Yes Boss: Part 14
"Anu, you have no idea how much a miss you. It's only been half a day, but I swear I cannot take this Vijay fellow for even a second longer," Zoya complained as she twirled her noodles on her fork absentmindedly at lunch the following day. Anu and Monica burst into laughter at her complaint, making Zoya pout unhappily.
"Zoya, Vijay is... a strange man. Trust me, I've been here forever, and I've never seen anyone stranger than Vijay walk through the doors. Even that strange immigration officer of yours is less strange than Vijay," Monica piped in, making Zoya smile a little when she realized that the girls were still on her side.
"Yeah, when I was told that your stuff was being moved to Vijay's cabin, I immediately started a small prayer in my head, for your safety," Anu added on, nodding sadly as she reached for Zoya's hand and squeezed it for comfort. Zoya sighed softly and placed her hand on top of Anu's.
"He refuses to even speak to me! How am I supposed to be acquainted to the ways of the technical department this way? So I tried to figure things out on my own, like when he switched on his laptop I tried to sneak a peek at his screen. But then you know what happened guys? After he'd put in his password, he noticed that I was watching. So he gruffly turned his laptop towards me, went to account settings, clicked on change password, and then smiled evilly at me, I SWEAR IT WAS AN EVIL SMILE, before turning the screen away from me completely, furiously typing in a new password. What an idiot. I suppose despite the fact that he is into IT himself, it didn't cross his mind that a fellow IT person may just be able to hack into his account anyway? Bada aaya password change karne ke liye. Ullu ka patha saala," Zoya continued ranting, earning a fresh round of laughter from the two girls.
"He seriously doesn't say anything to you? He just keeps ignoring you?" Monica asked, still a little shocked at the extent of Vijay's rudeness despite the fact that she already knew how strange he was. Zoya shook her head vigorously, confusing her further.
"Oh of course not, he did speak to me yesterday right after I'd moved into the cabin. You know what he told me? He told me the whole office was gossiping about my relationship with Mr Khan. Apparently everyone thinks something is going on between us. What rubbish! If that were true, you guys would've definitely told me by now. What does that idiot think; I don't have any friends in the office?" Zoya answered, her voice becoming louder at each word. Anu and Monica shared a quick look, guilt washing them over. Zoya frowned as she noted the look, and the unearthly silence instead of laughter.
"Anu, Monica, is there something you guys want to tell me?" Zoya asked in a painfully slow manner, using her fork to stab the chicken on her plate, making some of the noodles fly onto the table. Monica stared at Anu pleadingly, as Anu nodded and swallowed nervously.
"Uh, Zoya, woh kya hai na, we didn't want you do be upset. But yes it is true, sab aap dono ke baare mein baat kar rahe hai. Woh kya hai na, you guys come to and leave work together, so everyone just assumed..." Anu tried to explain, biting her lower lip as Zoya's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Allah miyan, what's wrong with everyone! Vijay ne bhi yehi kaha tha, that I take the car with Mr Khan so that means unke saath mera kuch chakkar hai. Arre! Yeh kya baat hui! Ek baar mujhe pooch to lete! Yes, I take his car, but that's because I stay in his house! It'd be really stupid if I took a different vehicle from him despite travelling from the same place," Zoya explained, rolling her eyes as if it was the most obvious thing on earth. Anu and Monica shared another look, this time of shock. But Zoya missed this altogether, not realizing that her explanation didn't make things look any better after all.
"Accha okay woh sab chodo, aaj se aap dono mujhse kuch bhi chupaayenge nahi alright? Now tell me, aur kya kya baat kar rahe the sab mere aur Mr Khan ke baare mein?" Zoya asked casually, rolling herself another fork of noodles and stuffing it into her mouth, completely oblivious to the fact that Anu and Monica wore looks of utter confusion on their faces.
"Um, people are also talking about your attire..." Anu began to explain, making Zoya drop her fork in surprise, as she looked herself up and down on her chair. She looked up again, about to make her case when Monica cut in.
"Nahi nahi, Anu doesn't mean that your attire is ugly or anything, it's just that sab yahan office wear pehente hai na? Only you dress so casually in jeans, yet Mr Khan doesn't say anything to you," Monica clarified, making the creases from Zoya's forehead disappear as she looked around and noticed that Monica was right. She nodded, admitting defeat to that allegation.
"You're right. I do stand out for dressing this casually. I think Mr Khan didn't say anything because this discussion about my attire has been going on since the time I started staying at his house," Zoya explained laughingly as she finished up the last bit of food on her plate. Anu and Monica now gaped openly at her, still unable to understand the dynamics of her relationship with Asad. If anything, this conversation with Zoya had made them even more confused.
"Okay thanks guys. I think I know what to do now. For now, I need to get back to work. As in, get back to the cabin and find a way to deal with Vijay. See you later, guys!" Zoya stated cheerfully as she stood up from the table and walked away, leaving Anu and Monica to shrug at each other behind her back. It seemed easier to just give up on figuring Zoya out.
Hours later, Zoya found herself marching up to Asad's cabin. She had spent the entire afternoon trying to make progress with Vijay, yet nothing seemed to work. At five, he got up and left again, this time without even telling her. She had to speak to Asad about this. Maybe Asad would be able to set the guy straight.
"Mr Khan!" Zoya announced her arrival, pushing open his cabin door without warning. Asad dropped the miniature tree that he was holding in his hand, his elbow nearly knocking over the rest of the model that rest proudly on a table in the centre of his cabin. Asad glared at her after salvaging the model just in time, bending to pick up the tree. Zoya watched Asad's muscles strain against his shirt, especially at his upper arms where his sleeves were rolled up till.
"Miss Farooqui, main aapko kitni baar keh chuka hoon. Andar aane se pehle knock kiya karo! If anything had happened to this model... I'd have had to spend my entire weekend here, trying to fix it. Khuda ka lakh lakh shukr hai ke kuch nahi hua. Now I'll just put finishing touches on it on Monday, before we present it to Miss Narges and Mrs RK on Tuesday," Asad explained proudly, as he placed the miniature tree back in place before taking a few steps back, crossing his arms across his chest as he admired his work. Zoya stood next to him, staring at the model of the mall in awe.
"Not bad Mr Khan, it looks beautiful! It looks like a lot of hard work, all the cutting and gluing must be done to precision!" Zoya complimented, as she leaned in to inspect the model. She felt Asad's warm hands land on her shoulders as he pulled her back gruffly.
"Not too close Miss Farooqui, aapka koi bharosa nahi," Asad said, half in jest and half in seriousness, as Zoya rolled her eyes at him. He walked over to his chair as he unrolled his sleeves, and then proceeded to pick up his coat.
"Mr Khan, mujhe aapse kuch zaroori baat karni hai," Zoya told him, as she followed behind him. He nodded, but continued to put on his coat and rearrange some things on his desk, not giving her much attention at all. He picked up his laptop and put it into his bag.
"Raaste mein baat karte hai, let's go to the car," Asad decided, as he held Zoya's upper arm gently, guiding her towards the door. As soon as they walked out of the cabin, Zoya noticed some employee of Asad's who was walking by, turn and give them a second look. She quickly shrugged Asad's grip off of her arm.
"Mujhe iss baare mein bhi baat karni hai!" Zoya whined, pointing at her arm and then his hand. Asad stared at her strangely. But then he just shrugged and continued walking to the car anyway, Zoya scurrying behind him quickly, as she tried to ignore the obvious stares from everyone as they walked out. How is it that she'd never noticed this before?
