Tum Hi Ho
(part 1)
He felt his breath hitch as his heart sensed her approach. He dared not turn around, his mind had pre-cautioned him. How would he face her now? After making it clear with his words that he had no intentions of engaging her or expressing his love, how could he? How could he face her, now, when they were about to get engaged?
Yes, they were getting engaged. At his Ammi's behest but they both knew, that no matter how much pain and hurt dwelled in their hearts, that they too would not bear to oppose her decision.
The thought of Zoya becoming his did strange things to him. To his heart. The thought of Asad becoming hers was overwhelming, so much so she could not bear to look away from him as she descended the stairs.
Asad, though, his back facing her, knew when she was coming. He could almost smell her. He could almost feel her. He closed his eyes and imagined how she would look today. He smiled and inhaled sharply. He opened his eye when he could sense their proximity getting more and more intense.
Gently he turned around, realizing he could not bear to wait any longer to see his fiance. He stood there taken aback. He had known Zoya was beautiful. Eever since the first time he had seen her, he had been mesmerized by her beauty, her eyes especially. He had never thought anything or anyone could look prettier than she did then and there. But today she proved him wrong. She was looking extraordinarily exquisite. Maybe it was the fact that she was in wedding like clothes, not for someone else, but only for him. Maybe because now, there was not only mere attraction but something deeper and darer than that. Maybe because they both knew what they were about to do was something they desperately wanted despite their vocal disagreement. Maybe because they were going to be bonded to each other now. She was going to be his, He was going to be hers.
Zoya lowered her eyes shyly as she saw Jahanpana Six Packs lost in staring at her. But she could not for too long, as her eyes were seeking him, as much as his sought hers. She knew Asad was goodlooking and she had been attracted to his great physique. But seeing him, dressed so smartly, black and white suit which clinged to him and the touch of red near his pocket which matched the slight blush evident on his face, she couldn't resist admiring him. Besides his physical hotness, she had to admit he was incredibly handsome and cute. If she wasn't lost in drooling over him, she would have laughed loudly at his over fascinated face as he adored her.
Before they knew it, they were standing a few centimeters apart, still lost on a trance of each other.
Najma and Dilshad's giggles startled and they both looked at them embarrassed.
'And you two don't want to get married?' Dilshad grumbled.
'Ammi did you say anything?' Asad asked irritated that they disturbed his and Zoya's eye lock, and without taking his eyes off her.
'Nahi! I was just saying, it's time to exchange rings, beta' she smile and covered up for her earlier statement, as Najma stifled a laugh.
The seriousness of this sunk in as both love birds looked at each other with questioning and unsure expressions, hoping to find reassurance and love in each other's eyes.
(part 2)
Dilshad then gave Asad the ring. There it was. The ring which he had placed upon Zoya's finger in the airport. Funny how it couldn't come out after, and even when it did, it was only to be placed back onto her finger. He held It in his hand as if weighing out the good and the bad before putting it on her finger.
She looked at him quizzically as he examined the ring and flashbacked onto their past and everything they had went through. The whole fake engagement and how it had even started. How it was going to become real.
He looked up to meet her deep eye. Before he could drown in them, he realized she was getting nervous and fidgety because he was taking too long. He almost smirked. He was relieved to see her like this because it meant she wanted it just as much as he did. Without further ado, he gingerly reached out for her left hand. He couldn't believe what he was about to do. Asad Ahmed Khan was about to engage Zoya Faruqui. Last time it was real but at least he could have denied it. But now, there was no turning back. There was no lying. There was no pretending and no hiding.
She felt herself holding her breath as he lifted her hand and took it in his. She looked at him affectionately, losing herself in the moment. He placed then ring onto her finger, where it belonged. He knew he could not bear seeing this ring on any other girl's finger.
He held her hand and looked up. She was already looking at him, waiting to meet those large luminous dark eyes. Dilshad cut them short, when she approached them, the ring for Asad in her hand.
Zoya took her hand out of his, and picked up the ring. She flipped it over in her hand , inspecting it, intending to irritate Asad, the way he did by taking a long time to make her wear her ring. But Zoya was Zoya. She nearly dropped it, both Asad and her diving their hands forward to catch it.
Asad caught it. 'Miss Faruqui! If you don't want to put it on for me, I can do it myself' he said slightly amused, slightly agitated.
She resumed her usually snappy behavior and her mouth shaped an O
'Allah miyan what's wrong with you!' she snatched it back.
'And by the way, just now you won't be able to call me Miss Faruui' she said rowdily.
Everyone laughed at her childishness. Even Asad gave a small smile. She blushed after processing what she had said.
She took his hand and placed the ring, looking deep into his eyes.
