Chapter 14 - What have I done!!!!!
Asad Ahmed Khan was staring broodingly at the white envelope lying on his office's desk. It had been a month since he had parted ways with Zoya and had heard no news of her or the deal. In a way, he had been expecting to hear from her even if it was to tell him that the deal has not been finalized.
More than once, he had been tempted to call her under the pretext of wanting to know whether the deal was going to through or not. But he had stopped himself remembering their last meeting. She had been so cool throughout the whole encounter minus the farewell kiss. It had been a hell of a kiss. Nothing like they had shared before. It had contained so much passion and emotion that he had been left confused. So confused that he hadn't even tried to stop her when she had ran away from him.
Now, exactly twenty eight days later, she had sent him the papers as promised in a white envelope and Asad had been staring at it for the past hour, debating with himself whether he should open it or not.
If Zoya had succeeded in getting back his mansion, it would give him no reason to contact her anymore. No reason for hoping that one day they might cross each other's path again. And he was sure she had got him back his mansion as pledged. Therefore Asad was reluctant to open the envelope.
Then, Zoya would merely remain the daughter of the man who had killed his ammi.
Now that Asad had received back the propery, it didn't make any difference to him. Or his dead mother. She was no longer among them because of a bas***d and that would always be the truth. Unfortunately, Asad was so attached to the very same bas***d's daughter that he couldn't help wondering if there was going to be any happy ending to this sordid affair after all.
Asad knew he had hurt Zoya that day after they had made love to each other and had wanted to apologize to her but the right moment had never come. Once Zoya had recovered, she had acted cold and calculating with him; just like the professional model should be.
With resolution, he flung the envelope in his upper drawer preparing to shut it when he caught sight of the article his private investigator had handed over to him before their trip to Florida. It seemed such a long time ago since they had last decided for the quest of her half-sister.
Frowning as something on a front page of a magazine caught his attention, he removed it from the drawer to get a closer look. The headline said "Zoya Farooqui succeeds yet again to be the center of attention at the Rohit Bal's party last night". He frowned deeper and double checked the date. It was the day when he had pursued Zoya.
How was that possible? He had stayed at the party till late and was damned sure that Zoya had never been at that party. How could her pictures be on that article then? Enthralled despite himself, he flipped through the pages the headline referred to and could see pictures of Zoya.
Zoya had definitely not been present for the Rohit Bal's party wearing such a skimpy dress. Asad was puzzled. There was only one explanation possible, the picture was sabotaged.
Angry, Asad picked up his phone to call his private investigator to give him a good piece of mind and ask him an explanation about the sham. Then Asad remembered Zoya acknowledging his accusation the other day when he had confronted her about her hot picture on the front page of a Showbiz magazine. Zoya must have been lying for the picture had been openly tagging her as the lover of the man who had held her in his arms. And he knew the truth about her being a virgin.
Asad had come across the magazine out of pure coincidence whilst buying something in a brand shop. Imagine his surprise when he saw such kind of pictures on a stall and he had bought the tabloid. Asad had read the article fuming with anger. He had phoned his PI Imran and asked him a background check on Zoya's model career. When the articles had reached Asad, each juicier than the other with scandals, his wrath had escalated blinding him to every fact. Now as he looked closer at the picture of his Zoya hugging another man, he could see her legs shorter. He remembered her legs perfectly well as they had wrapped around him that night.
Flipping through the other pictures, he was certain that the person in the scandalous pictures was not her. Sometimes, her eyes were not chocolaty brown as Zoya's and sometimes she looked thinner.
Asad was intrigued. After such a long time, he felt adrenaline kick in as he made up his mind to find out the truth. The truth about Zoya Farooqui's double life. The final truth once and for all.
**********************************
Asad was having Zoya followed. He could not believe his own duplicity but knew if he confronted Zoya, she would never tell him the truth at any cost. She was too proud to give any explanations. Especially to him. And besides desperate situations required desperate measures, right?
So that had left Asad with only one option. Have Zoya followed till he gets to know the truth. Of course, he had put up Imran for this task but had asked him to report back to him immediately if he found her going to places that were suspicious for someone of her profession.
So far so good, her activities for the day had seemed normal and Imran had reported to him all the places where she had been. Zainab Creations, meeting with clients, lunch with her designer friend Nikhat, back to Zainab Creations and then back to her apartment.
Three days later, Asad got excited as Imran got the information that there was a party coming up for the weekend and he was sure that he was going to discover what she did during that time. Asad was sure now that Zoya rarely attended the celebrity parties.
So come Saturday, Asad decided to stalk Zoya himself after her working hours. Which was after six in the afternoon even during weekends. Asad would never have guessed that Zoya was such a hard worker. He had assumed that Mr. Siddiqui had left enough wealth for her to survive for the rest of her life.
Imran had told Asad that the Textile Firm was registered under Zoya's name and he could understand that she had wanted to invest wisely. But why the hell would Zoya work as a part time model? She was full of mystery and Asad was getting more and more interested to solve the puzzle.
