedding, and he thought her a gold digger, after his money! Flirting with Rehan, and dumping him for a richer man!

"But, couldn't she just have asked? Why was marrying me the only way?" he asked, sitting forward.

But Badi Ammi had her own questions.

"How well do you know your stepmother?" she asked, looking intently into his eyes, watching his response carefully.

"Huhh? What has Ammi got to do with this? I know my Ammi very well! She's an angel sent just for me, I'd die for her! " he said vehemently, bristling at the question.

Dilshaad harrumphed and snorted a derisive laugh. What a spell Tanveer has caught this young man in! But she had to make a dent in it.

"Beta, your Ammi came up to Sanam and offered her the money for my surgery. And in return, she made Sanam agree to marry you, no other option was given," she spoke quietly. " I never wanted to be a burden to Sanam, she has been taking care of everything from a very young age. But she decided to marry you, because of me."

Aahil almost fell off his chair.

Oh God! What a mess !

"I'll ask you again. How well do you know your Ammi? Would an angel do this to an innocent, desperate girl?" Dilshad pressed.

Aahil frowned. I don't like where this is going. He stood up intending to leave.No one had the right to speak ill of his Ammi. I won't put up with it. Not after all she's done for me.

"Your Ammi is not what you think she is. I know her better than you. Your mother stayed at my house as a child and ate with my children. She grew up with my children and had a place in my heart," Dilshaad spoke in a low voice.

Aahil stared at her blankly, belatedly discovering that he knew absolutelynothing about Ammi's past. He felt the ground under his feet shaking.

"She came back into our lives as a young woman bent on marrying my rich son. We survived her schemes, but she came and destroyed my family, FOREVER!!"

Aahil stood up abruptly, "Stop this. What are you saying!? I don't want to hear all this. Look, I've been polite, now you must just stop. Just stop.!"

Diishaad sat up suddenly and grabbed his hands, "Son! She murdered Sanam's parents!!!"

Aahil flung off her hands and swayed backwards. Hands over his ears, he ran out of the CCU and into a waiting Rehan. He pushed Rehan away and ran to his car, and drove away, like the devil was chasing him.
