Chapter Two: Meeting the Family
~Zoya's POV~
Sitting on the bed, a veil covering my face, I begin to remember the events that took place not too long ago. Hugging my sisters, I cried and cried until there were no tears left. How do people do it? Leave their family just like that and enter a new phase of their lives so smoothly?
The sound of the door opening breaks me from my thoughts. Two people, who I believe are Rehaan's younger brother and sister enter and sit next to me. Who am I kidding? They practically jump on the bed.
Lifting my veil to see them properly, I smile. They're so similar to me, I'm sure we'll get along just fine.
"
Bhabhi! How are you? Are you excited? Nervous? Happy? Angry? Sad?" Haya goes off with one question after another.
"Haya! We're practically strangers to her and there you start. First let's introduce ourselves and then talk as much as you want." Haider scolds her.
I begin to laugh at the scene.
"
Bhabhi? Are you okay?" Haider turns to his sister. "See Haya! Now she thinks we're crazy. I told you to control yourself for like two minutes. She's gonna think she's in a circus, where jokers like us live." He shakes his head.
At this, I begin to laugh uncontrollably. Haider takes this as a sign to leave. He grabs Haya's hand and makes his way to leave, but I manage to pull my sister-in-law's hand. I try to stop laughing, but now the image of the two as clowns pops in my head and I can't control myself.
"Oh-okay. Sorry about that. It's just..." I let out a little giggle. There, now I'm not going to laugh anymore. "Phew. I'm done, I promise. You two remind me so much of the things my younger sister, Humeira, and I asked our
Jiju, when he got married to my older sister. Before we let him go to our
Aapi, Humeira and I made him stand in the middle of the room, while we circled him. We asked him so many stupid questions with a straight face." I chuckle at the memory.
Poor
Jiju! He looked like he was going to pass out by the time Humeira and I let him go.
Haider, Haya, and Rehaan were laughing their hearts out by the end of my story-telling session. Wait...Rehaan? When did he come? My eyes met his, and I looked away, embarrassed.
Stupid! Aapi told you not to talk so much and look what you did! You truly can't keep your mouth shut Zoya. "Hey? Why'd you stop talking? Come on! I'm sure you have some more stories to tell us!" Haider cheered me on.
I blushed. I never had a shortage of stories, but right now I had to physically restrain myself from presenting a
shayari.
"
Arz kiya hai!" The three people in the room grinned; surprise along with excitement was written on their face.
No! Zoya, what are you doing? Stop...right...now And of course, my inner poet won.
"Stories and poems, I have plenty to share,
Stories and poems, I have plenty to share,
It just depends on how long you can go without pulling your hair." By now, I was standing on the bed, bowing. In my bridal dress. "Thank you, thank you."
Realization of what I just did hit me. Cringing, I sit on the bed. By now my cheeks were on fire.
"Wow
Bhabhi! I must say that I did not expect that at all." Haider teases me. Haya and Rehaan stare at me, obviously stunned.
"Shuttup. As if I didn't just embarrass myself." I mumble, cursing Haider and myself in my head.
"Did you say something Zoya?" By now Rehaan had an amused look on his face.
"N-no? Okay I'm going to go change now." I mentally give myself a pat on the back for thinking of an excuse so quickly.
"But
Bhabhiii" Haya whined. "We didn't even get to formally introduce ourselves! We've been talking for so long, and you probably don't even know my name!"
"Looks like you guys don't know me well, but it's okay." I turn towards Haider, "I know you're Haider and you're Haya. Do you really think that I wouldn't get a background check done on you guys before getting married into this house? I know your colleges, best friends, where they live, where you guys hang out..."
"Okay that's enough. Wow
Bhaijaan. That's some wife you've got there. " Haider nervously chuckles. "Um we'll be leaving now." He pulls his younger sister with him. "Have a good night Rehaan
Bhaijaan and Zoya
Bhabhi" he says in a teasing tone.
Haya elbows him in the stomach, while Rehaan glares at him. Haider giggles like a two year old and runs out.
"You know sometimes I really want to punch Haider. But then I would have to take him to hospital and take care of him, so I think we're better off without the violence." Rehaan smiles as I let out a giggle. "Anyways Zoya, you go change and I'll remove the decorations."
I'm handed a cup as soon as I get out of the bathroom.
"Here, Zoya. It's your favorite coffee."
I accept the cup with a question arising in my mind. Dismissing my thoughts, I take a sip, expecting a different taste for once.
"Rehaan? How'd you know this was my favorite coffee? Only
Aapi makes it like this!" I was left stunned at how he got every quantity right.
I look up at Rehaan for answers. "Well...um...a few days before our
nikhah, I called Zeenat
Aapi and asked about your likes and dislikes. She told me that I have to get every ingredient right or then...um..." He sheepishly said, pausing towards the end.
"What Rehaan? What did she say?" I was curious to see what lies my older sister told him.
"These are her words okay? Not mine at all." He closed his eyes and took a deep breath as if he was scared of me. "
Aapi said that if its not perfect, then may
Allah save me and my soul, because they're not going to be spared by you."
Rehaan opened one eye to see my reaction and immediately closed it again.
"EXCUSE ME? Am I some devil that I won't spare your soul? It's a wonder that you didn't run away from the wedding. I have the best sister in the world!" Sarcasm oozes out of each and every word. "She, herself, told me to stay well-behaved while she goes and lies to you? I'm going to get her for this. She needs to watch her back!" I rant on and on, before realizing that I should probably shut up now.
"No, no go on. Honestly speaking, I don't talk a lot, but I love talkative people." Rehaan says after noticing my silence. "I'm glad to see that this...uh...situation..." He turns to the decoration all over the bed. "...isn't awkward at all. You aren't like those who pretend like they're someone else in front of strangers. And I like that. I'm sure you'll adjust quickly."
I smile at the man in front of me. I always had full trust on my older sister's choice, but now I know for sure that Rehaan is a great guy. He'll do whatever he can to keep me and his siblings happy.
"Well I, for one, am glad. I talk a LOT and it's good to know that you can tolerate me. It would have been a problem if you were that type. You know? The ones who are angry all the time and arrogant?
Ya Allah! I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate those types of people!"
It was just in my nature to personally find ways to trouble those stuck-up guys, and unfortunately for me, I ended up crossing paths with quite a few of them.
Rehaan questioned why this was so and I explained. He laughed silently during my explanation.
"Okay let's start from the beginning. Now that you're my wife, I want to make sure that I know everything about you." He held out his hand. "Hi, I'm Rehaan Raza Ibrahim."
"Wow you really took this seriously." I let out a giggle. "Hi, I'm Zoya Farooqui...um Zoya Ibrahim now?"
"It completely depends on whichever you're comfortable with. I don't mind you using Farooqui at all."
"Okay then" I shake Rehaan's hand and smile. "I'm Zoya Farooqui."
And that's how I spent my wedding night; with a cup of coffee, and a ton of talking.
