Chapter 4

The sky booms outside--loud with thunder and the rain drops starts to spill more heavily against the glass window.
Sanam hears the tapping noise that arises from the rain falling across the roof. Yet nothing could distract her eyes that remained arrested by the black intense orbs infront. Time froze.
The black pupils bored deep inside, so powerful was their glance that for a moment Sanam could hardly realise what was happening, neither she had the slightest inkling of what meaning it held. A while later that felt like hours but was hardly more than a few second, Sanam felt a warmth and saw him wrapping the shawl around her. The lightning hit again and Sanam felt a treable run through her veins, it wasn't at the loud crackle outside, but because of the queer jolt that she felt inside her heart.

Taking a deep breathe she closed her eyes and when she opened them again Sanam found Aahil standing against the window with his tall body leaning against the window pane and his right hand holding a glass.

Wine..

Sanam sighed. Aahil was known to have drinks whenever he was nt doing work. He was nt a man to sit idly. Conversation was a gift he was known to have little !
How would then Sanam hope for anything else?
She heaved a sigh again and averted her eyes. She still couldnt fathom why it bothered her so much to see him so lonely at times. She had her own set of problems to deal with anyway! And what could a servant like her statur could do? Nothing. So better if she keeps minding her own buisness.

How was Dilshad and Haya--what were they doing now-she closed her eyes and her mind wandered.

***********

Scene change

Her beautifully carved eyes stare at the screen of her phone, the shock and terror that reflects from her face could make anyone shook.

As the video keeps playing in front her wide fearful gaze, she gasps. The phone drops from her hand and she bents her legs and falls down. A terrible sound of pain and repentance escapes her mouth as she breaks down and begins to shed piteous tears.

Slowly Nida raises her head and her tear stricken eyes stop at the phone lying a foot away. She stares at it immobilized. The words echo inside her head and her face contorts. She stands up with a chin that's now firm and hard.

"I have to do this--I'm so sorry! But I've no choice. I have to. I must! " the words sound like a feeble plea and Nida pulls her bag and picking her phone from the floor she marches towards the door. It was a long day for her and she still had a long long way to go!

*********

Scene change-

She was far away in her thoughts quite immersed in her own little world until she heard him say, " rain has hold up. It's best if we start now." Sanam jolted out of her reverie and turned her eyes.
Aahil was nt looking at her. He was keeping the bottle back on the wooden cabinet.

Sanam rose from her seat immediately as she heard the words, she took her step forward. "Stop" she froze at the spot nt daring to move.

"Has she done something wrong again? Or was she supposed to say something? Allah--!" Fumbling she miserably stared unable to remember what wrong she had committed. She was about to say something when Sanam shut her mouth again.
"sit down" Aahil asked her with his imploring voice. The tone was rather gentle though. Baffled Sanam stared at his face as she sank into her seat once more and saw him kneel before her. Then before Sanam could understand what was happening, he reached out his hand and pressed on her ankle. And it is then that Sanam saw the wound on her leg. A deep gash at the back of her feet and blood potruding from the cut in small drops. As Aahil touched the cut with the damp cotton in his hand which Sanam had no idea where he had found, a sharp pain went through her body. Instantly Sanam realised the depth of the wound, she stifled momentarily but relaxed as the pain slowly subsided.

Sanam watched with mute amazement as he went away and returned again, and began to apply an ointment. "There's no bandage here. " he paused and Sanam for the first time in a long time managed to speak but her voice was unusually low and it faltered "it-its ok. I can manage." Aahil didn't respond, he vaguely looked at her and then stood up. Sanam too rose and followed him-limping slightly. They didnt talk after that. Moreover there was hardly anything to talk about.

However on their way back an uncomfortable silence hung between them that none of them could ignore. But sitting beside him Sanam felt an unnatural ease that surprised even her. Though it made her inwardly happy nonetheless.

It was around 11 at night when they reached home. Aahil headed straight for the stairs, nt for a second did he glance her way. Sanam thought many times to speak, break the ice between them but with no avail. Morosely she went to her room and was surprised to see Latif there sitting on the bed with a bandage and a pot with hot water in his hand. "what's that for? " Sanam asked him innocently. "its for your wound! Come sit here... Let me wash then i'll do the bandage." Sanam was taken aback. "who told you? How did you--" Latif gave a wide knowing smile. "Aahil bhay--who else ? He asked me to clean it and do the dressing. " as Sanam sat at the foot of the bed Latif gave her a proud smile, "didnt i tell you-dnt judge him by his outer shell-he is gem of a guy! You'll only know once you see him close-and of course with a better mind! You always seem to be on the attack mode with Aahil bhay!" he finished with a grimace. Sanam said nothing. She didnt try to object or redicule him. Herself she was lost for words.
"Wasn't what happened at the guesthouse enough for the day that another surprise stood awaiting ? The hot bowl and the bandage Latif had brought was instructed by him? It's Aahil ? He asked Latif to check on her wound? Is the world still revolving around the Sun or has anything gone out the way that he was behaving so unlike him ? " Sanam couldn't understand what so so drastic had happened that none but Aahil Raza Ibrahim was behaving so odd ! She would have wondered for hours to rake the answer in her mind but had to break her musing when Latif's dramatic tone penetrated her ear drums and still nt recovered from the shock she turned her eyes on him.

"Oui maa! I forgot! I've to dash to the kitchen and cook some special dishes for-" Sanam shot up her eyes glazing at him when he stopped and added again, with less dramatic air this time -"oh how lucky you are! Now you get to have an off since you do those light stuff--and here i've to rot in that--" Latiff broke off and gave a sniff. Sanam glared at him and rolled her eyes. "Latif i'm nt here to have meals for free! I work-I get paid. I dn't leave my work on any excuse! Ok ?
Now Just tell me what to cook ?" she stared at Latif with a straight face and waited. Though the sharp pang on her right foot felt unbearable to stand but Sanam put her best efforts to ignore it.

Latif grinned graciously "oh thank you ! You have no idea how tired i'm! I didnt even get time to fix my make-"he abruptly paused at Sanam's glare and his face fell. "fruit cake-Shahi paneer-Mexican fruit salad--shahi Korma-Ice cream. Thats it." Sanam's mouth fell open. "I thought everybody was over with dinner-- "they have!" Her eyes further widened ,"then whoz this all for ?" "Aahil ?-but i already cooked before I left--"

"uffo ho..matirma duffer-dnt you know who else is here? Course our would be begum-Nida -who else? " the name spurred a sudden wave of emotion Sanam herself could nt quite follow, nor did she try to. With already so much to deal with She did nt have the strength or desire to ponder on anything else.
Hence leaving a sigh, wondering how a single human can eat so much, she walked to the kitchen.

It was almost 3a.m. at night when Sanam woke up with a start. There was a loud sound of something crushing. Sanam flung her dupatta around her shoulders and ran towards the west corridor.

She stopped once she reached the farthest door.

The door was ajar !

Had she confused the sound? No. She was sure it came from here--but why had Rehan kept the door open? And what was he doing up so late? And most importantly, what that lound sound was ?

Other than Sanam one more person had heard it too.

And that was Aahil.

**********

He was staring sleeplessly at the ceiling when he heard the breaking noise and sat upright on his bed.

Brows knitted he thought for a second and then he grabbed the remote switch and dashed out his bed.

Almost at the same time there was a movement near the entrance door.

There was a soft sound of keys and the door was pulled open and silently a shadow walked outside in the lawn and vanished into the darkness...!
