Chapter Three: Adjusting to Changes
~Zoya's POV~
***The Morning After the Wedding***
I woke up and looked at my phone I check the time. I saw a ray of sunshine through the curtains; maybe it was a reasonable time to get up.
My eyes grew big after I finished yawning and stretching. Who would have thought that after marriage, I would change so much that I, Zoya Farooqui, would wake up at 6 am? And that too, by myself?
I thought about going back to sleep, but then I saw Rehaan sleeping on the sofa. He must have a job to go to and his siblings will probably go to their colleges. I guess I'll make breakfast for them since I won't be able to sleep anyways.
***An Hour Later***
After spending a lifetime looking through the drawers, I finally found everything I needed. I reached to the top cabinet and I felt something near my shoulder...
"BOO!"
I screamed and jumped around as my hand knocked over the flour. The whole kitchen, along with Rehaan and my heads, were completely covered in flour.
As we shook it off, Haya walked in and grabbed an apple.
"Wow bro! Romancing in the morning too?"
"Was last night not enough guys? Geez!" Haider added in.
I looked at the two in shock. I mean I was used to Humeira's teasing, but that was just innocent stuff. These two...the things they're saying...last night... I felt my cheeks burn up in embarrassment.
Rehaan stiffens up at their words and glares at them. To remove the sudden tension in the air, I clear my throat and serve breakfast.
"Here Haya! Chocolate chip pancakes with fresh strawberries and maple syrup."
"And for Haider, here's blueberry muffins and a glass of milky coffee."
The siblings first look at each and then at me.
"
Bhabhi how did you know what Haider
Bhaijaan and I liked? We never told you and you haven't even been here for 24 hours..." Haya has a confused look on her face and it makes me giggle.
"Oh Rehaan told me last night." I blurt out without thinking.
Suddenly Haider becomes wide awake and interested. "See I told you something happened. " He whispers, loud enough for everyone to hear.
And the blood rushed to my cheeks.
"Haya! Haider! Why are you teasing her? Zoya prepared the breakfast with so much love and effort and instead of appreciating her, you're obsessed with these useless things."
After being scolded by Rehaan, they come towards me. Haya hugs me and apologizes, while complimenting the food. Haider does the same. Except along with a apology and compliment, he also mumbles, "How'd you captivate him so fast? He never defends me from Haya's teasing and today..."
"Okay! I think that's enough complimenting Haider." Rehaan says with a glare.
Haider immediately backs up, putting his hands up in surrender.
"Fine, fine. I'm just curious. Gosh."
"Don't you two have college to go to? And Rehaan? Don't you have office?"
"Yeah, yeah but we're all ditching today." Haider states proudly.
"Oh you guys don't have to do that for me. I can manage in the house and try to figure everything out. Your education and career are far more important."
"Oh
Bhabhi, by all he means the whole world's taking a day off."
Whole world? Is today some international festival or something?
I must have asked that out loud because Rehaan replied; "Well kinda. Let's just say it's International Don't Go To Work/School Day." He sat down and winked at his siblings when he thought I wasn't looking.
Was I missing something? I've been working for nearly 2 years and I've never heard of this day.
"Ugh
Bhabhi you sound so sleep deprived." I pout at this. "Check what day of the week it is. "
And then it hits me. Today's Sunday! I facepalm. How could I be so stupid and keep questioning them like an idiot? I've been here 15 hours and I've already been embarrassed more than 3 times.
"Yeah I think you're right Haider. I'll go take a quick nap or something." I try to walk away from the situation.
"Wait Zoya! Before you go, I just wanted to tell you Dilshaad Aunty has invited all four of us for lunch tomorrow. Should...I tell her we can come?" He asks with some hesitation. As if I would say no to spending time with an nice lady like Dilshaad.
"Of course Rehaan! You don't even need to ask for these things!" A phone call interrupts our conversation. "Excuse me for just a minute."
"Yeah Aasma? Is everything alright?" I can note the tension in her voice while she's asking when I'll be back. Because of my wedding, I had taken a vacation from work for three weeks. I would have taken a month off, but my presence was crucial for an important project.
"Zoya ma'am since you've just gotten married, everyone thought it would be wiser to tell you later, but...I think later will be too late."
"What are you saying Aasma? Just say it clearly."
"While you were gone, our company
faced some issues, which are unknown to all the employees. Since we weren't in a good condition, the owner of a huge company bought ours and let go some of the older employees. Unfortunately, y-you have been terminated. I'm so sorry Zoya ma'am! I really am!"
My world came crashing down. My career had been the most important thing in my life. It gave me independence, a sense of responsibility, and mostly, a bit of freedom.
I try to control the anger in my voice "Exactly which company is this? And who's the owner?"
"Ma'am it's Khan Industries. It's renowned for its success, but the owner is infamous for his temper and serious attitude." Aasma begins to whisper the next part as if someone will hear her. "I heard that no one's ever seen him smile or laugh."
"Where are you right now?"
"Zoya ma'am I'm at home. Today's Sunday right?"
"Aasma," I say sweetly "Then why are you whispering as if that grumpy, arrogant jerk is going to walk in and catch you saying stuff about him?" I scold her sternly.
She's a great assistant, but sometimes she's just clueless.
"Just you wait Aasma. Soon you will be my assistant again. He may think he's king of the world or whatever, but my name is Zoya Farooqui. I'll make him give me my job back. Take my word for it. Thanks for telling me. Good bye."
I end the call and turn around. I totally forgot that the whole Ibrahim family was sitting there!
Haider opened his mouth to make a smart remark, but Rehaan shut him down immediately.
"What happened Zoya? Why do you look so tensed?"
I told him everything Aasma just told me.
"If you want to go to his office right now, we could. I'm sure since he bought the new company recently, he would be working today." Rehaan offered.
"No, no. It's okay. I'll manage. I know how to deal with such egoistic people." I clenched my fists in anger. This man was going to get a piece of my mind.
"I'm sorry Rehaan. I really wanted to spend the day with you guys, but I have to go teach this guy a lesson."
"Woah whoa whoa. What do you mean 'a lesson'? Zoya don't do anything you might regret later on."
"Trust me. The only person who will regret anything will be that jerk." I say with a smirk, as a plan forms in my head.
Let's see how he refuses to hire me.
Mr. Khan get ready. Now you'll know the consequences of messing with Zoya Farooqui.
A/N: Sorry for the long wait! Thank you for waiting so patiently! I know I said the update would be longer than usual, but GUYS ASAD AHMED KHAN WILL BE IN THE NEXT CHAPTER! To make the confrontation more dramatic, I don't think it would have been justified if the scene was forced into this chapter. Hopefully I'll try to update the next chapter before school starts (which is exactly in a week). I'm sorry for any and every mistake. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed!
Btw do you think Ayaan should be a character in this story? Or will it be confusing with too many people?
