Part 6
Zoya, Dilshad and Asad were sitting in Dilshad's room discussing the happenings of the day and the progress of Zoya's search. Ayaan had gone back to his house to handle everything if any situation arises. Najma was in her room studying, Asad didn't want her to be involved with whatever was happening, he would rather she remained in the dark about everything. Asad's back ache had surprisingly reduced, now whether it was because of Zoya's effective massage or merely her presence and touch was something that confused him, he chose to believe it was because the former and decided to not dwell on it any further. Dilshad was concerned when she heard about the superstitious nonsense that was taking place in the other house but masked her emotions in front of Asad. However, Asad was Asad he could sense what her ammi was feeling and that irked him but he controlled his irritation and anger. He had absolutely no interest in what was going on in that house but now even Zoya lived there and he was getting increasingly worried about her safety, not that this black magic was going to harm her or anyone in anyway but he couldn't ignore that inner voice nagging him that something was not right in that house.
Dilshad wondered how Zoya would be adjusting in that house, Dilshad was very open and modern in her outlook, she never refused Zoya to do anything, neither did she ever ask her to follow a particular life style and as far she knows neither did her appi ever force her to do anything she didn't want to. Zoya had lived a fairly independent life, she was one of those girls who refused to be caged or dictated, she was one of those girls who was not born to be dominated and that was usually the reason behind Asad and Zoya's fights, he didn't like her way of living and she didn't like his way of thinking. Asad would yell at her for her clothing or her messy behavior but he would never force her to behave in a particular way except for a few exceptional moments. However, she wasn't sure how was she coping up in that house, she had to admit it the people in that house were very traditional in their thinking, everyone was expected a certain behaviour, everyone was expected to follow a decorum.
Dilshad worried how she would adjust, whether she was comfortable, whether she felt home sick. Dilshad stopped herself from thinking any further, why would she feel home sick? Zoya had taken such a special place not only in this house but also in everyone's heart and after staying with them for so long she had completely forgotten that Zoya's real home was in New York. Not only she but everyone had accepted Zoya as a member of their family and not a guest. Guest was a word she would use for Tanveer but not for Zoya, she was someone special. She thought of Zoya as her own daughter, she never differentiated between her and Najma and it was her motherly instincts that made her feel restless and worried about her.
"I still feel you should come back. That place is not safe and you are still as clueless about your abbu as you were when you came here." Asad tried one more time to persuade her to drop her plan.
"Mr Khan if you can't help me then please don't discourage me. I couldn't get the time to search about my abbu. First I fainted then today this black magic."
"That's the problem with you; you try to help everyone but yourself. And didn't I tell you to strictly stick to your business? If they want to believe in stupid superstition then let them, you don't need to get in between." Asad just couldn't get her obsession with saving the world. Dilshad shook her head at them. There were times when they fought like an old married couple and today was one of them. She didn't even miss the subtle yet very much existent worry in Asad's voice. She was shocked when Ayaan told him how exactly Asad got the back ache. She even refused to believe that her emotionally challenged son was capable of doing such sweet, caring gesture that too towards Zoya, whom she assumed to be his mortal enemy. Sometimes she felt that maybe, just maybe Asad and Zoya had some kind of feelings towards each other, an attraction, a strange pull but then times like this when they would fight as if they could murder each other if they got hold of any weapon made her change her mind. She rolled her eyes and calmed them down before they actually killed each other. Asad in order to get a grip on himself walked out of the room leaving Dilshad and Zoya behind. They talked about a lot of things and Zoya even helped Dilshad make the dinner. Asad had not left his room until it was time for dinner.
Zoya saw him make his way near the dining table and instinctively started arranging the table as per his OCD, carefully placing the fork, spoon, glass and serviette in it's rightful order not wanting to give him a chance to rebuke her. She cleaned all the minute spots or specks of dust that were visible to her eyes. Asad saw this and smiled. He took his place on his chair and stared at her as she began serving him. Zoya was aware of his gaze on her but she chose to ignore him, she was still angry with him for suggesting to quit her search for her abbu. Asad saw his ammi and Najma in the kitchen from the corner of his eyes, seeking the opportunity he wrapped his hand around Zoya's wrist stopping her from serving and made her sit on the chair next to his. Zoya was shocked and didn't understand his behavior, his moods would keep swinging.
"Are you sure you are safe there?" he asked her, the seriousness in his voice stopped Zoya from giving him a sassy answer. She closed her other hand over his and replied confidently with a smile,
"Yes Mr Khan."
"You don't feel any kind of threat?"
To this Zoya couldn't help roll her eyes.
"You do know that I'm staying at Ayaan's place and not with some mafia gang right?" she giggled.
"Zoya be serious please!" he said sternly.
"Allah miyan what's wrong with you Mr Khan. I'm perfectly fine ok! Plus Ayaan is there na." she said while shrugging her shoulders.
"Ayaan can't take care of himself so I honestly don't trust him with you." He said a bit loudly.
"Ouch bhaijaan that hurt." Ayaan had entered the dining area just then; he placed his hand on his heart and grimaced, pretending to be stabbed. Asad looked at his childish behavior then turned to Zoya.
"See what I was talking about." He raised his eyebrows and rested his elbow on the table with his hand beneath his chin. Zoya stuck her tongue out to him and tried to convince him that she was just as safe in that house as she was in his. Asad of course wasn't convinced but he let her stay after a lot of persuasion and on the condition that she would come back if she was even in the slightest of trouble. Zoya however didn't agree to this condition but she didn't dare refuse him. Ayaan saw Zoya's hand still on Asad's and he smiled a little seeing that. He knew something was up but he needed to be sure.
Dinner was not at all a quiet affair, with Zoya and Ayaan in the same room it's kind of difficult for silence to prevail for long. Asad constantly rolled his eyes and massaged his head but didn't say anything after all Zoya would go and there will be silence in the house once again. Once the dinner was over Ayaan and Zoya took their leave and that also involved a lot of emotional drama with Najma not wanting to let go Zoya, Dilshad asking her to take care almost the thousandth time and Asad silently praying for her safety.