He clasped her hand with his. They stood there, the moment taking them in, making them lost. Lost in each other. Lost in the idea of being each other's.
'I told you na, that this was right' Dilshad beamed.
This snapped the two out of it and remembered their time and place and circumstance.
'Woh ammi its not'' he trailed off, not knowing how to justify himself and Zoya.
'Acha, leave that. Bhaijaan, won't you have your first dance with Zoya? I mean bhabhi' she giggled maniacally.
Dilshad and Najma backed away, leaving anough space for AsYa to dance. Tanveer was still there, gritting her teeth.
'First dance? Why? We've already ..' He started btu stopped when he saw his mother and sister's jaws drop.
'woh.. actually'
'Actually Phupi''
'Ya allah! Help these two!' she shook her head and then laughed.
'arrey Tanveer, are you going to dance with them too? It's a couple dance. Come here with us!' Najma chirped.
Zoya smile victoriously as she saw Tanveer's jealous expressions.
THE TABLES ARE TURNED NOW!!!! She thought as her smile went wilddd. Asad saw her face light up and he knew. He smirked but before he could saw anything, music filled the air.
Najma choose the most romantic song for them. Tum Hi Ho.
Both faced each other and Asad hesitantly placed his hand forward, asking for a dance.
Zoya blushed and gave him her hand. He slowly placed his hand on her waist. She closed her eyes at his touch. She moved her hand up his arm, finally onto his shoulder. Asad didn't even want to think of what she had done was doing to him. He just looked into her eyes. They said so much. They began moving, in sync. They had reached the highest level of solace. Nothing mattered. All the doubts were cleared. Their eyes spoke the truth and this night, their hearts met.
He spun her carefully and pulled her back in. Her arms grabbed onto his collar as she twirled in with a jerk. His hands immediately held around her waist tightly. Neither moved. How could they? How could they abandon each other's eyes? Their eyes which were their only means of knowing the truth about what they felt for each other. He seemed hypnotized by her beauty, his eye full of love.
Zoya couldn't help but reflect on their last engagement. She felt a pang in her heart, thinking that for Asad this would be once again a drama. She tried to move out of his loving embrace but failed.
His strong arms gripped her. He had read her mind. He knew what caused her sudden change of behavior.
'Why are you holding me back?I know very well it's a drama. Trust me they already bought it. Now let me go' she whispered in a sad but firm voice.
She was successful in getting out of his arms and turned to leave.
'Ye koi natak nahi hai. Yeh asli hai'
Zoya felt as though she was dreaming. What had just happened. She turned around to face him, her eyes wide in astonishment.
'Kya?'
'This is real.' She didn't know exactly why these words made her feel the way she did, or maybe she did know. Whatever it was it was enough for her to hold his hand as he once again moved their bodies across the floor. Dancing slowing, she looked up at him, with wonder.
'Kyun?' she asked innocently. She was hoping this time she would get it out of him.
He caught her off guard when he spun her suddenly, and took her back in jut in time for the chorus of the song. 'is liye' he said as he pointed up, motioning towards the sound of the music.
Kyonki tum hi ho
Ab tum hi ho
Zindagi, ab tum hi ho
Chain bhi, meraa dard bhi
Meri aashiqui ab tum hi ho
As the last line played, his hand automatically reached up to her cheek.'tum' tum hi ho' She leaned into his touch and closed her eyes. If this moment would only cease. She could spend the rest of her life stuck in this moment. Asad palm caressing her cheek, the other wrapped around her waist and pulling her closer and closer until there was no room left between them.
Her hands found their way up and around his neck. They moved gingerly but then realized the song was over. Oh well.
Zoya saw Asad lean down toward her.Her heart did a somersault. But then she remembered where they were.
'Allah miyan what's wrong with you Mr Khan? I mean your Ammi and Najma are right there! Have some shame!' she reprimanded quietly, thinking he was about to kiss her. He realized this and smirked.
'Kyun?' he said, moving a lock of hair from her eyes. Zoya was so lost in her fianc she did not even pay attention to the lock of hair annoyingly blowing against her temple.
'oh..' she said embarrassed.
Now she was coyly blushing like a bride.
Asad saw this and smiled.
'Mujhe pura hak hai' he said huskily and kissed her forehead.
At that point, Zoya couldn't control her face which was turning red, about to explode. All she could do was bury herself into Asad. She rested her head into the crook of his neck and he reciprocated the hug. All clapped and congratulated them on their engagement.
How the hell it happened? They didn't know. But one thing was clear. They wouldn't have it any other way.
Asad and Zoya.
They were now bonded to each other in a way they could never deny or break.
This was the start of their story.
