Chapter One
Ayaat entered her new workplace with a heavy heart; she had broken her promise to her mother. She walked towards the office unsure of what she was about to do, something was pulling her back; she had to talk to her mother. Her phone battery had died so suddenly, Ayaat couldn't hear what her mother was saying before the line went dead. She shook her head in a no, maybe it was nothing.
'Hi, Ayaat Zoya Khan' She said proudly to the googly eyed receptionist. She wore her best smile as she looked on waiting for the receptionist to respond.
'Placement?' The lady looked up from her computer pushing her specs back in place.
'Yeah' Ayaat smiled nervously, the lady gave her a reassuring nod.
'First floor sweetie, wait in the lobby. Briefing doesn't start until another half an hour. There's refreshments available' She told her. Zoya turned around to go, 'Good luck' she heard her say with uncertainty, Ayaat turned around slowly and stared at the woman.
'Ermm thanks?' Ayaat walked off, pressing her temples as she climbed up the stairs. She strolled down the corridor in awe as she admired the art work against the walls. It's as if they were moulded into the wall; a lot of effort went into creating this piece thought Ayaat. Her eyes sparkled as she took in the splash of colours that were painted bringing the whole corridor to life. Her eyes went over the bold writing, as a part of her reacted in an unusual way at the familiarity of those words; DZ CONNECT : Feel beautiful, sound beautiful, look beautiful! Fashion isn't impressing your Jahapana, or looking like his Kaneez, Fashion is looking in the mirror and admiring the curve on your face!'
She stopped on her tracks when she noticed a huge frame covered with a piece of red cloth. The wind blew the edges; she caught a glimpse of the woman in the picture. She took her hand forward to remove the covering,
'Can I help you?' Ayaat shot upright as the sharpness of the voice reached her ears. She slowly turned around to find a young male standing there with the darkest of eyes looking down at her. She gulped as she took in his appearance, brownish hair waxed into place, he had a three piece grey suit on his handsomely built body, and his hands rested in his pockets. He looked so sharp; she swore it would've cut her to pieces. She peeked at his face as he stood there emotionless wearing a straight line where his smile was supposed to appear. She watched his eyebrows make a funny shape, one went up as a little smirk played on his lips; he was enjoying his overpowering presence. She met his eyes trying to push back her nerves,
'Don't.touch.anything' He growled quietly.
'I didn't touch-' He walked off before she could complete her sentence. Ayaat slouched her shoulders breathing out a sigh; jerk.
'Mr Khan, your wife is out of danger' Spoke the doctor, putting his hand over Asad's distraught shoulders. 'She has lost a lot of blood...' Asad's tired eyes widened further, 'Don't worry, she'll be fine. Have faith' Asad watched the doctor's retreating figure. Faith is what I have been holding onto all these years doctor, faith is what could never take her away from me. She was meant to get better, for me because I didn't let go...
He slipped his hand inside his pocket and took out the letter.
'And if we ever meet' He read, 'We'll understand that Allah wants to give us another chance' He smiled as tears formed in his eyes. I've found you Zoya, we met. I didn't come after you; God has brought you to me. I will never let you go.
He slowly stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him. He looked up at her pale face; she looked so peaceful. He admired how beautiful she looked, the 18 years showing on her face no doubt but her beauty hadn't decreased in any way. He took small steps towards her, not rushing with the fear of her vanishing. He sat on the stool beside her as he took her hands into his, his fingers stroked the ring on her finger; symbol of their love, their union.
'I love you Zoya...' He whispered taking her hand to his cheek. 'So so much. You have no idea how I spent these years without you. Your presence has brought my living corpse to life-' Zoya's body shook. Asad looked up at her as she breathed harshly into the oxygen mask. She tried speaking in her unconscious state...
'Aaa' Her voice was faint. Asad's hand rubbed over her forehead as he yelled for a doctor. The doctors and nurses rushed inside,
'Aya... Ayaat... Ayaat' Zoya repeated in a faint whisper,
'Who's Ayaat?' Asked the doctor, Asad shrugged his shoulders helplessly.
'I... Waant... Ayaat' Zoya spoke again. The nurses pushed Asad out of the room,
'Get Ayaat as soon as possible' He heard the doctor order in the background. Asad looked around himself helplessly; where would he find this thing, no this person. He rubbed his hands over his face, he looked at his reflection on the steel rails; his hair all messy, his tie sat in a disoriented position, and his blood stained shirt had seen better days.
Asad took out his phone, he scrolled to his ammi's name on his contact list. His finger lingered on it for a moment before he shut it close. Asad closed his eyes before marching towards the receptionist.
'Hi, my wi- that woman I brought in before...' He started as he tensed his body; he peeked at the nurse that attended him before who was standing far on the other side of the corridor. 'Yeah that one, does she have an emergency contact number registered? Family, friends? Someone I could call to inform of her condition' He spoke in a sincere tone, pleading with his eyes for her to help him out. The nurse looked at her file,
'Yes, her neighbour. Mrs Haleem, her number is...' She recited the address and the number whilst Asad noted it down on his phone.