As Asad caught sight of her heading for her Car, his heart skipped a beat. Damn she looked lovely in a normal white full sleeves top and skinny jeans which made her look professional and sexy at the same time. How can someone be so sexy still so simple.. Asad just couldn't fathom it.
God he had missed her so much. Asad swallowed a lump through his throat and went to his car still unseen by her. If she was heading for her apartment, Asad would wait for one hour outside and then head back to his hotel if nothing came up.
As Asad had assumed, Zoya got back to her apartment and Asad was having suspicions that he had been wrong. His mind had been imagining things and he was berating himself at how foolish he was when he saw Zoya head for her car again.
Asad sat in the car, started the engine and followed Zoya again. Surprised, he saw Zoya stop at "Aftaab Madarsa" and was even more surprised when she got down and entered the building without even knocking or meeting anyone.
What would Zoya be doing in the Madarsa at this time? It was near six in the evening not really late but not the optimal hour to be visiting an Madarsa. Parking at a safe distance, Asad followed Zoya into the building and was greeted by a severe looking gatekeeper. Why and How come he was not allowed to go in?
"I am with Miss Siddiqui, I mean Miss. Farooqui," Asad improvised hoping that his lie would not be discovered.
At the name of Miss Farooqui, it was as if Asad had casted a spell on the guard. Immediately, he smiled broadly at him and stepped aside meekly to let Asad in. So that was it. Zoya was a regular visitor here and no wonder she had required no formalities before entering.
As Asad followed Zoya, everybody seemed to know her well and nobody paid any attention to him. There was a loud happy greeting when Zoya met the kids and she sat among them acting familiarly around then as if she had done that a hundred times before.
Amidst the children, she was looking angelic and Asad stared at her in open admiration. Never had he seen a more beautiful woman before and it wasn't only what projected in her outer appearance. Her beauty was far deeper than that from the inside as well. Who would have thought that someone of her history would be so generous and strong? Would be so pure and innocent?
So engrossed was Asad in admiring Zoya that he did not see the woman in front of him angrily placing her hand on either side of her hips and watching him with a foreboding look. When Asad heard a noise, he yelped at the sight in front of him out of sheer shock. A fat lady was staring at him right in the face and demanding him of what business he was here for. Damn his camouflage! Zoya had seen him and was looking at him in flagrant disbelief.
"It's okay Mrs. Rafiq I know him," Zoya told the sinister woman who relaxed instantly and treated him with a sweet smile.
Mrs. Rafiq - "Sorry Beta, there ain't many strangers allowed in here."
Asad smiled in return and walked up to Zoya.
"What are you doing here?" Zoya asked calmly having apparently recovered from her initial astonishment.
Asad shrugged and tactfully changed the topic. "Introduce me, please," he suggested gently nodding in the directions of the small kids.
The kids were more than happy to oblige before Zoya could even get a word out. Each one was reciting their names politely as if they were in a classroom and Asad was their teacher. Their enthusiasm was infectious and he sat down with them too and they climbed on him eager to show him their drawings.
"Look," a small boy looking around four said. "This is the picture of Zoya."
"Anwar!" scolded Zoya but Asad could hear the love and pride in her voice instead of anger. He found himself wishing that Zoya had the same feelings for him. Asad blamed himself for being such a loser. He was envious of a small kid now. How pathetic was that?
Asad pretended to look closely at the graffiti in front of him and tried to appear impressed. "Yes I can see the resemblance. Isn't she beautiful?"
"Asaaad," Zoya giggled and poked him playfully in the ribs. "Stop it! Don't fuel his imagination now."
"She is!" protested the small Anwar and dropped into Zoya's lap with a thud. "I am going to marry her when I'm elder."
Asad chuckled and found no real surprise at Anwar's remark. Asad was sure if he had been Anwar's age, he would have been head over heels in love with Zoya himself.
"I don't blame you beta," Asad told Anwar playfully and tickled him teasingly.
Asad was looking at Zoya all the time and she sobered at the mention of nikaah. Asad knew she was remembering the hell she had been through on her nikaah day and tried to lighten the atmosphere.
Asad was liking the spirited Zoya way better and wanted her back. Forever. She seemed happy here almost at peace; something Asad had never associated with her before.
"So when you grow elder..." Asad mimicked the expression of Anwar. "...wouldn't Zoya get too old for you?"
"Asad Ahmed Khan, really!" Zoya scolded him and covered Anwar's mouth with her hand. "Don't answer that now, he's not really meaning it."
"Oh but Zoya. Are you going to grow old?" Anwar asked her looking on the verge of tears and giving Zoya his trademark soppy look.
Zoya burst out laughing at the innocent remark and Asad couldn't help grinning back too, their eyes locking over the small boy's head. The effect was electric as it had always been. They both instantly sobered as the look grew more intense.
Damn! Asad was in serious trouble now. What would he tell Zoya when she will ask him about the reason for which he was here? Asad was groping for an excuse in his mind when he remembered the still unopened envelope in the pocket of his coat.
It was the perfect excuse; he would tell Zoya that he had looked out for her to thank her in person for having given him back the property. But he should open it first to confirm that it was really the case else Zoya would seriously doubt his mental stability.
