Chapter 33 A visitor
Asad kept looking at Zoya while she fumbled with the box of charades. He noticed she avoided looking at him. Asad was totally confused. "Was it something embarassing in the card. " he thought. "maybe that is why she was not looking at him." He decided to ignore it and continued with the game. Before he could say anything, he noticed Zoya was not really reading the card although she held it in her hand but her mind seemed elsewhere. She looked preoccupied with something. Asad clicked his fingers infront of her face but still no reply. He then touched her shoulder and she jumped up suddenly looking shocked.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Farooki. Did not mean to startle you, but you looked to be miles away. Are you ok?" asked Asad.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I am going to my room. Am feeling tired." said Zoya getting up slowly from the sofa. Asad took her hand and before she could protest, helped her walk to her room. As soon as she got inside, she shut the door. Asad looked shocked at having the door slammed in his face. What was wrong with Ms. Farooki? She was behaving weirdly.
Zoya walked to her bed and sat down. She looked down and thought about the card. What should she do? Should she show it to Mr. Khan? Or should she ignore it? She was so confused. She took it out of her pocket and read it again. If she showed it to Mr. Khan, she did not know how he would react. She knew she would lose this special bond they had started to share since they got to the farmhouse and she wanted to keep that but if she showed the card to Mr. Khan, she knew he would leave her. Should she be selfish and not show him?
She heard a knock on the door.
"Yes." she answered.
"It's me." said Asad.
"Well, ofcourse it's you. Who else would it be?" replied Zoya.
"Oh, ok, so seems you are feeling better then, since you are arguing." said Asad.
"Ofcourse I am better, what was wrong?" asked Zoya.
"Well, you kind of walked away to your room and then shut the door in my face, so was wondering." mumbled Asad.
"Huh, it's not like you have never shut the door in my face. I just needed to go to the washroom." lied Zoya.
"Oh...ok, but did not hear you flush the toilet." said Asad.
"Then you need your ears cleaned. I did flush." lied Zoya.
Asad decided to stop this questioning because there was no winning with Zoya. She will argue till she got her way.
"Umm, Ms. Farooki. Are we going to talk like this?" asked Asad.
"Like what?" asked Zoya.
"Like this...with this door between us." replied Asad.
"Huh, what's wrong with that?" asked Zoya.
"Ok, fine, then talk like this. Am in no mood to argue with you. Am going to make dinner." said Asad walking to the kitchen.
Zoya heaved a sigh of relief. She took out her laptop and googled Raul Siddiqui. She got nothing. She then googled Rashid Ahmed Khan and got more than a million responses, all related to the Chicago bombings and his arrest. She saw the man's face and tried to compare it with Asad's face. They did look alike. She was so engrossed in her search that she jumped up when she heard a loud knock on her door.
"it's me again. I made some soup. It's canned soup. So hopefully you like it." said Asad.
Zoya was impressed. Mr. Khan could cook. That was amazing. She replied, "Thank you."
Asad was holding the tray and waited a few mins but when Zoya did not open the door, he placed the tray on the floor and walked away feeling alone. He shook the feeling. It seemed too quiet without Zoya in the kitchen. He sat down at the table to eat and kept stirring his soup looking out the window. He noticed a shadow and all his senses were on alert. He looked at Zoya's door and prayed she did not open it anytime soon. He moved stealthily to his room and reached under the dresser. Thank god his contact had left it there. He peeled it off and took it out. He found the package of bullets and filled the revolver. He put it in his waistband and crept to the front door. He slowly opened it and walked out. He noticed a shadow behind the tree and crept stealthily towards it careful not to step on any twigs or leaves. He was almost there when he heard Zoya calling out for him. "Damn!" he thought. She had to come out now. He turned around and noticed the shadow gone. He walked around the house searching for any clues when something bumped into him. He quickly reached for his gun but before he could do that, he smelt a jasmine scent and realized it was Zoya. He could kill this girl!! Did she not realize what he could have done with the gun in his hand. He quickly put her behind him and whispered, "Be quiet...and stay here. I will be back. Don't move. I repeat, don't move and if you do, so help you god I will kill you myself. Do you hear me?"
Zoya nodded, afraid to answer. She had never seen this side of Asad and it freaked her a little.
She crouched down and stayed there. Asad smirked. "let's see how long she stayed there." he thought.
Asad walked to the back of the house and a few mins later realized that whoever was there was long gone. He walked back to where he had left Zoya and found an empty space instead. Nothing new there. That girl never listened but where the hell was she? He started panicking and running all over calling out for her not worried about being quiet anymore. After about half an hour he returned to the house dejected and almost in tears. He had lost her. He should not have left her alone. That's what the goons wanted and he led them straight to her. He smacked his fist on the cement outside the house, not caring about the pain and the blood that oozed out. How could he be so careless? He had no clue where to start looking for her.