'Thank you' He smiled before calling the number.
'Hello?'
Ayaat watched from the corner of her eyes as her phone flashed a numerous times. She had managed to find a socket to plug in her charger, however, it was a bad idea as her eyes failed to concentrate on anything else other than her phone. She sat in an uncomfortable position, crossing and un-crossing her legs as she cringed with agitation.
'I expect you all to behave according...' The boss's voice drowned in the background as she lost herself in her own thoughts. She stared him up and down at his egoistic posture; Ayaat rolled her eyes as she remembered the encounter few moments ago.
'Ayaaat, phone-' the receptionist froze on the spot with one foot in the air when his hand shot up to stop her. He half turned his body,
'What did I say about disturbing me Alaina? How dare-'
'Emergency si-' Alaina took another step and froze again watching his deadly eyes focus on her, his expressions went from scary to scarier. She gulped whilst Ayaat jumped up and ran towards her.
'Miss Khan go back to your seat' Ordered Zain. Ayaat stared at his back in disbelief,
'But sir...'
'Your mother is in hospital' Spoke Alaina, not being able to keep it in any longer. Ayaat's heart dropped as she stumbled back a few steps.
'Leaveee.Alaina' He turned towards Ayaat, 'get back to your seat' His eyes widened before moving them towards her seat.
'I'm leaving!' She announced as she headed to pick up her things. She pulled the charger out of the socket in a hurry; the wire tore into two pieces. An unfocused Ayaat grabbed whatever was in her hand and dumped it inside her bag.
'You will not go anywhere until I say so...' He seethed,
'Everyone else can go' He said suddenly, calming his tone of voice. Ayaat flung around, shocked. Her eyes followed everyone out before landing on his face, her murderous eyes glared at him; slicing him in her head ten times over. She threw her handbag over her shoulder and headed for the door. With her eyes on the floor about to shed a million tears, she bumped into a wall like structure; she rebounded from the hit realising it was his rock solid body and fell back dazed. She scowled seeing him block her way.
'I said no-one leaves until I say so' He smirked.
'To hell with you' She yelled, half teary. She pushed past him before being pulled back with force and thrown against the wall. She squealed in pain as he leaned in towards her placing one hand against the wall over her shoulder,
'And no-one, and I mean no-one talks to me like that and gets away with it' He spoke scornfully. 'You walk away now, consider this job goneee' He whispered, threatening her.
'Move away from me' Her eyes widened, he moved in closer almost touching her face. Her breathing shortened as she felt suffocated, 'Only Mr Khan can throw me out' She said confidently remembering her interviewer's words. She tried moving from the other side but his other arm flew over her forcing her to fall back, she blinked with fear finding his arms caging her.
'And who am I?' He asked in a soothing tone.
'No-one' She spoke sarcastically, he punched the wall making her jump up slightly and brush her nose against his, her lips quivered as sweat glistened from the side of her face.
'HIS son, I own most of this empire' He told a white lie. He straightened up and fixed his tie.
'Consider yourself fired, don't ever show your hideous looking face here, Ever. Again.' He wiped his hand with a handkerchief before walking out of the room. Ayaat pushed herself forward; she shivered as tears overflowed from her eyes. She ran out of the office to get to her mother's side as she prayed earnestly for her mother's safety.
Asad stormed from one side of the corridor to the other; how heartless can people be? He had phoned Mrs Haleem to tell her about Zoya, however, before he could ask about Ayaat, she cut the line. So much for friends standing by you when you need them the most. Asad winced, how can he blame others when he himself couldn't fulfil the responsibilities of a husband. Asad pressed his forehead, what should he do now? He went against the glass window and peeked at Zoya's restless state. She hadn't stopped chanting this unknown figure's name. Asad suddenly turned around and ran out of the hospital, he would ask Mrs Haleem even if he had to get on his knees and beg her.
Ayaat rushed into the hospital and hit her hands against the desk at the main reception.
'Zoya... Zoya K-Khan... How is she? Where is she?' Her voice stammered, words almost refusing to come out.
'You're family?' The nurse asked before pointing towards the room.
Ayaat nodded and ran towards the room almost slipping on the marble floor. She banged the door open and fell at her mother's feet.
'How is she doctor? What happened? How did it happen?'
She walked around and placed her hand over her forehead. Zoya slowly opened her eyes and breathed out. A small smile formed on her lips as she tried lifting her hands.
'I want to lleaveee...' She whispered.
'Not in this state' Refused Ayaat trying to hold back her tears.
'Please doctor' Zoya whispered, 'I want to go home' She managed to say faintly. Ayaat stared into her mother's eyes; she was missing something. She looked up at the doctor,
'Please prepare for her discharge and an ambulance. I'm taking her home, now' She said sternly. The doctor nodded at her before asking the nurses to arrange everything.
'Here's the prescription, get those medicines as soon as possible. I'm sending nurses with you!' He said before leaving.
'Ammi' Ayaat stroked her hair back,
'You'll be fine angel' She pressed her eyes at her mother, Zoya looked above her with half open eyes. Her eyes pressed shut when she felt Ayaat's tears drop on to her cheeks. She wiped it quickly and placed a kiss on her forehead.