Under the pretext of going to the toilets, he excused himself and found one along the corridor. Once there making sure no one was in view, he ripped open the envelope and found two documents. One stipulating that he was now the owner of the Sheikh Villa and he was about to scan read the other one when somebody entered the toilet. Quickly, Asad dumped the papers back into his pocket and pretended to arrange his coat.
It was an elderly man who greeted Asad with so much warmth that he nearly flinched. No wonder Asad was in the man's good books because he was here with their adored Miss Farooqui. Asad could not help wondering the way the man would react if he knew that Asad was the one who had hurt Zoya and left her on the day of their Nikaah.
Asad made a quick exit before the man started a conversation with him and found Zoya still playing with the kids with no care in the world. On the verge of joining her, someone outran him. It was Mrs. Rafiq.
"Zoya," Mrs. Rafiq called and Zoya looked up at her with a smile. "I am so happy that you will be attending the function next month. We were so sure that you would not be able to make it out of your busy schedule."
"You've got to be kidding me, Mrs. Rafiq. Of course I'm going to be present. I'm not going to miss the event for nothing in the world," she was saying passionately.
MR - "Oh, Zoya. Thank you so much."
Zoya - "Now, now Mrs Rafiq. Stop thanking me. I'm only doing my duty as I have so often told you."
Mrs. Rafiq sighed. "You look so much like your mother, beta. So beautiful and so generous. I am sure Zainab Farooqui would've been so proud of you had she be alive today."
Asad hid behind the wall as he absorbed the shock he had just received. She was Zainab farooqui's daughter? The Zainab Farooqui? Who did not know Zainab Farooqui? She had been a famous model but had died a traumatic death a few years later. Zainab had been heart broken and her pictures had been all over the news when Zainab's lover had left her pregnant and her father had disinherited her. Still a small boy when the model had died, Asad had read the evergreen stories of Zainab on the tabloids his ammi had once bought.
But everybody knew the story of Zainab Farooqui exclusively but nobody had really bothered about the child involved in the whole dramatic experience. Nobody had even bothered about the lover who some people had rumoured about being in fact the husband. The focus had been about the model all the time; Zainab had always been in the limelight throughout the whole story.
Asad tried hard but could not remember the reason of Zainab's death.
Pondering on that piece of news, Asad wondered how Imran had missed that particular detail about Zoya. And then another truth hit Asad hard in the stomach. If Zoya was the daughter of Zainab Farooqui, it also meant she was the granddaughter of the late Omar Farooqui, owner of the several billions. Mr Farooqui had been a very severe man and when his daughter Zainab had been in love with an unknown small time businessman, he had disowned his only daughter and thrown her out of his life like a piece of dirt but had later repented his acts when Zainab had died. And from what Asad had heard, Omar had leagued all his riches to his only granddaughter before his death some 2.5 years back. He had never bothered to find out about the identity if the granddaughter.
That was the reason Zoya changed her surname to Ms. Farooqui and she had been the goddamn rich heiress all this time. Ten times richer than Asad.
And still Zoya worked harder than anyone Asad knew. She had opened a business which was flourishing and was spending all her quality time with disfavoured children. She had embraced the profession of her mother; a profession where sex was a trivial practice but had still kept her virtue intact. Zoya had not let that fact turn her uninhibited or even remotely immoral. Zoya's morality standards were very high and she was very down to earth.
Zoya had been left standing on her Nikaah day by the only person she had thought had loved her deeply but had still learnt to live with the broken pieces of her heart.
Asad Ahmed Khan was completely humbled. Humbled to have known someone like Zoya, to have loved someone like Zoya, to have been loved by someone like her. Even it was in the past.
Defeated, Asad slumped his back against the wall glad that Zoya was not seeing him. There was no way he would be able to pave a way for himself in Zoya's heart again. Asad had hurt her too much already to even hope that Zoya might forgive him one day.
And for the first time, Asad felt desperate for having done something that could no longer be undone. For the first time, he felt the distress that Zoya must have felt when he had left her three years ago. With no hope of getting back the love of his life, with no hope of forgiveness from Zoya.
Unable to bear the anguish of his broken heart any longer, Asad moved out of the Madarsa as fast as he can and got inside his car. Asad was breathing heavily and had no idea he had been holding back his tears until he felt something wet on his cheeks as he squeezed his eyes shut and rested his head against the steering.
When Asad had calmed down, he made up his mind to meet Zoya another time. Still raw with emotions, there was no way he would be able to face her right now. Feeling strong enough to drive himself back to his hotel, Asad sat up and was about to leave when he remembered the unread paper he had put away quickly when he had been interrupted. Since it concerned Zoya, Asad could not wait to find out what it was all about.
With trembling hands, Asad removed the envelope and when he saw what the document contained his agony increased ten folds and he felt unable to control the sobs that racked through his whole body. His Zoya had sacrificed everything for him and all he had done was treat her horribly. Asad cried like he had not done for many many years feeling his misery grow.