'I'm sorry, this is all my fault' She whispered. She felt Zoya's hand tighten over hers.
A stressed Asad sat in discomfort inside his SUV. He shivered as he thought about Zoya's state, praying he could find a way to get to Ayaat. Who is she and how is she connected to Zoya? Even in her unconscious state, that name is the only thing rolling off her tongue; what kind of a bond do they share he wondered. He rest his head back whilst stopping at the traffic lights feeling shattered that he couldn't find Mrs Haleem. He placed his Bluetooth into his ear once he realised there was a call coming through.
'Hello?'
'Mr Khan, just wanted to let you know we've discharged your wife so we-'
'WHAT?! Whaa, How, I mean when and why... Who got her discharged? Are you running a hospital or what? She was unconscious for goodness sake. How could you just let anyone come and take her away?' He fumed as his heart raced out of his body.
'Sir, she was her family' The nurse said nervously, 'whenever you have time could you come and sign some forms?' She asked anyways despite hearing his harsh breathing. Asad's nostrils flared as he seethed at their stupidity. He closed his eyes,
'Ohhh, sorry, do you know which home she took Zoya to? I'm sorry I forgot I sent someone to get her discharged and I have a few houses-'
'No no ofcourse, sir' The nurse said quickly, she gave him the address making Asad take a sharp U-Turn and drive back as fast as he could.
Is she okay?' Ayaat asked the nurse whilst gazing towards her sleeping mother. A lone tear trickled down the side of her face.
Yes, she'll be just fine madam' Replied the nurse, And you have a lovely home' She smiled widely admiring the room.
Yes, she will be' Ayaat repeated, and thank you, we made it together... with love' She watched as the nurse went to change the saline before staring at the prescription in her hand. She slowly stepped out of the room, looking around the living room and stepping towards their pictures. She whimpered as memories of their time together flashed before her eyes and the last moments before she stepped out of the house today.
You always tell me to take care of myself Ammi, but why don't you ever take care of yourself?' She touched her mother's face on the big portrait, This is all my fault na, I'm sorry. I promise I'll never break another promise; I will never hurt you again. Ma, I can't spend a moment without you, without your overprotecting shadow over me, without your blessed hands putting me to sleep. Please get well soon and come shout at me, throw stuff at me and mess everything up so that it irritates me' She begged in a low voice. She put her hands over her mouth and ran out of the house.
She ran as the wind blew against her hair, making it dance backwards in a frenzy. She furiously brushed the back of her hands over her face trying to get rid of her tears, but they were refusing to stop. She ran faster hoping the wind would calm her burning heart and relieve her of the day's worries. In her race to stop herself from drowning, she stumbled over a rock and went flying forward. She slammed herself against the oncoming figure as one hand went over his shoulder and the other around his stomach. The side of her face rest at the side of his chest whilst she hung on to dear life. The man's hand brushed over her hair protectively as he held her securely to stop her and himself from falling backwards. She felt an unusual sense of comfort from his hold, she tried looking up slowly.
Be careful beta' He said in a soothing tone, he held her shoulders helping her stand upright. He grew concerned seeing her shaking under his hold; he looked down at her face that was now covered with her long black hair. He slowly watched as the strands of hair blew itself upwards from her harsh breathing allowing him to see glimpses of her face.
Sorry... and thank you' She stepped backwards before running around him, Asad turned as his eyes followed her,
Careful' He shouted behind her. Asad turned around and walked a few steps ahead before turning on his feet, he felt something weird; her voice seemed so familiar... it almost sounded like Zoya, but that was impossible. Right? He shook his head in a no as he stared at her back running as fast as she could, he prayed silently for the girl to find peace and comfort. Asad brushed his hair back and headed towards Zoya's house.
Yes?' Asked the nurse opening the door to find an anxious Asad standing there with his head down. He looked up hearing her voice,
Zoya?' He asked looking into her eyes,
Who are you?' She questioned,
I'm her husband...' He replied stepping inside.
But she didn't say...' The nurse sounded confused, but then remembered seeing him at the hospital, Oh right, sorry sir. Come in...' She turned around and walked towards Zoya's room. A dazed Asad followed behind the nurse, watching her every step before entering her room. He watched her sleep, capturing her face in his eyes. He sat beside her, entwining his fingers with hers and taking it against his chest. Zoya slowly opened her eyes feeling her fingers get tangled, she moved her eyes from the ceiling to her side. She creased her forehead, quite taken aback seeing Asad sit by her side. She looked into his eyes; his intense gaze tore through her soul as she found her heartbeats go erratic, just like it used to eighteen years ago. A lone tear fell from the side of her face feeling his hand go over her head, un-creasing her forehead and forming a little smile on her face, she breathed out heavily sighing in contentment feeling a part of her relax in his presence. Asad placed his lips on her forehead, placing a soft kiss and lingering his lips on her skin not wanting to separate himself from her. She slowly gazed towards the door before looking back at Asad. She closed her eyes whilst his eyes opened wide as saucers...
